I hope that things have settled down and that you're okay.

Oh, I'm fine - I'm actually helping out someone else and have been spending practically 24/7 at their house. Thanks for your concern.  [easter_smiley]

I just realized that the first quote for April would have been from an 1841PT ep that hadn't been quoted from before. But since there aren't any unquoted 1841PT eps left, I said I would use a quote from an alternate version of DS in the cases where 1841PT was supposed to come up. Well, I brought a whole lot of DS stuff with me from my house but I didn't bring the hoDS, NoDS, or 1991 Series Blu-rays/DVDs.  [6184]  So, I can't get screen captures from them. Therefore, April 1st's screen capture for its sixth entry in the slideshow will have to wait until I can get the chance to get them. But I will pick out a quote and post that. And then I'll add the screen capture to the post later...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding April 1st's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
April 1st's quote:
hoDS: Scene #142 (-1841PT) - Barnabas - 'No, I MUST get back to the Old House. I have work to do.'

From DC's hoDS script:
142    JULIA - MEDIUM ANGLE                               142

as she turns away from camera to continue fixing her
face.  CAMERA MOVES IN over her shoulder and we see
her reflection in the small mirror.  As the other go
on talking her face suddenly goes white.  She sees
something that sends a chill through.  She angles
the mirror slightly in such a way that we can see the
group on the opposite side of the room.  We can see
Roger addressing Barnabas -- but there is no reflection
       of Barnabas.

                             BARNABAS (OS)
No, I must get back to the old house.
                 I have work to do.
                                                            |
                                                            |
Julia turns around and looks at the group.          V
                                                          Whip
                                                          Pan
                             ROGER (OS)
                 But it's dangerous going through
                 these woods alone!

142    CONTD                                        CONTD 142
                                             3
During this, CAMERA WHIP PANS TO the two men.  We see
       Barnabas standing there as before.
                                               REVERSE
JULIA - CAMERA ZOOMS IN TO CLOSE-UP     WIDE

She turns again and looks in the mirror.  Again there
is no reflection of Barnabas.  She closes the compact
       and stands there frozen.

GROUP SHOT - JULIA IN F.G.
                      Maggie    X  into  shot
                             BARNABAS
On the way here I encountered half
a dozen of the sheriff's deputies.
The estate is being well patrolled. protected
Nothing will happen to me. Good-
night. Julia turns to face them.

And the script has the quote perfectly. However, I cut off the excerpt where I did because before Barnabas delivers his last lines the actual scene inserts some unscripted dialogue from him before going back to what's scripted.

And as with other hoDS screen captures, I used one taken from the VHS -

- so that it would be in keeping with the dimensions of the screen captures from the original show, but this is what the Blu-ray looks like -

- and while looking to see if there is a copy of the VHS version online (there doesn't appear to be) I came across something quite surprising, at least to me. Apparently, there's was, or perhaps still is an alternate 4X3 print of hoDS that, unlike the VHS, shows more of the frame at the top but less on the sides and bottom, and it was shown as the July 14, 1985 installment of Elvira's Movie Macabre. Here's a screen capture from it:

Who knew?! And I wonder if somewhere online there's also an alternate 4X3 print of NoDS that may have been shown on TV somewhere? One of these days I'm definitely going to have to check...

It's amazing how much time you devote to this and I can't imagine how much is involved in compiling all of these things.  I hope things have worked out with the other issues.  We certainly appreciate all you do!!

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding April 2nd's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
April 2nd's quote:
Ep #1169 (1840) - Julia - 'Barnabas, this is madness. You MUST NOT believe her!'

