If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #583 (1968) - Willie - 'Barnabas, look. There MUST be another girl you can use.'

From "Robservations 7/30/02 - #582/583 - Willie Takes Matters Into His Own Hands"
Barnabas demands an explanation. Adam will kill Vicki and everyone else, Barnabas reminds Willie, who cannot bring himself to speak at first, then mentions using Maggie as the life force. Willie first suggests using Julia, but Barn says she must run the experiment. Calculatingly, Willie suggests, "Use Vicki." Barnabas guiltily walks away from him, and Willie wants to know why Maggie? Willie reminds him about helping Maggie become Josette, to which Barn retorts, "Before you fancied yourself in love with her." (low blow, Barn, others can be in love besides you) Willie reminds him that Adam killed Maggie's father--he can't ask her to risk her life for him!
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all. However, after Barnabas refuses to use Vicki for the life force, he walks away from Willie, Willie follows him, and then Willie delivers the quote...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #445 (1796) - Joshua - 'I can and I will if I MUST.'

From "#0445/0446: Robservations 04/17/02: An Anguished Father"
Naomi is horrified when Millicent comes home and announces that she is going to marry Nathan Forbes. Joshua overhears her say this, and grows downright apoplectic when Millicent says she's of age and no one can stop her. He saved my life, risked his own, says Millicent, but Joshua finds Forbes' sudden appearance "convenient." Grateful is fine, snorts Joshua, but to suddenly want to marry him? She believes him, maintains Millicent, he was planning to divorce Suki. Joshua calls her gullible, over Naomi's protests that he's being cruel, and says Forbes is only after her money, but Millicent says he loves her for herself.
Joshua forbids the marriage, but Millicent says tough, he can't do a thing about it. He pulls out the big guns, then--he'll have her declared insane, send her away for a "rest." After all, she did try to kill the man she now wants to marry! She was angry, she insists.
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all. And the AOL Update from when Ep #445 was shown on the Sci-Fi Channel as the second ep on February 15, 1996 also doesn't reference the quote, but it does supply other details:

Quote from: Shebastorm
thunders Joshua from the doorway of the drawing room.  Did he hear her correctly? he demands.  Surely she's joking!  Millicent explains that Nathan saved her life yesterday, which Joshua declares to be nonsense - Forbes is too selfish to ever risk his life, and his arrival on the forbidden property was unbelievably convenient.   He blatantly declares to Millicent that a man like Forbes would never look twice at her if she didn't have so much money.  He forbids her to marry Forbes.  She reminds him that she's of age and he can't stop her from marrying whomever she chooses, then flounces away with her curls bouncing.  He stops her dead in her tracks by threatening to have her declared insane. He insists that she doesn't understand the world or anything around her, and her behavior today proves it.

However, after Millicent tries to explain that the only reason she tried to kill Nathan was that she was angry, then Joshua points that he now convinced that Millicent doesn't understand the world or anything around her,  and so Millicent protests that Joshua cannot do what he's threatening to do to her. But that's when Joshua delivers the quote...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #327 (1967) - Burke - 'Now, David, you MUSTN'T confuse a dream with reality.'

From "#0327/0328: Robservations 01/24/02: Barnabas Frames Willie"
Burke overhears the children talking,
but David doesn't get a chance to question Sarah about his dream when Burke's appearance chases her away. David is angry and disappointed, but says no when Burke wants to try finding her. David believes Sarah will only talk to him now. Burke recounts David's dream about Barnabas and wonders why the boy thinks Sarah can help, since she didn't have the same dream. Because she's a ghost, says David matter-of-factly, and Burke expresses incredulity. Look at how fast she disappeared, David points out.
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all. But the way the quote comes up is that Burke delivers it before he asks how Sarah would know about David's dream because it was David's dream and not hers, but David points out that Burke doesn't know very much about Sarah and eventually says she's a ghost...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #1004 (1970PT[-1966/67]) - Angelexis - 'I'm in this now. I MUST stay.'

