If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #775 (1897[-1841PT]) - Rachel - 'A candle. He MUST have lit it. He MUST have been here.'

From "Robservations 1/21/03 - #774-775 - The End For Rachel?"
Rachel, after opening the empty coffin and wondering where Tim is
The Robservations for Ep #775 doesn't reference the quote at all, nor does the AOL Update for it... However, as Rachel descends into the cellar, she calls out for Tim and then sees the coffin and wonders why it's down there, but she doesn't open it. She wonders where Tim is and then after seeing the lit candle she delivers the quote. Following that she decides to wait. And it isn't until that point that she goes back to the coffin and opens it...

But given all that, the Robservations for Ep #774, where the same scene as above is also staged as that ep's ending, does indeed reference the circumstances of the quote, though the quote itself, as we'll see below, is slightly different:

From "Robservations 1/21/03 - #774-775 - The End For Rachel?"
Dirk's hideaway - Rachel comes downstairs and finds the coffin.  Why is it down here? she wonders, and where is Tim?  She spots the burning candle--he must have lit it, she surmises, he must have been here--I'll have to wait for him to come back, but the coffin. . .she opens it and finds it empty.

But the reason I choose to use Ep #775, rather than Ep #774, is because, unlike Ep #775, Rachel's face is not on screen when she delivers the different parts of the quote in Ep #774:

Ep #774

Ep #775

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Dirk - 'I don't know. I don't know. But she... she MUST COME back to me. She MUST!') was back on January 31st of 2021, and the second (Edward - 'Then he MUST be found tonight. I don't want her to go through another night like this') was back on November 7th of 2024.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #509 (1968[-1840]) - Prof. Stokes - 'But you MUST. How I envy you that experience.'

From "Robservations 6/6/02 - #509/510 - Adam's New Friend/Taken to Trask"
Vicki comes to see Stokes at his home--the portrait disappeared last week, she reveals, and she was very upset about it. Stokes says he might be able to help, bluntly adding that he wants to talk to Vicki about Angelique Collins. Vicki looks uneasy, and Stokes says he realizes it's a personal matter for her. Why did you buy the portrait? asks Stokes. He asks her if she realized the identity of the woman in the portrait, but Vicki refuses to answer this question-she doubts he'd believe her, anyway, and she's trying to forget. I envy your trip to the past, he says, and believes it happened. This fascinates Vicki. If you tell me everything you know, he points out, it might save Barnabas' life. Vicki asks if Barnabas is in danger-is she trying to kill him? It's Cassandra, reveals Stokes. She looks so much like Angelique, muses Vicki--I tried to tell myself I was wrong and had misjudged her-if you're right, I'm frightened.
Stokes tells her Angelique was a witch. "And I was blamed for it," says Vicki.
The Robservations paraphrase (without using "MUST" - shameful!) but gets the main point of the quote across...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Tony - 'You know it MUST be old. Otherwise how would it have gotten under the floor?') was back on November 30th of 2023, and the second (Cassandra - 'You MUST. Look into my eyes and tell me that you will') was back on June 11th.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #9 (-1995/1970) - Trask - 'There is time enough to do what MUST be done.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE NINE:
COLLINSPORT - 1790 - JAIL:  Victoria cringes away from
Trask as he sadistically informs her there are "tests to be
made."  She orders him to keep away from her.  He corners her
and sneers, "Or you'll what?  Turn me into a lizard?  Turn the
blood in my veins into writhing maggots?"  Peter arrives, or-
dering Trask not to touch Victoria.  Trask laughs, "Well, if one
were to speak of a 'devil's advocate'...  Peter demands Trask
be removed. The Bailiff reluctantly apologizes to Trask, who
points out there's "time enough for what must be done." He
promises Victoria they'll be meeting again soon.  He informs
Peter that, by defending the Devil, he's bound to "reap the
Devil's reward".  He advises Pter to take care of his soul. ...

And the summary references the quote practically perfectly...

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release does -

- also like the VHS release, it has the correct aspect ratio, plus it even tends to show a bit more of the frame and it's clearer than the VHS.

And even though the MGM DVD release, like the TGG Direct release, tends to be clearer than the VHS, frustratingly, the aspect ratio is cropped from 4X3 to 16X9 (however, it seems as if for some reason all the copies of that version have been removed from Dailymotion ([hdscrt]), so I couldn't get a screen capture from there - I will have to get my DVD's before I can do that) -

And just a reminder, we've seen notations like "DS 1991 Ep #8 (-1995/1970)" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from the 1995-Gerard and Daphne-Summer of '70 storyline but that one doesn't have any more eps that haven't been quoted from.

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Barnabas - 'MUST I bar my door to keep you away?'') was back on June 21st of 2024, and the second (Maggie - ' Sara, you MUST come and help us now. Bring Victoria back to her empty chair. Bring her back!'), was back on October 23rd of 2025.

(And there will be many more eps coming up without "must" lines...)

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #780 (1897[-1970PT]) - Carl - 'Where's Judith? I MUST see her.'

