If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #841 (1897) - Beth - 'Yes, you MUST go back as quickly as you can.'

From "Robservations 3/6/03 - 840-841 - Petofi Sics Aristede on Julia"
Woods - Beth returns to tell Barnabas--Julia IS at the mill, she reveals, about to be killed--you must go there right away!--Petofi isn't there.   I'm very grateful to you, says Barnabas, and rushes off.
The Robservations paraphrases again, though, also again, it gets everything close to the original quote...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #584 (1968) - Maggie - 'You call dragging me out of my house, helping me? You MUST be crazy.'

From "Robservations 7/31/02 - #584/585 - Willie & Adam Take Drastic Action"
In the tomb, Maggie awakens, looks at the coffin, and screams, deafeningly. Willie assures her it's all right. She asks what's happened. It will be all right, don't get excited he cautions. She remembers him chloroforming her. I didn't have a choice, he says. She looks around--where are they, and why? She wants to get out of here! He grabs her arms and he tells her there is no way out--he knows the way, but won't tell her. Why? she asks. He replies that she's always been good to him, so he's repaying the favor. She finds dragging her from her house a crazy act, and he takes offense. Someday, she'll know he's right, but he can't explain, she'd never believe him. He tried last night to warn her she was in danger, why didn't she listen to him?
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly and paraphrases the circumstanstances without using "must" - shameful!!...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #328 (1967) - Sam - 'Why Maggie? Why would he want to harm her? He MUST be insane!'

From "#0327/0328: Robservations 01/24/02: Barnabas Frames Willie"
Barnabas tells Sam and George that he feels responsible for Willie's reprehensible actions and tells Sam to let him know if he or Maggie ever need anything.
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote (nor does the AOL Update), but it comes up while Barnabas is feigning his shock over Willie's "guilt"...

And poor Willie, he gets framed for Maggie's abduction and is called "insane" - and then, as seen in Saturday's quote, when he's saving Maggie from being used in the experiment by actually abducting her, he's deemed "crazy."

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Today's quote:
DS 2012: (-1966) - Barnabas - 'However, please know that it is with sincere regret that I MUST now kill all of you.'

From the DS 2012 script:
... the sound of NIGHT WOODS
growing louder by the second...

                                                 CUT TO:

EXT. ARCADIA NATIONAL FOREST — NIGHT

Hidden here in the woods, a circle of VW buses (including
the one Vicky arrived in) forms a modest HIPPIE CAMPSITE;
one of the last outposts of peace and love in a world
tilting toward Disco.

Within this circle, a collection of HIPPIES bob their
heads and impart wisdom around a fire, including our old
friends from the van:

                        BEARDED HIPPIE
You know what's good about this
          war, man? -

                        ALL HIPPIES
          Good?/No way, man!/Who's this guy?

                        BEARDED HIPPIE
Naw naw naw -- listen to me.
What"s good about this war is that
it's so bad that it's gonna be the
          last one!

The hippies nod and “right on" at this -- great point,
man. In the midst of these flower children, looking more
out of place than anyone ever has, is --

BARNABAS

wearing a tie-dye bandana and John Lennon sunglasses. He
fits in...not at all.

                        HIPPIE CHICK
                     (next to Barnabas)
Uh-huh. And this "last war" we're
          in the middle of...who wins?

Everyone can tell the question is a challenge. They look
to the Bearded Hippie, who nods - considering. Then:

                        BEARDED HIPPIE
          Peace wins, man.

The other Hippies CHEER and CLAP at this.

                        BEARDED HIPPIE (CONT’D)
          Peace wins every war...

Barnabas CLEARS HIS THROAT -- HARD. It silences the
campsite -- gruff, Gothic, and pained. This is the best
he can do at making conversation:

                        BARNABAS
You speak of "peace." Well I've
          very recently spent two centuries
locked in a box -- staring into
          the all-consuming void; the dark
shadows of one’s soul. I spent
the first century adrift on an
ocean of madness -- until at last
I washed ashore on a tranquil
island of the mind. But it was a
false peace, you see -- for I'd
          simply gone even more insane.

                        BEARDED HIPPIE
          Heavy.

                        BARNABAS
          Indeed. In that mad, dark
solitude -—- when one's eyes can no
longer look outward; one has no
choice but to turn them in. And
so I spent half of my confinement
looking at myself -—- coming to
terms with the scoundrel I'd been
in life. Giving penance for a
          multitude of misdeeds.

                        BARNABAS (CONT'D)
And at the end of this hundred
          years' self-examination, I arrived
          at a single, elegant truth:
                     (beat)
          All you need is...love.

The Hippies nearly lose their minds SHOUTING and CLAPPING
their approval. Barnabas is oblivious to the
Lennon/McCartney-ness of his sentiments.

                        HIPPIE CHICK
          Man...you tripped for a century.