From "#1004/1005: Robservations 07/01/03:"
Appear to me, commands Quentin, turning on a lamp--what do you want from me?  The laughter continues, louder and louder.  Quentin asks again, Dameon, what do you want from us. "SHE knows!" says Dameon. No, I don't, says Angelique, I swear I don't--why are you here, why do you say that?--he has me confused with Angelique, that's it, I know he does.  The way you're saying it, points out Quentin, you're implying he has a reason for hating Angelique. I know nothing about the two of them, she says.  Of course you don't, agrees Quentin--Dameon is gone, he's disappeared-- now what will we do?--there must be a power to get rid of him. Yes, agrees Angelique, there has to be. We've got to find someone, says Quentin--when I think how I ridiculed Angelique for believing in the occult. She would know what to do now, she says, but that doesn't help us, does it? If you want to go, he says, I'll understand it. And leave you here?--oh, no, Quentin, she assures him, touching his chest--I'm in this now, I must.
Who knows why the Robservations drops the word "stay"? But other than that it gets the quote well...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Hannah - 'I will do this thing because I MUST!') was back on April 26th of 2020, and the second (Angelexis - 'You MUST come here. I need your help. You were right about Dameon Edwards') was back on November 9th of 2023.

And just a reminder, we've seen a notation similar to "(1970PT[-1966/67])" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from a Vicki's Arrival-Burke's Revenge-Matthew Morgan-Introducing Josette ep but there are no longer any eps from that storyline that haven't been quoted from so an 1970PT quote was substituted.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #4 (-1966) - Victoria - 'But who painted them? Surely you MUST know who painted them.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE FOUR:
      STUDIO:  It is filled with
stacks of paint canvases leaning
against the wall, artist supplies,
and a covered painting on an
easel.  She looks through a stack
of paintings, then asks whose
room it is. David is uneasy and
suggests they leave.  She studies
the paintings, exclaiming over
their beauty.  She wants to
know who painted them.  He
doesn't answer.  She pulls a
cover off a painting and ex-
amines the image of a nude
woman holding a child, seen
from the back.  David, mes,
merized, stares at the painting.
"What are you doing in this
room?"  Roger's angry voice interrupts.  ...

And the summary references the quote but not directly...

And an interesting bit of trivia is that this scene was scripted and shot for the pilot but not used for it. Instead, it and scenes leading up to it come up in Ep #4.

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release (which I don't have any access to at the moment) does -

- also like the VHS release, it has the correct aspect ratio, plus it even tends to show a bit more of the frame and it's clearer than the VHS.

And even though the MGM DVD release, like the TGG Direct release, tends to be clearer than the VHS, frustratingly, the aspect ratio is cropped from 4X3 to 16X9 -

And just a reminder, we've seen notations like "DS 1991 Ep #4 (-1966)" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from the Vicki's Arrival-Burke's Revenge-Matthew Morgan-Introducing Josette storyline but that one doesn't have any more eps that haven't been quoted from.

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Sara's Writing - 'Oh, my brother, you MUST stop your plans for the young girl with the dark hair or else she and you are in terrible danger') was back on June 1st of 2025, and the second (Willie - 'Oh, jeez, Barnabas, you MUST have felt terrible'), was back on February 20th.

(And there will be many more eps coming up without "must" lines...)
Yesterday's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #8 (-1966) - Joshua - 'Huh? He's mad. He MUST be.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE EIGHT:
OLD HOUSE:  Joshua, Natalie, Naomi, Andre
and Millicent are gathered in the drawing room.
Joshua calls the notion of a duel "sheer, confounded
insanity - and frankly, sir, I hold your daughter
responsible!"  Andre, hotly, "Ah, so you blame the
victim for the crime!  This is an example of your
'Yankee justice'".  Natalie insists they stop assigning
blame - "This duel must be stopped!"  Joshua says it
won't be a duel - it will be an "execution".  Jeremiah
is no match for his brother; Barnabas must see reason.  Peter ar-
rives and reports Barnabas refuses to speak to anyone.  He only
discussed the arrangements.  Peter will be second for Jeremiah
and Ben Loomis will be his second.  Joshua says Barnabas is
"mad! I'll hear no more of this!".  He and Andre leaves.  Be-
wildered, Naomi protests, "They're good boys.  They love each
other.  They'd never harm each other."  Millicent whines, what
about her?  "Doesn't anyone care how I feel? He was supposed
to be my husband."  Peter, appalled by everything, "God have
mercy on us all."

