There must be some mistake, babbles Philip. No, no mistake, says Davenport--it seems someone mentioned what we believe to be the Todd's shop in his dying words. Who was that? queries Philip.

This shocks Quentin--I don't understand, he says--what's going on? So many things are going on even I don't understand, says Barnabas, but you must let me take you to the farmhouse where he is--it's extremely important to both you and Maggie that you come with me. Quentin insists he must stay with Maggie.  The doctor will be here momentarily, Barnabas reminds him--we have no time to lose. Quentin reluctantly goes out the door with his cousin.

The Robservations does a bit of paraphrasing but gets all the main point across well...

And Quentin does not say he "must" stay because what he actually says is he's "got to" stay.

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Hoffman - 'You MUST get back as soon as possible. Now I have uncovered something concerning Barnabas. It may be what we want') was back on January 19th of 2022.

Why didn't you say anything? asks Vicki, incredulous. Who would have believed me? asks Roger--I had motive, as they say, and I had the opportunity. Vicki thinks it over. I don't know, she says. Even you don't believe me, says Roger. I didn't say that, insists Vicki--it's just so much to take in--are you sure he was dead? Quite sure, says Roger. Could you tell how long he'd been dead? she asks. As far as I could tell, says Roger, it must have happened just before I got there--he couldn't have been dead more than 10 minutes. Once again, the Robservations does a bit of paraphrasing but gets all the main point across well...

And when it comes to the "must" lines in the excerpt, all of them appear in the scene, so the others may well appear in the slideshow at some point. And interestingly enough, Roger says "5 minutes" not "10 minutes."

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Roger - 'I MUST talk to you, and I didn't want you to call out and bring that little counter girl back') was back on June 20th of 2023, and the second (Carolyn - 'And the funny thing about it was, she was right there in the house-- they MUST have just missed each other') was back on October 27th of 2023.

In the corridor, Riggs is at his post, stretching as though he'd been napping.  He hurriedly retains his post.  Joshua has him open the door, and they find Josette missing.  I didn't let her out! says Riggs, alarmed.

Joshua shows the secret panel to Natalie, which, he says, was added to the house because of "unsettled times" -built to safeguard the family.  Josette couldn't have known about that secret passageway, protests Natalie.  The only people who knew about it, says Joshua, Barnabas and Jeremiah-are dead.

For some unknown reason, the Robservations skips right over the quote. However, the AOL Update from back when the ep was shown on the Sci-Fi Channel as the second ep on 1/30/96 is better:

   Riggs awakens from his catnap and stretches, just in time before Natalie and Joshua come strolling down the hall.  Riggs unlocks the door, and they go in... but Josette is gone!  Riggs insists he didn't let her out, though she had pleaded with him.  He goes off to form a search party.  Joshua shows Natalie the secret panel, explaining that the plans for the house were drawn during the war, and he had this passageway put in as a safeguard.  Only two people besides him knew of this passageway, and they're both dead:  Jeremiah and Barnabas.  "Barnabas!", repeats Natalie.

And Ep #423 is this month's second example where Midnite serendipitously happened upon an ep that hadn't been quoted from before.

Barnabas sits in his usual chair, miserable. Julia stops by and says he looks exhausted. I've been up all night, explains Barnabas, who tells her that being rid of Cassandra hasn't ended their problems; they're just beginning. He tells her about Adam's threat--he has Vicki and will kill her if they don't create a mate for him. They have no choice, insists Barnabas, but Julia says they can't. She knows he's worried about Vicki, but another experiment is out of the question. You did it before, points out Barn, but Julia says she merely finished what Lang had started. Barn reminds her she has Lang's journals, but Julia says she wouldn't do the experiment if she could. Look at what Adam has done--the thought of a mate for him is frightening, says Julia, they'd be responsible for creating a race of monsters.

Then you are willing to let Vicki die? asks Barnabas. Julia wants them to learn who put Adam up to this. Who? Stokes or Nicholas, suggests Julia, but Barnabas doubts Stokes is responsible. Julia knows they took Adam in, protected him--but why? They should visit Stokes and check it out.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly but does its circumstances...

And this is the second quote from the ep. The first (Prof. Stokes - 'You call it a mistaken impression. But there MUST be some logical basis for it') was back on August 29th.

