If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding July 30th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]July 30th's quote:
Ep #797 (1897) - Julianka's Ghost - 'You stole the hand from your own people, you who severed the chains that MUST be linked together forever.'

From "Robservations 1/5/03 - #796/797 - Quentin's Bacon is Saved; Another Curse"
It wasn't Quentin's fault, protests Barnabas, nor is he the only one who suffers from the curse--there are two young children whose mother was a gypsy!  I refuse to help them, says Julianka, my own blood or not--they no longer deserve the name because of her--and she points an accusing finger at Magda, who cries out.  Stay away from me, begs Magda.  Julianka says, I will go away and stay away forever, but before I do, I will lay my curse upon you.  "You stole the hand from your own people, you who severed the chains that must be linked together forever.  You who dishonored us--you deserve to die!"  Then let me die, sobs Magda.  No, says Julianka, my curse will bring you tears and more tears, and more graves and only loneliness...   What do you mean? asks Magda.
This is the curse I lay upon your head, says Julianka--first will come three knocks on the door--hear them and begin to weep, for they will herald the beginning, but not the end--the first but not the last--you will live, Magda Rakosi, but everyone you love will die!  Magda rises and begs, don't do this--listen!  Julianka, however, has already faded way.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Quentin - 'Let's go, Magda, MUSTN'T keep our ever-hopeful cousin waiting') was back on June 11th of 2023.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding July 31st's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]July 31st's quote:
Ep #551 (1968) - Barnabas - 'I didn't, Adam. Now you MUST trust me. I'm not even a doctor.'

From "Robservations 7/8/02 - Adam Learns His Origins - #550/551"
Barnabas says he had to protect others from Adam; in the beginning, he reacted out of fear and was dangerous, even if he didn't intend to be. He had to stop him. Adam says that isn't how he hurt him; he made him different from other people and didn't tell him he was a creature. Barnabas is shocked; Dr. Lang was responsible for his creation, not him. Adam doesn't know Dr. Lang, but Barnabas was standing by the table when he woke up. Ever since then, he thought Barnabas created him, but Barn tells him this is wrong; he isn't a doctor.
Adam accuses him of lying; he knows the truth, whoever created other people made them beautiful, but Barnabas created him and made him ugly, and that's why people fear him and don't want to come near him-I am alone, and am tired of being alone--I will not go on being lonely and unhappy, and since ordinary people can't love me, I need someone else who is different to love me and be with me all the time.

The Robservations references some bits of the quote but not the quote itself...

However, this is not the first time a similar quote has appeared as part of the slideshow because back on September 5th of 2020 a reworked version (Barnabas - 'Adam, I did not. You MUST listen to me. I'm not even a doctor') appeared as part of the teaser of Ep #552.

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Nicholas - 'Now, you do understand what you must do?') was back on February 20th of 2021.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding August 1st's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]August 1st's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #12 (-1841PT) - Judge Braithwaite - 'You MUST be mad. I don't know what you're talking about.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE TWELVE
     JUDGE BRAITHEWAITE'S HOME:
                                              ... The judge
agrees to start the procedure.  But after Peter leaves, the letter
turns blank.  And in his bedchamber, Angelique waits.  She
murmurs, "There is no letter."  Startled, he protests, "How did
you get in here? What do you want?"  She speaks hypnotically,
"There is no Mr. Bradford...  There was no visit...  And you...
have been sleeping like a baby..."  He flusters, "You must be
mad!  I don't know what you're talking about."  She soothes,
"You will have the most pleasant dreams...  And when you
wake up, you will remember them...  But you will remember
nothing else... Nothing..." He stares, mesmerized.

The summary references the quote perfectly...

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release does -

- also like the VHS release, it has the correct aspect ratio, plus it even tends to show a bit more of the frame and it's clearer than the VHS.