From "#1169/1170: Robservations 11/17/03: A Curse is Lifted"
Collinwood drawing room - "Barnabas, this is madness!" cries Julia, "you must not believe her!--if you believe her then she will be manipulating you, and you will never know where you are--oh, Barnabas, if you believe her you'll be at her perpetual mercy,  you must not trust her!"   But I do, I must, says Barnabas, she's changed and I have changed because of her--I'm free now, and I MUST believe her!  Julia shakes her head--anything you feel beyond gratitude will be a serious mistake, she says--she will use her power against you again--"Oh, Barnabas, I care for you too much..."  She stops, inches from making the three-word declaration, and he looks at her, brow furrowed.  Forcing a neutral expression onto her face, tamping down on her passion, Julia says carefully, "You're my good friend, I don't want to lose you."  You will not lose me, he assures her, not now, I am not afraid of anything anymore, I'm ready for anything that might come along because I'm human now--what am I doing standing here when I can be outside in the sun?--"Julia, excuse me, I'd like to take a walk alone for a moment."  I understand, she says, and watches him walk outside into the light of day.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And the other "MUST" lines do indeed appear in the scene, so they will no doubt be showing up as future installments in the slideshow...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding April 3rd's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
April 3rd's quote:
Ep #1104 (1970) - Barnabas - ''Ep #1104 (1970) - Barnabas - 'Gerard, he MUST'VE brought it as a way to lure the children here.'

From "#1103/1104: Robservations 09/12/03: Beginning of the End"
Barnabas enters the only room we've seen in Rose Cottage.  He finds the carousel there, turning and playing.  It wasn't in this room when I was here before, says Barn, why is it here now?--Gerard--he must have brought it as a way to lead the children here.  He calls to the kids again- answer if you are here! he begs.  The music stops, as does the carousel.  The door closes.  Gerard, I know you're here in this room! says Barnabas.  He turns--Gerard IS there.

Strangely, the Robservations changes a word in the quote but otherwise references it quite well...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding April 4th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
April 4th's quote:
Ep #1046 (1970PT) - Timothy Stokes - 'Meanwhile, I MUST invoke those powers of darkness that guided me so in this experiment.'

From "#1046/1047: Robservations 08/01/03: Carolyn Mourns; Claude North"
Stokes explains to Angelique, who lies in her bed at Collinwood, the moment Roxanne speaks, I'm afraid it will be the end for you. The end? asks Ang--what are you talking about?
If she regains her powers of speech, he explains, she'll be in complete control of her faculties--it would mean the life force has left her body and returned to that of the other woman. Then I will die, says Ang, distressed. Yes, he says.  What will you do about it? she demands.  I combined black magic with medical science to do this, he reminds her--the medication I gave you a few moments ago should be of some help, but meanwhile, he says, lighting black candles, I will call upon the powers of darkness that have led me so successfully in this experiment. Over the candles, Stokes intones, "You that exist in a world beyond the scope of mortal view, beyond the realms of time and space, hear me as you have before, and again make your unique powers available to me..."

The Robservations paraphrases the quote and combines it with other lines...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Today's quote:
Ep #963 (1970) - Julia - 'You MUST do it, Barnabas, now, before she rises.'

From "Robservations 6/2/03 - #962-963 - A New Vampire in Collinsport"
I know you were leaving to see somebody else, says Megan, but I won't let you--I won't, she says huskily, I want to be yours again. She begins untying the scarf around her throat. Please, she begs, let me... Barnabas, unable to resist this blatant, erotic invitation, sinks his fangs into her throat, and thirstily drinks. She passes out in his arms.  He calls out her name like a lover. Julia enters, yelling for Barnabas in a far different tone of voice. He leads Megan over to a chair, where Julia takes her pulse. "I didn't want her to come back," says Barnabas miserably, "but she knew...she knew there was something wrong with me. Julia gazes steadily at him. "Don't look at me that way!" pleads Barnabas guiltily. Julia drops Megan's arm and rummages in her bag. Do you think I did this by choice? Barnabas asks. No, says Julia, I know you did not. Julia examines Megan.  Will she be all right? Barnabas asks. "She's dead," says Julia quietly. Oh, no, says Barnabas, sinking down into a chair. If not for you, Megan would have been against us, Julia reminds him--if Jeb had told her to kill you or I, she would have done it. Barnabas, head down, orders her, don't comfort me.  I'm just trying to be realistic, she assures him. I vowed that I would get every one of Jeb's followers, says Barn sadly, but I didn't mean it this way--why didn't she go back to Collinwood?--why did I panic?--perhaps I would have died and this all would have been over. It is over now, says Julia, then gulps, "For her." No, says Barnabas--don't forget what will happen to Megan.  She'll become as YOU are, says Julia, horrified. Unless, says Barnabas.  You must do it before she rises, says Julia. Don't you think I know that? demands Barnabas. Do you think I want her to go through the agony that I do, want her to need the blood so strongly...?  Julia's face displays her sorrow as she says, you must do it, now, before she rises.  Yes, Barnabas agrees, and they go over to look at Megan. I must do to her what my enemies want to see happen to me, says Barnabas--a hammer and a stake.