I begged you once before, and ask again, says Barnabas--don't concern yourself with things that are better left alone--please!  I must be concerned with the people I love, says Julia, who are being hurt by what's happening--Carolyn, for one, and yes, you Barnabas (only once more does she come this close to telling him how she feels about him.)  I know you're in some kind of trouble, I've known for a long time--"Let me be concerned, let me try to help you!" she implores. There's nothing you can do, he assures her. Perhaps, she says. Perhaps the situation is far worse than you imagined, he hints. Then you can do something about it, she says, if you want to, and I think you want to--"I'm going to take the chance in thinking that you do." He turns around to face her--what do you mean? he asks. This evening, says Julia, the sheriff and I searched the Todd's antique shop--I didn't think we'd found anything, but a little while ago, the sheriff called and said he'd found a burned cufflink that matched the one Paul was wearing when he died

The House by the Sea - 8 PM - Nicholas gazes out the window at the lovely, clear night, thinking it's a good night for making wise decisions. Barnabas will agree to another experiment, Vicki will go free, (he brushes away a fly), Adam will be happy, and I am the one who will gain the most. He stares at his reflection, adjusting his tie, admiring himself. Adam pays him a visit. Nicholas is surprised to see him; he took a big risk. Adam kept thinking about Vicki, who Nicholas assures him is safe. Adam wants to see her; he's taking her back to Collinwood. Nicholas assumes Barnabas has agreed to his demands, but Adam says he hasn't. They can't let Vicki go now, then, protests Nicholas. Adam says what they did was wrong--Vicki is innocent and doesn't deserve to be hurt.

Nicholas says someone has been giving him the "do unto others." message. It couldn't have been Barnabas with the morality lecture, figures Nicholas, so who told him holding Vicki hostage is wrong? Adam admits it was Stokes, who has never lied to him. Nicholas says Adam felt bad not because Stokes was right, but if he sets Vicki free, how can he get Barnabas to cooperate? Adam says he'll find another way, but Stokes reminds him Barnabas hates him, he won't do anything for him unless he applies the right pressure. He felt bad because Stokes wanted him to feel bad, to have a guilty conscience, insists Nicholas. Adam us confused about right and wrong now. Stokes knew he was holding Vicki captive because Barnabas told him, so he's helping Barnabas, not Adam. Was Stokes trying to trick me? asks Adam, finding it hard to believe, but Nicholas points out that as long as he holds Vicki, Barnabas must go through with another experiment; if he lets Vicki go, he will never get his mate and live in loneliness forever. Stokes tried to tell him it's wrong to hurt Vicki, and they have no intention of doing so as long as Barnabas does what he wants--Barnabas will have to give in to him, and make a mate for him rather than see Vicki die.

Old House - Aristede warns Magda--don't lead us to a place Barnabas is not.  She won't, Jamison assures him.  You're more trusting than I am, says Aristede--she's very clever.  Not so, insists Jamison--if she were, she wouldn't have gotten herself into such a situation.  You make me feel so bad, telling me everything is my fault, says Magda--IF Sandor hadn't gone to look for the jewels, if I hadn't sent him, Barnabas Collins would still be in his coffin.  That's true, says Jamison.  If you hadn't put on the curse, or stolen the hand, adds Aristede.  But we must thank her for that, says Jamison, for it has given us a chance to get the hand, and we will give her a chance to atone for all her sins and end this horror--you'll be very grateful to me, won't you, Magda?  "Jamison," says Magda sadly.  This angers the boy--don't call me that, he commands--I don't call you by your wrong name, do I?  Don't make me take you to Barnabas, please, begs Magda.  She won't do it, Aristede comments.  She knows she will, says Jamison--the will of Count Petofi is stronger than any man.  Magda agrees to go now.

The Robservations paraphrases the quote, covers the main point, but doesn't use any form of "must" - shameful! And when it comes to the "must" that the excerpt does use, it isn't used in the scene because Jamitofi actually says, "Oh, but we have to thank her for that."...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Jamitofi - 'Perhaps Barnabas Collins had, had a premonition of danger. He merely follows his instinct--as we MUST now do') was back on August 25th of 2020, and the second (Quentin - 'No, no, you don't. You MUSTN'T ever know') was back on October 9th of 2024.