From "Robservations 1/24/03 - #780-781 - Senseless Death; Barnabas in Dutch"
Cark stands outside the front door of Collinwood, knowing he must finish it now, whether Quentin is there or not!  He enters the house.  Carl is glad to see Trask.  Is Quentin here? asks Carl, his voice shaking.  He's gone, says Trask.  I want to see Judith, says Carl.  She's in town, says Trask, due back soon.  Carl doesn't know what to do; it will be dark soon
The Robservations paraphrases (once again without using "MUST" - shameful!) but does get the main point across...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Carl - 'It MUST be getting dark') was back on December 5th of 2022, and the second (Gregory - 'MUST we listen to that?') was back on January 17th of 2025.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #950 (1970) - Carolyn - 'You MUST call in a psychiatrist or something.'

From "Robservations 5/22/03 - #950-951"
On the foyer phone, Carolyn speaks to the police--can't they get Philip to explain it?--call in a psychiatrist, she says.
The Robservations references the circumstances of the quote (though once again without using "MUST" - shameful!)...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #835 (1897/1969) - Prof. Stokes - 'I'm afraid there isn't any hope any longer. He's gone. We MUST accept that fact and tell the family.'

From "Robservations 3/3/03 - Edward's Prisoner - #834/835"
Old House basement, 1969 - I know how difficult this must be for you, says Stokes, but your sitting here is pointless.  I can't help hoping, she says.  There is no more hope, he says sadly, he's gone--we must accept that fact and tell the family.  What will become of David? she asks.  I don't have the answer, admits Stokes.  The I-Ching wands are still arranged neatly on the table.
The Robservations paraphrases a bit of the quote but still gets all the points across...

And Prof. Stokes does indeed deliver the other example of "MUST" so it may show up in a future installment of the slideshow.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #1202 (1841PT[-1968/69]) - Catherine - 'It's as simple as that and you, you MUST accept it.'

From "#1201/1202: Robservations 12/10/03: Impassioned Lovers"
Catherine lies on the brass bed, watching her own hand wandering lazily, happily, between the bars...  She is sated, a woman who has just been made love to and enjoyed every second of it.  Bramwell sits on the trunk at the foot of the bed, putting on his clothes.  Are you angry with me? he asks, subdued.  (for what?--the lovemaking or kidnappingr?)  She reaches out and slips her hand into his.  I have no reason to be angry with you, she says languidly--you wanted to prove something to me, and you have proven it--but it doesn't make any difference
--she rises from the bed--how can I make you understand?--I've revealed my feelings for you, but you must also accept the fact that I also love Morgan.  He rises--that isn't possible, he insists, and you know it.  It is possible, I do love him, she says--and I still plan to marry Morgan for all the reasons I outlined to you before--I know the kind of life I want, and know I can never find it with you--yet I will find it with him--it's as simple as that and you must accept it!  Bramwell, devastated, confused, just looks at her.
The Robservations paraphrases just a bit of the quote but still references it quite well...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Quentin - 'Her carriage is still by the front gate. Then that MUST mean she's still on the estate') was back on July 28th of 2023, and the second (Catherine - 'How can I make you understand? I've revealed my feelings for you, but you MUST also accept the fact that I also love Morgan) was back on February 6th.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #579 (1968) - Jeff - 'Well then, you MUST have done something to prevent it.'

From "Robservations 7/26/02 - #578/579 - Adam Flies the Coop"
He asks Julia about Barnabas providing the life force--who will bring this creature alive? Julia doesn't know. Jeff asks what will happen to whoever is used? Nothing, says Julia, but Jeff read in Lang's journals that Barnabas was supposed to die--what did she do to prevent it? Julia asks about all his questions, telling him not to be so curious--the less he knows, the better.
The Robservations paraphrases the quote but gets the point across...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #435 (1796) - Barnabas - 'Something MUST be done to help Miss Winters.'

From "#0435/0436: Robservations 04/10/02:"
Trask has turned Abigail's death against Vicki, and, as Ben rightly points out, Barnabas is responsible for that. Since he can't go himself, Barnabas orders Ben to go to the courtroom and be a witness for Vicki--tell them about Angelique being the witch! Ben is terrified that Angelique won't let him--look how many times she made him mute before, to protect herself! And besides, Joshua might send him back to prison for testifying for Miss Winters, and Trask will be quick to point out that Ben is a convict.
Barnabas doesn't want to hear any arguments or objections; he's sure that once Ben is on the stand, he'll convince everyone. "Tomorrow morning, Ben!" orders Barnabas harshly
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all, nor does the AOL Update. However, after Barnabas wonders what evidence Trask is using against Miss Winters, Ben explains how Trask twisted things to make Miss Winters guilty and how Nathan testified against her. And it's after all that that Barn delivers the quote...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #326 (1967) - Liz - 'Vicki, I'm not saying there's any justification for it, but there MUST be some reason in David's mind.'