And even though the MGM DVD release, like the TGG Direct release, tends to be clearer than the VHS, frustratingly, the aspect ratio is cropped from 4X3 to 16X9 -

And just a reminder, we've seen a notation similar to "DS 1991 Ep #8 (-1841PT)" before and in that case it meant that the quote should have come from an 1841PT ep but because there are no longer any 1841PT eps that haven't been quoted from, an alternate version of DS is being used instead. In this case that alternate version is the '91 DS and a quote from its Ep #12 is being used.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding August 2nd's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]August 2nd's quote:
Ep #1167 (1840) - Jeremy - 'Then he MUST never know'

From "#1167/1168: Robservations 11/14/03: An Amazing Revelation For Gerard"
Rose Cottage - A smiling Jeremy Grimes finishes writing something down in a notebook, then hands it to Flora, who exults in having found him--I've needed an accountant for years, and this is the very first time I've ever understood how much I realized in royalties from LOVE'S FIRST SUMMER--oh but your father isn't going to like you working for me, even part time.  Then he must never know, insists Jeremy.  It's hard to believe Mordecai Grimes is your father, says Flora, you're nothing like him, I'm glad to say
--I'm sorry, but I always speak frankly--you don't believe in this witchcraft trial, do you?  I can give you a list of things I don't believe in, says Jeremy, witchcraft is first.  You need say no more, she says, patting his face with approval--you're always welcome here.  Thank you, he says--I'm grateful to you

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding August 3rd's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]August 3rd's quote:
Ep #1103 (1970) - Julia - 'Oh, you're talking about Tad and Carrie. I'm talking about David and Hallie. I... Their lives MUST be restored.'

From "#1103/1104: Robservations 09/12/03: Beginning of the End"
Julia turns on the light--who brought you to life? she asks again.  You have never seen me before, says Daphne, and I don't know what you're talking about.  I know a great deal more than you think I do, says Julia--I insist you answer all the questions I ask.  Daphne walks away from her--I have nothing to say to you, she says.  Unless something is done to stop Gerard, says Julia, the house will be ruined, the family destroyed and the children will die!  Nothing bad will happen if you just leave me alone here with the children tonight, says Daphne--at this moment, I am their only hope of staying alive.  Julia, skeptical, says, you are talking about Tad and Carrie while I'm talking of David and Hallie--their lives must be restored.  Daphne shakes her head--there is nothing I can do for David and Hallie anymore, she says.  There is a great deal you can do to help, insists Julia--I want you to come to the Old House with me and tell me everything you know about Gerard and the children--the children will die--Quentin will be destroyed.  Daphne looks at her, unsure

The Robservations paraphrases the quote a bit...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding August 4th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]August 4th's quote:
Ep #1044 (1970PT) - Angelexis - 'Surely he MUST know that would end me.'

From "#1044/1045: Robservations 07/31/03: Will's Sad Sacrifice"
what are Barnabas Collins' choices?  You must consider the possibility someone else may have taken her, says Julia. No I won't, says Angelique, HE is my enemy, why hasn't he killed her?--I would think he would have done it by now--surely he must know that would end me?--I don't understand him, but I will--I WILL!
Concerned, Julia considers this threat.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding August 5th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]August 5th's quote:
hoDS: Scene #126 (-1970: Ep #960) - Carolyn - 'You MUSTN'T be afraid, David. I'm not going to hurt you -- you know I would never do anything to hurt you --'

From DC's hoDS script:
126    DAVID'S POV   David    from    in  back of him        126
From out of a dark corner he sees her emerge and step
into a shaft of moonlight in a long, diaphonous gown,
her face deathly pale.  She moves toward him slowly,
       her arms outstretched to him.
                                        David
DAVID AND CAROLYN                   Carolyn - where are you
                                                 - I can't see you
As she slowly moves towards him, he start to inch where are
       backwards.                                        you

                             CAROLYN                  Carolyn
You mustn't be afraid, David.  I'm   here David
not going to hurt you -- you know    just come to me
I'd never do anything to hurt you --  I'm here

She is very close to him now.  Suddenly she opens her David
mouth, baring two glistening fangs and makes a grab Oh Carolyn
for him.  The horrified David jumps out of the way  I knew it
and SCREAMS at her.                               I knew it
                                                       I knew you were
                             DAVID                      alive
Stay away from me!! You're dead.