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...
Today's quote:
Ep #861 (1897) - Petofin - 'I MUST think it over very carefully before I speak to her.'

From "Robservations 3/24/03 - #860-861 - Trask is Busted; Kitty Goes to Widows' Hill"
Petofi decides Judith is my answer and starts to open the double doors, then stops, realizing she'll never believe what's happened to him--I must think it over very carefully before speaking to her.

The Robservations does a tiny bit of paraphrasing but gets all the main points across...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding April 7th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
April 7th's quote:
Ep #688 (1969) - Ned - 'Yes, well, he MUST be very usual.'

From "Robservations 10/15/02 - #688-689 - Quentin Punishes David"
Maggie tells Ned she thinks they're going in circles. He suggests David might have returned to the house. Maggie doubts it. He wonders about a little boy wandering these woods all night, unafraid. David is no ordinary boy, Maggie assures him. Ned agrees.

The Robservations doesn't really reference the quote at all. However, it comes up after Maggie tells Ned that an ordinary child might get a little scared but not David and before Maggie agrees with Ned that David is very unusual...

And for those who may miss it because they don't realize the slideshow is active again, here's the screen capture to go with the quote:

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding April 8th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
April 8th's quote:
Ep #604 (1968) - Julia - 'Mrs., Mrs. Stoddard, listen to me. I, I MUST find out what's happened to you.'

From "Robservations 8/14/02 #604/605 - Biting Into an Old Flame"
Liz bolts from the sofa--she KNEW IT! She was right! They gather around her. Barnabas urges her to lie down. I'm not safe here, Liz insists. Julia tells Liz she must find out what's happened to her, and wants Liz to sit on the sofa and explain. Liz begs Vicki to tell them what they discussed, but Vicki encourages her to sit down--Dr. Hoffman will help her. Liz says no one can help her. Julia quietly tells Barnabas to get her bag and a glass of water for Liz. He leaves. Julia asks Liz what she thinks happened to her. That's not important, says Liz, but you thought me dead!--I was for a while. Not true, says Julia. Liz heard them saying she had no heartbeat or pulse, which Julia reasonably says proves she wasn't dead. They THOUGHT she was, and if she hadn't come to, they'd have buried her alive after a couple of days. Vicki corroborates that Liz did tell her and Roger of this very fear.

The Robservations reference part of the quote quite well...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding April 9th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
April 9th's quote:
Ep #454 (1796) - Alexandra Moltke Voiceover - 'A seance has been held in the great house at Collinwood. A seance which has suspended time and space and sent Victoria Winters on an uncertain and frightening journey into the past, back to the year 1795. As she nears the end of that journey, she finds herself a hunted woman. In her place of refuge in the Collins mausoleum she will have a strange dream in which she will discover that she MUST change the course of history.'
This time the slideshow goes where it's only gone five times before: using an opening voiceover. And in this instance the reason isn't necessarily because the voiceover is the only place in the ep where "must" is used. I started to watch Ep #454 and when I came across the first "MUST" line in the ep the character delivering it wasn't on screen and I didn't want to use one of those and I didn't have time to watch more of the ep, so I went with the opening voiceover. And since the quote is not dialogue from a scene, there's no Robservations excerpt. And as before, the graphic -

- was chosen from the exact moment in the voiceover when Alexandra says "must."

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding April 10th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
April 10th's quote:
Ep #343 (1967) - Barnabas - 'Extremely inconvenient to have a confiden-conscience, isn't it? Well, you MUST keep it in close check at every moment.'