                        BARNABAS
          And great purpose, methinks. For
I've fallen in love with a girl...

The circle OOHS and AAHS; throwing daisy chains at him.

                        BARNABAS (CONT’D)
Alas...I know not how to win her
tender affections, for I am a
          relic in her eyes.

                        BEARDED HIPPIE
That's what they say about us,
          man!

                        BARNABAS
Where I'm from, the love a woman
is won by giving land to their
          father.

Hippie Chick scowls at this. She's not the only one.

                        BARNABAS (CONT‘D)
Or sheep. And, if the love was
          earnest enough, perhaps even a
          combination of the two.

                        HIPPIE CHICK
Women don't care about sheep or
          land, man.

                        BARNABAS
          Are you certain?

                        HIPPIE CHICK
          Love, man. Tenderness. Chicks
          dig heart, man.

                        BARNABAS
                     (thinks, then)
          A heart...
                     (stands; grandly)

                        BARNABAS (CONT'D)
Then a heart she shall have! A
          living, beating heart!

The others CLAP and WHISTLE their approval. When at last
the cheers die down...

                        BARNABAS (CONT'D)
                     (everyone)
          You have my deepest gratitude,
really. Please know that it is
with sincere regret that I must
          now kill all of you...

The Hippies look at each other -- what did he say?

And in that moment of confusion, Barnabas‘s fangs
descend, his eyes go wide and we -—-

And the excerpt is from the November 30, 2010 version of the script, which is not the exact version that was ultimately shot. As such some of the directions, descriptions and dialogue are different in the excerpt. However, the way the quote is delivered in the film is very close to the way it appears in the excerpt...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #287 (1967) - Julia - 'Mr. Collins has done a remarkable job with this house. He MUST'VE made a very thorough study of the period to know so many details.'

From "#0287/0288: Robservations 12/17/01: Julia KNOWS!!!"
Julia appears at the Old House and tells Willie that she's going to wait until Barnabas "gets back". How did you manage to make the restoration of this house so accurate? Julia asks him. He first says there were no drawings to work from, then, realizing there would have had to be, contradicts himself and says there were. No need to lie, Julia assures him. She sits to await Barnabas while Willie nervously paces. Why do you work for Mr. Collins if he's so "difficult," as you say? she queries. Before Willie can answer this leading question
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote, however the AOL Update from when Ep #287 aired as the first show on the Sci-Fi Channel on October 19, 1995 has a bit more detail:

Quote from: GABLECLARK
Julia is at the Old House.  Willie is adament that Julia must leave now.  Julia will wait for Barnabas to return.  She questions Willie about the restoration of the house.  She comments that the restoration appears that Barnabas knew exactly what the house looked like originally.  Later, Julia is sitting in a chair and Willie is very nervous.

Before I posted about yesterday's quote, I meant to post that obviously the final version of the 2012 DS script dropped the Lennon/McCartney reference in favor of the Love Story reference they used. And interestingly enough, Love Story itself is nowhere to be found in the November 30th version of the script. That's apparently something that was worked in later...

[pointing-up]  I don't know what they did but I had to go all the way back to a backup I'd made on April 6th of last year to get the code that was missing. How it disappeared is anyone's guess. But weird things happen around here.

But anyway, if you're not seeing the slideshow like this -

2026:

Ep #827 (1897) - King Johnny - 'King Johnny Romano alone
is going to do what MUST be done!'

2025:

Ep #792 (1897) - Quentin - 'Suppose we come to some
arrangement. I keep the hand until it does what it MUST,
and then, then I'll give it to you, huh?'

2024:

Ep #714 (1897) - Quentin - 'Judith, I MUST congratulate
you. I haven't seen him get this worked up in a long time.'

2023:

Ep  #530 (1968) - Cassandra - 'There is something you
MUST do for me.'

2022:

Ep #310 (1967) - Barnabas - 'Yes, Willie, we MUST.'

2021:

Ep #365 (1967) - Carolyn - 'Do you want to stop it,
Barnabas? MUST you stop it?'

2020:

Ep #647 (1968) - Madame Findley - 'A war is being waged
and we MUST find the one who started it.'

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #567 (1968) - Jeff - 'They MUST have had some reason, some-- some reason to do this.'

From "Robservations 7/18/02 - #566/567 - Barnabas Learns the Truth"
Jeff watches through the window as Barnabas tamps out the candles in the drawing room. Jeff finds the doors to the Old House locked (AMAZING!) and tries the window, which, miraculously, is unlocked! (as usual!) He climbs in, sneaks downstairs and gazes at the laboratory equipment. Why do they have all of Lang's equipment and instruments down here? he wonders. He picks up a scalpel and stares at it. He finds Lang's private journals. He was right, Barnabas lied to him. They didn't dispose of the creature's body, they found a head and completed the experiment! They brought that THING to life, created Lang's monster--but why?? What was their interest in such a project? What could they gain? Jeff ponders all this, then comes across the woman's body on the table. "Oh, no!" he cries, holding his head in horror.
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote, however after Jeff wonders what they could gain, he then wonders why they moved all of Lang's equipment there, and then he delivers the quote just before and as he's discovering the body...