And the summary references only a small part of the quote...

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release (which I don't have any access to at the moment) does -
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #289 (1967) - Julia - 'I guess it MUST have been the storm that upset her.'

From "#0289/0290: Robservations 12/18/01: Julia "Finds" Barnabas"
When Julia suggests to Vicki that Barnabas is trying to recreate Josette
through Vicki, however, the latter becomes upset and dismisses it as "an absurd notion", so upset that Vicki retires for bed after demanding to know what Julia is insinuating about Barnabas. When Carolyn returns with the coffee, she and Julia sit down for a cup. Julia asks Carolyn if Vicki has inclinations towards the supernatural, and while Carolyn says things do tend to happen in Vicki's presence, when Julia tries to ask about Barnabas, the lights abruptly go on and Julia never gets a chance to finish her question.
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all. But the way the quote comes up is that after Julia and Carolyn sit down to have coffee, Julia delivers the quote, which then prompts Carolyn to disagree and say she thinks Vicki was upset because the music box was playing when she woke up, and that kicks off the discussion of Vicki's inclinations towards the supernatural...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #574 (1968) - Nicholas - 'I'm afraid I MUST.'

From "Robservations 7/24/02 - #574/575 - Ang Formulates Her Own Agenda"
Nicholas stops by. She introduces Willie to Nicholas, and Willie nervously says he'd better be going--he'll come by tomorrow. She agrees. At the door, Willie says, "A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Blair," as though he doesn't mean it at all. Maggie tells Nicholas she has his painting ready. He asks if that wasn't Barnabas' servant, and she says yes. Nicholas met him once at Collinwood. Maggie wonders why Willie didn't remember him, and he suggests Willie is (touching his head) "an odd one." Maggie chuckles at this description, and says Willie has a tendency to be obscure--he just told her things were going wrong at the Old House. Oh, asks Nicholas, pretending indifference. He asks about the painting. He wants to get it back to his house before dark, and disappoints her by saying he can't stay for coffee. He has company coming at 8, and wants to have the painting on display by then. He grins, big, suggesting she might have a new market for Sam's paintings. She tells him she hopes to find a way to thank him, and he says he should be thanking her--for this, and for the pleasure of her friendship. Now that their business transaction is over with, he asks her to call him Nicholas. She agrees, and grins at him as he kisses her hand and promises to see her again soon. He leaves, hat, gloves and painting clutched in the same hand, and Maggie smiles as she closes the door behind him.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote but it comes up after Maggie is disappointed Nicholas has to leave right away because she was hoping he could stay for a cup of coffee. However, the AOL Update from when Ep #574 ran on the Sci-Fi Channel as the first ep on May 16, 1996 does indeed use "must" to indicate the circumstances of the quote:

Quote from: Robert Miller
Blair arrives at the cottage and Maggie introduces him to Willie. Willie says goodbye and leaves the cottage, Blair asks Maggie if he is Barnabas Collins servant and he tells her that he thinks Willie is an oddball.  Maggie says Willie is quite obscure, and she tells Blair that Willie said things were going wrong at the Old House. Blair asks about the painting and Maggie gives him the painting and invites him to stay for coffee but Blair tells her he must leave because he is having guests at home and wants to have it on display by 8:00.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #1236 (1841PT[-1968/69]) - Morgan - 'In the darkness it MUST have looked that way but they are way beyond moving again.'