From "#0325/0326: Robservations 01/23/02: David's Terrible Nightmare"
Julia troops downstairs and eavesdrops in the foyer, listening to Vicki tells Liz the details of David's nightmare. Julia joins them and offers to talk to David herself. Liz is OK with it, but wants to check to make sure David is, too. Julia asks Vicki to tell her David's dream in detail.
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all, nor does the AOL Update. However, after Liz questions if David refuses to believe his dream was just a dream, Vicki says he believes everything is real. Liz can't understand his fear of Barnabas. Neither can Vicki. But Liz thinks there must be some reason for it. Vicki protests that there couldn't be because Barnabas has always been so fond of David. And after that is when Liz delivers the quote...

And Liz does indeed use "MUST" in the context I've indicated so that could be a quote in some future installment of the slideshow.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #972 (1970PT[-1966/67]) - Prof. Stokes - 'Barnabas, you MUST take me to that room immediately. I want to see this for myself.'

From "Robservations 6/9/03 - #972-973 - On the Run From a Shadow "
7 PM - Barnabas has related to Eliot everything he's witnessed in the east wing, with Liz, Julia and Willie leading completely different lives. If there were only a way to reach them, says Stokes. There is, says Barnabas, taking the book out of an envelope--there has to be, for this has reached me. Eliot examines the book, shocked--what does this mean? he asks.  It's a history of my ancestor, says Barnabas, and in that time band, he married Josette, had children, and died in 1830--of course in our own time band, he left Collinwood in 1799? and never returned.  I want to go check out this incredible room for myself, says Stokes.
The Robservations paraphrases but get the quote's point across...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Barnabas - 'Something exists and I MUST understand it. And I will understand it, no matter what happens') was back on June 9th of 2024.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #7 (-1966) - Jeremiah - 'Well, this MUST be the pretty young lady that's causing such a stir.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE SEVEN:
OLD HOUSE:  Joshua is quite impressed by the letter of
recommendation.  Abigail still wants to know what happened
to Phyllis Wick.  Victoria explains she doesn't know; she only
knew Phyllis couldn't come, so "I took the liberty of travelling
here to see if I could sere in her place."  Joshua thinks the
handwriting looks familiar.  Barnabas suggests he may have
seen it on a bill of sale.  Jeremiah enters and Barnabas intro-
duces him as irrepressable younger brother, Jeremiah."
He kisses Victoria's hand and gazes into her eyes.  Joshua
warns Jeremiah, "That will be enough. Business is being con-
ducted here!"  Jeremiah asks forgiveness for
his "exuberance."  ...

And the summary doesn't reference the quote, but Jeremiah delivers it as he enters the room and before Barnabas introduces him...

And yes, irrepressible is misspelled in the summary.

Also, it's interesting that the summary chose to use "travelling" rather than the standard in American English, "traveling." "Travelling" is the standard in British, Canadian, and Australian English.

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release (which I don't have any access to at the moment) does -

And just a reminder, we've seen notations like "DS 1991 Ep #7 (-1966)" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from the Vicki's Arrival-Burke's Revenge-Matthew Morgan-Introducing Josette storyline but that one doesn't have any more eps that haven't been quoted from.

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Peter - 'Then you MUST NOT go back to the manor. For if they think you are mad, they will ship you off to the madhouse and that is a fate worth weeping over') was back on October 1st of 2024, and the second (Barnabas - 'Miss Winters, I MUST warn you. My aunt might appear eccentric, but she can be very dangerous'), was back on December 11th of 2025.

(And there will be many more eps coming up without "must" lines...)

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Today's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #11 (-1966) - Peter - 'Victoria, don't you talk like that. You MUSTN'T even think it.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE ELEVEN:
JAIL:  Peter reports to Victoria that he hasn't been able to
find Angelique since she left the courtroom.  It's as if she's
vanished.  Victoria doesn't understand - both Ben and the
Countess said she was dead.  Discouraged, Victoria is certain
they're going to convict her.  He tries to encourage her. She
asks when the verdict will be in.  He replies, in the morning.
"Why would she do this to me?  Why does she hate me so
much?"  "Victoria, everything that Angelique has done seems
to stem from her feelings for Barnabas.  She saw Josette as a
rival... Perhaps she sees you as one too."  She shouts, "But
Peter, Barnabas is dead!"

And the summary doesn't reference the quote directly but does its circumstances...

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release (which I don't have any access to at the moment) does -

The first (Trask - 'Your Honor, MUST we suffer this catalogue of slanders against a woman who cannot defend herself?') was back on October 24th of 2024, and the second (Natalie - 'Well, if we are to protect Josette, we MUST do it in the next two nights'), was back on December 13th of 2025.

(And there will be many more eps coming up without "must" lines...)

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #1059 (1970PT[1966/67]) - Julia - 'I MUST stay awake. There may still be a chance. Oh, I MUST NOT fall asleep.'

From "#1058/1059: Robservations 08/11/03: Stokes on the Warpath"
Julia lies on the filthy cot in her basement prison. I must stay awake, she tells herself, there might still be a chance-I must not fall asleep! She sits up on the cot.
The Robservations gets the quote almost perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Barnabas - 'You simply MUST take my word and listen to what I have to say') was back on April 4th of 2024.