He turns and runs for dear life back along the walkway.

And the script has the quote perfectly.

And as with other hoDS screen captures, I used one taken from the VHS -

- so that it would be in keeping with the dimensions of the screen captures from the original show, but this is what the Blu-ray looks like -

- and apparently, there's was, or perhaps still is an alternate 4X3 print of hoDS that, unlike the VHS, shows more of the frame at the top but less on the sides and bottom, and it was shown as the July 14, 1985 installment of Elvira's Movie Macabre. Here's a screen capture from it:

And Ep #960 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #13, #22, #24, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #141, #145, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #223, #242, #478, #659, #667, #690, #904, #1008 and #1087 as ones without any "must" lines.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding August 6th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]August 6th's quote:
Ep #854 (1897) - Petofi - 'Quentin Collins, you MUST bend your will to mine and there shall be no resistance because I am the fire in the air, the water of the Earth. I am the powers of all the stars.'

From "Robservations 3/19/03 - #854-855 - Body Snatcher"
Petofi sits in the chair and intones, "Quentin Collins, you must bend your will to mine, and there shall be no resistance, because I am the fire, the air, the water and the earth, I am the powers of all the stars! You will hear the rustling of leaves in a thousand trees, telling you the wind of change is upon you--so it is, and so it shall be, forevermore!"

The Robservations gets a bit of the quote wrong but references most of it well...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding August 7th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]August 7th's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #1 (-1968/69) - Sara's Ghost - 'You MUST stop, Barnabas. You MUST stop.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - MINISERIES PART ONE (EPISODE ONE):
VICTORIA'S ROOM: She brushes her hair, then goes to
the window.  Outside, Barnabas watches.  He bares his fangs,
his eyes glowing yellow.  Then he's startled by the sound of a
haunting, childish voice calling, "Barnabas...."  His eyes turn
normal.  He turns and sees her figure.  Astounded, he calls,
"Sara - is that you?"  She begs him, "You must stop...!"  Elated
he calls, "You have come back!"  She runs from him.  He franti-
cally follows, shouting, "Wait!  Sara don't leave me!  Please
don't go away!"  He follows her into the woods.  But the child
vanishes completely.  "Sara...  My sweet little sister...  COME
BACK!"  Sobbing, he drops to his knees.  His voice is torn in an-
guish.   "Please don't hate me...  Please!  I CANNOT HELP
MYSELF!!!"

The summary references only part of the quote - this despite the fact that the summary follows with the script and the script does indeed have the full quote...

And an interesting bit of trivia is that even though the pilot as aired ends with the above scene, the pilot script does not. The pilot rearranges the sequence of some of the scenes, and rather than end with the above sequence, the scripted ending begins with this post:
Setting up the first scene in the script's next sequence:
whereas the pilot ends with the above sequence beginning with this post:
Moving through several of the next scenes in the sequence:

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

And just a reminder, we've seen a notation similar to "DS 1991 Ep #1 (-1968/69)" before and in that case it meant that the quote should have come from a 1968/69 ep but because 1968/69, like 1841PT, has reached the point where there are no longer any eps that haven't been quoted from, an alternate version of DS is being used instead. In this case that alternate version is the '91 DS and a quote from its Ep #1 is being used.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding August 8th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]August 8th's quote:
Ep #598 (1968) - Prof. Stokes - 'I MUST see Barnabas Collins at once.'