From "#1236/1237: Robservations 01/12/04: Gabriel Attacks Again"
Records room - Julia and Morgan survey the bodies.  In the darkness, he says, it must have appeared that one of them moved--but they are way beyond moving again.  They're just as Brutus wants them to be, says Julia, adding, frightened--and what plans does he have for us?
The Robservations does just a bit of paraphrasing with the quote...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Gabriel - 'No one MUST know anything about this') was back on June 17th of 2022, and the second (Brutus' Ghost - 'You MUST prove yourself worthy of such a mission') was back on December 30th of 2023.

And just a reminder, we've seen a notation similar to "(1841PT[-1968/69])" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from a The Werewolf-Quentin's Ghost ep but there are no longer any eps from that storyline that haven't been quoted from so an 1841PT quote was substituted.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #829 (1897) - Edward - 'How much more of this madness MUST we endure?'

From "Robservations 2/26/03 - Angelique Steps In - #828-829"
"You're really going to marry that...that woman?" she asks.  Yes, says Q.  I won't let you do it! cries Charity.  You can't stop it, he retorts.  She takes a letter opener into her hands--it's me you love, she says, not her!  She lunges at him with the letter opener.  They begin to struggle, Quentin not putting down the brandy glass.  He fights her one-handed, ordering "For God's sake to put that down!"  Edward enters and breaks them up.  Charity begins to cry.  Edward, clutching the letter opener, asks her, "How much of this madness must we endure?"  She's been like this for a week, explains Quentin-- another example of Petofi's unique powers--perhaps it will convince you that something must be done about the Count.  Leave the room, demands Edward, I'll deal with Charity.
The Robservations leaves out a word but gets the quote well, even if it indicates that Edward is asking it of Charpansy when it's more likely he's simply making an observation...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #811 (1897[-1970PT]) - Edward(as his true self) - 'I want to get out, I MUST get out!'

From "Robservations 2/14/03 - #811-812 - Miss Harris Inflames Trask's Loins"
Trask goes to see Edward in the tower room and asks, do you know who you are?  Of course, Mr. Trask!--why shouldn't I know? asks Edward in the clipped tones of the "gentleman's gentleman."--you've been here twice before, and each time well spoken and decent, much nicer than the other gentleman--Quentin--who has visited me--I'm good at names, sometimes the Earl was amazed that I would know 200 people at the party, who they were married to and all pertinent information.  Edward fixes the bed as he speaks.  You're a treasure, says Trask.  I do know my job, says Edward, which is why I'm so heartsick at being locked in here--I don't understand it, I want to get out, must get out!  I would if I could, says Trask, but I can't--may I confide in you?  His Lordship always did, says Edward.  Just as there are people preventing you from taking your rightful place, says Trask, there are those doing the same to me.  How dreadful! remarks Edward.  I must deal with these people before I can become master of Collinwood, says Trask, and you can help me--here, sign this paper--it will help us get rid of our enemies.  Good, says Edward, and starts to read it.  Don't read it, insists Trask.
Again, the Robservations does just a bit of paraphrasing with the quote, leaving out a word, but it doesn't change anything...

And Gregory asks Edward if he knows who Gregory is, not what the summary indicates. That's why Edward answers "Mr. Trask."

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Edward(as his true self) - 'One MUST always do the right thing. It takes the right person to do the right thing. When the wrong person does the right thing, it's wrong') was back on October 31st (), and the second (Jenny's Ghost - 'I was mad, but I knew they were taking her away. I was mad, but I knew she MUST not stay at Collinwood') was back on January 23rd.

And just a reminder, we've seen a notation similar to "(1897[-1970PT])" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from a 1970PT ep but there are no longer any eps from that storyline that haven't been quoted from so an 1897 quote was substituted.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #836 (1897/1969) - Beth's Ghost - 'You MUST go away. He will not show himself to you.'