From "#0343/0344: Robservations 02/05/02: David's Awful Premonition"
Barnabas enters the lab Julia has set up in the Old House basement. Julia is down there, testing the equipment, a complex labyrinth of tubes and bubbling, vari-colored fluids. Concscience-stricken, Julia tells Barnabas she wants to discontinue the experiment. She elaborates--you wouldn't like being human, she assures him, it brings the torment of guilt. Barnabas, insistent, demands that the new treatments begin at midnight

The Robservations falls in the period where there's little detail and as such the quote isn't referenced. However, the circumstances under which the quote appears is brought up somewhat...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding April 11th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
April 11th's quote:
Ep #175 (1967) - Vicki - 'Well, I'm not sure. But it MUST mean something, or, or Josette wouldn't have made me discover it.'

From "#0174/0175: Robservations 09/21/01: The Missing Body; Peter vs. Laura"
I know you suspect she had something to do with what happened to Liz, says Burke--now tell me why. I can't, says Vicki. Look, he says, sitting beside her, out of your friendship for me, you've got to tell me--why do you suspect her of hurting Liz?--please, Vicki, please tell me! All right, she says, but there's so much to explain--anyway, you probably won't believe me. If you tell me, I'll believe you, he says. Well, she says, the spirit of Josette Collins has been trying to tell me something--twice now, she's led me to a cemetery and a crypt where two of Mrs. Collins' ancestors are buried and--they both have the same name as her--Laura Murdoch--and then a last name--and they both died the same way that woman in Phoenix died--in fire. What does that mean? asks Burke. I'm not sure, says Vicki, but it must mean something, or Josette wouldn't have had me discover it. What does all this have to do with Laura hurting Liz? asks Burke. I wish I knew, says Vicki, but don't forget that she lied about being the last person to see Mrs. Stoddard before she got sick. Well, says Burke, what does that prove? You asked me whether or not I trusted Mrs. Collins, says Vicki, rising and walking away from him, well I don't at all and I'm afraid of her

The Robservations references the quote closely...
April 12th's quote:
Ep #98 (1966) - Liz - 'Oh, that MUST be Mrs. Johnson now.'

From "#0097/0098: Robservations 07/30/01: Is Vicki a Hanscomb?"
Matthew enters the drawing room, where Liz does paperwork at the desk. She tells him Mrs. Johnson is moving in today, she ought to be here any time now. I figured you might have changed your mind about her, says Matthew, disappointed. Certainly not, says Liz, we can use the extra help. I told you I could do everything that needs to be done around here, he reminds her. You've been managing alone long enough, says Liz--besides, Mr. Malloy would want me to engage her--she was his housekeeper for years, and now that he's dead, she has no place to go. She could find other work, says Matthew, people do. I'm not going to discuss it, says Liz, I've engaged her, and I want you to do everything you can to make her feel welcome. I'll try, he promises. There's a knock at the door, and Liz tells Matthew that's Mrs. Johnson-- please let her in.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly, but it does reference the circumstances under which it's delivered...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...
Today's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #10 (-1966: Ep #24) - Ben - 'MUST be some reason, ma'am.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE TEN:
COLLINWOOD: Several men carry an enormous
quantity of trunks inside. Millicent has a temper tantrum
when she learns Ben hasn't been able to bring them all to
the new house and will have to make a special trip. Mil-
licent, "Whay am I always the last to be considered?!" Ben,
"There must be some reason, ma'am." She insists on being
informed when he goes for the trunks; she wants to be sure he
doesn't destroy anything. They leave. ...

For some reason the summary adds the word "there" to the quote, however, Ben doesn't say it in the actual ep...

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release (thanks to YouTube) that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release does -

- also like the VHS release, it has the correct aspect ratio, plus it even tends to show a bit more of the frame and it's clearer than the VHS.

And even though the MGM DVD release (thanks to Dailymotion), like the TGG Direct release, tends to be clearer than the VHS, frustratingly, the aspect ratio is cropped from 4X3 to 16X9 -

And just a reminder, we've seen notations like "DS 1991 Ep #10 (-1966: Ep #24)" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from 1966's Ep #24 but that ep doesn't have any "must" lines to quote from. So, with that in mind, it means that Ep #24 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #13, #22, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #141, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #223, #478, #659, #667, #690, #904 and #1008 as ones without any "must" lines.

(And as usual lately, I've been so busy with other stuff that I haven't already picked out all the eps for April, so at this point I have no idea just how many eps will be coming up without "must" lines...)