Also, Jeff doesn't remark that they found a head, what he actually says is, "They went ahead and completed the experiment for him."  [ghost_rolleyes]

2026:

Ep #121 (1966) - David - 'It MUST be that!'

2025:

Ep #92 (1966) - Richard - 'You MUSTN'T think that
Collinwood was always the way it is now. There was a time
when it took a large staff to run the place.'

2024:

Ep #75 (1966) - Roger - 'For goodness sake, Kitten,
it MUST be here in the house somewhere. It's bound to
turn up sooner or later.'

2023:

Ep #50 (1966) - Roger - 'Well, you MUST know that
Bill and I have had differences about a number of things
at the cannery.'

him all these years, hoping he'll come back, he MUST
have been quite a man.'

2020:

Ep #122 (1966) - Matthew - 'Voices callin' ta me--you

"Nine sacred candles, all burning."  We see nine candles lit before him.  "All ready!"  He pulls out the sword.  "Mateo, Zarco, all you of the Romano tribe who bore the honor and the glory and the power to stand up against our hated enemy, wherever you are, see this moment and make it your triumph, too.  King Johnny Romana, of all the men of his tribe, has found Petofi!--King Johnny Romana alone is going to do what must be done!"  He takes the scimitar and walks over to the terrified Petofi, whose arm rests on the chair's armrest.  Petofi's eyes widen to the size of robin's eggs as, overcome with terror, he watches King Johnny raise the scimitar high above his hand!

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #121 (1966) - David - 'It MUST be that!'

From "#0121/0122: Robservations 08/14/01: Matthew on the Brink"
I thought I heard something, says David--I thought it was you--when I came in, I didn't see you and I started to call your name, then I could hear it. Hear what? asks Matthew. The sound, says David--it was like a voice coming from that wall. Come on, Davy! chides Matthew. No, says David, it was like someone was trying to say something, I don't know what. It could have been in your mind, suggests Matthew. No, it was very real, insists David. Matthew drags David over to the shelf. Do you hear it now? he demands. No, I don't hear it now, says David. You see, says Matthew. But I know I heard something, says David. Forget it, Davy, I'm tellin' ya, says Matthew, lighting the cigarette. I can't forget it, David says. I don't like the way you're talkin' says Matthew. Do you have something to do with the secret of this house? You're askin' too many questions, grumbles Matthew, you've been here too long already. It must be that! says David. Go home now, orders Matthew. What is it? asks David. That's enough, says Matthew. That's the secret! proclaims David. Trouble with you is, you don't know when to stop, says Matthew. Please, you don't have to keep the secret from me! says David.
The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Matthew - 'If you wanta help me, ya MUST never do anything that might hurt me') was back on October 4th of 2021, and the second (Sheriff Patterson - 'Now, you MUSTN'T feel that way. No one could have predicted this') was back on August 24th of 2023.
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #172 (1967) - Burke - 'Well, it MUST be pretty devastating information for you to give it to me for nothing.'

From "#0172/0173: Robservations 09/20/01: Sarah Guards the Gate"
Sarah reports to Burke's hotel room. I didn't expect to see you today, he says. I have information I'd give you even if you weren't paying me, she says. Well, it must be pretty devastating information for you to give it to me for nothing, he says, hands in pockets. (LOL!) Do you know what went on at Collinwood last night? she asks. That's what I pay you for, he reminds her, to find out.
The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Laura - 'You MUSTN'T do that. Leave the fire alone, I want it left burning all the time') was back on August 11th.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding yesterday's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Yesterday's quote:
Ep #282 (1967) - Liz - 'Oh, you- you MUST mean Sarah Collins.'

From "#0281/0282: Robservations 12/12/01: Josette Speaks Through Vicki"
Drawing room - Liz enters to find Vicki, smiling, listening to the music box Barnabas gave her. Hearing of Barnabas' gift, Liz expresses her concern that Vicki's overdosing on Josette--they've had enough seances lately,
and Vicki is a sensitive and vulnerable girl without a past of her own--don't look for a past that isn't there, cautions Liz.
The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all, nor does the AOL Update. However, after Liz says they've had enough seances and she comments on how Vicki imagined seeing a child at the Old House, Vicki insists it was just her imagination. Then she goes on to explain that she knows why it happened because when she went through the trunk of old clothes at the Old House, she came across a dress that belonged to a little girl, the daughter of Joshua and Naomi. And to that Liz delivered the quote...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Julia - 'We MUST do everything and everything and anything we can to hurry the day that you can remember the story of the real Maggie Evans') was back on December 28th.