From "Robservations 3/4/03 - #836-837 - Quentin's Romantic Tangles Hit the Fan"
Candle in hand, Julia goes up to the tower, still begging Quentin, speak to me!  She hears a door opening, and goes in.  She asks, "Are you in this room?  Is it you I feel?"  The door closes, locking Julia in.  She starts going to the door, but stops when she hears a woman's voice telling her to wait.  We see a silhouette against the lightning outside.  The woman tells Julia, you must go away--he will not show himself to you.  Who are you? asks Julia.  Beth drifts out of the darkness and says, my name would mean nothing to you.  Julia holds up the candle--I know you, she says, you were a servant in this house.
The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And I do have to say that I love how the initial shot of Beth's Ghost, with her silhouette up against the lightning, is so effective -

- it didn't surprise me in the least that the director for Ep #836 was Lela Swift.
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #580 (1968) - Jeff - 'You MUST have talked to him and MUST have some idea.'

From "Robservations 7/29/02 - #580-581 - Jeff Attempts the Experiment"
Ang paces the living room, then goes to the mirror and performs the special trick. She asks to see the Old House cellar. When the image appears, Julia is pouring red liquid from one vial into another. She turns and asks Jeff what's wrong, noting he hasn't said much the past few days. He rubs his throat, telling her there has been little to say--I'm going to Collinwood and will see you later. Ang commands him to remain in the lab, she needs him there--stay with Dr. Hoffman. He tells Julia he's changed his mind, and she asks what's bothering him. He wants all this over with, he says, and she says she could perform the experiment tonight. The body will be finished by midnight, but she can't do it tonight because she needs the woman who will provide the life force. Who will Barnabas get? asks Jeff, but Julia doesn't know. She asks why he's so curious and he angrily retorts he wants to get this over with. Julia agrees--Barnabas will have to get someone quickly.
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all, but it comes up after Jeff asks who Barnabas will get for the life force...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Today's quote:
Ep #127 (1966) - Vicki - 'Well, then it MUST be Josette Collins. She MUST have been watching over your great Aunt too.'

From "#0127/0128: Robservations 08/17/01: Who is that Blonde?"
One more thing, says Vicki--have you ever seen a ghost? No, says Liz. Has anyone else in this house ever seen one--aside from David? asks Vicki. There was someone who claimed to, says Liz, but that was a long time ago--my great-aunt, when she was a little girl--she wandered away from the house one day and got lost on a deserted area of the beach--no one could find her--it was a nasty winter's day, she almost died from exposure--something like a miracle happened--a man in a fishing boat found her--it was a time of year when the boats don't go out, and that area of the beach that was never fished--according to the story, the man hardly knew himself why he was there--he just had an urge to take his boat out that day--a woman appeared to my great aunt just before she was rescued, and told her not to be afraid. A woman in a long white dress? asks Vicki excitedly. Yes, says Liz. Then it must be Josette Collins! exclaims Vicki, wonder on her face, she must have been watching over your great-aunt, too. That's what she thought, says Liz. So then I did see her, says Vicki, she does exist.

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly..."

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Mrs. Johnson - 'Burke Devlin MUST be very fond of you') was back on July 13th of 2020, and the second (Mrs. Johnson - 'Well, he didn't stop searching. He did everything he could. And then he hired special investigators. They came up here-- tramped all around the grounds. MUST have cost him a fortune') was back on May 23rd.
Today's quote:
Ep #173 (1967) - Laura - 'As a matter of fact, they might even say some very wicked things about your mother. You MUSTN'T believe anything they say about me, darling. Will you promise me that?'

From "#0172/0173: Robservations 09/20/01: Sarah Guards the Gate"
Mother, what's a seance like? Oh, just a lot of foolishness, she says. Then how come you went to one last night? he asks. You shouldn't even have been told about such things, she says--as a matter of fact, I didn't go--I just happened to be there. Tell me about it, he says. There's nothing to tell, she says, the only thing that came of it was that Vicki got very upset--she's a very nervous, high-strung girl--and then of course, you can't place too much faith in what people like that say, that includes Dr. Guthrie--as a matter of fact, they might say some wicked things about your mother
--you mustn't believe anything they say about me, darling, will you promise me that? He nods. Burke enters the cottage and tells David he'd better be getting home--it'll be dark soon.