From "Robservations 8/9/02 - #598/599"
Willie is about to leave the Old House with a bag of food when someone knocks. He hides the bag behind a column and opens the door. It's Stokes, who says he must see Barnabas or Julia right away. Willie doesn't know where they are, and Stokes notes his nervousness. Willie has something important to do, so Stokes lets him go. The doors blow open and Willie wonders why. Stokes glances outside and says it wasn't the wind; the trees aren't moving. What's going on, wonders Willie. Stokes says it's here again. The chandelier and curtains begin to blow. Willie is spooked, and Stokes calls it the same astral projection that was there last night, after the experiment was completed. He thinks it has something to do with--what? Willie is anxious to get out of there, and the strange happenings stop. Willie doesn't care, he's leaving. Stokes stands in the middle of the room, calling it utterly fascinating.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly but does refer to its circumstances...

[spoiler]August 9th's quote:
Ep #452 (1796) - Joshua - 'Barnabas is dead. Sarah is dead. As difficult as it is, you MUST accept it.'

From "#0451/0452: Robservations 04/22/02: Things Look Grim For Everyone"
it's insanity to think Barnabas alive and hidden in a room in the tower just because she saw a light. She heard his voice, crying out in pain, insists Naomi--it was Barnabas. Both of our children are dead, Joshua says--the mind can play strange tricks, believe it for your own sake. She did hear voices, if not Barnabas?, says Naomi--what happened at the Old House?

[spoiler]August 10th's quote:
Ep #339 (1967) - Barnabas - 'Don't argue with me. Those notes MUST be burned now, tonight, before they get into the wrong hands.'

From "#0339/0340: Robservations 02/01/02: Woodard Knows Everything"
When Julia keeps insisting she needs her notes, Barnabas says they're going to Collinwood right now to destroy them--no argument! She offers to bring it back to the Old House, but he wants to check out the lock to make sure it wasn't tampered with. Julia expresses awe over his show of fear; she didn't think he could feel any emotion, not even fear. Barn just hustles her out the door, not wanting to get involved in that touchy discussion, either.

Again, the Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly but does refer to its circumstances...

[spoiler]August 11th's quote:
Ep #172 (1967) - Laura - 'You MUSTN'T do that. Leave the fire alone, I want it left burning all the time.'

From "#0172/0173: Robservations 09/20/01: Sarah Guards the Gate"
It may be an old New England custom, says Sarah, but I never held with anything like those seances and that kind of tomfoolery. Neither do I, says Laura. I smell something fishy, says Sarah (did Roger bring home his work again?, and it's not the wind off the bay, and I don't like it. Time will tell, says Laura--and if one has enough time, it will tell everything. I'm going to try to keep him away from Vicki, vows Sarah, picking up a shovel from the andirons. that might be a very wise idea, says Laura. I'd better finish up here and get back to the house, says Sarah, tamping out the fire. What are you doing? asks Laura. Trying to put out the fire so I can clean your hearth, replies Sarah. Laura rises. You mustn't do that, she orders
--leave it alone--I want it left burning all the time. Sarah looks are her oddly. It gets awfully chilly in here, says Laura by way of explanation. It won't take but a minute, says Sarah. You heard what I said--don't touch that fire--don't ever touch it, ever, do you understand that? asks Laura desperately--I want that fire burning all the time! Yes, Mrs. Collins, says Sarah. Thank you, says Laura, much more quietly. Sarah returns the andiron and leaves the cottage, but not without giving Laura a look first. Laura sits by the fire

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #89 (1966) - Liz - 'Seeing you here at this time of day MUST mean that something's wrong.'

From "#0089/0090: Robservations 07/24/01: Should I Stay or Should I go?"
Liz goes to answer a knock at the door. It's Amos, and she cordially invites him in--seeing you here this time of day must mean something is wrong, she says. There is, something real wrong, says Amos, Burke Devlin called me--asked me to get in touch with Ahearn, Billadou and Cartwright--he said that he had some important business to talk over with us at his room in the hotel. What did he want? asks Roger. I talked it over with the other boys, says Amos, and we all agreed we should go over and find out what was so important--when we got there, Burke told us he was going to take over Logansport--fleet, canning industry, everything--then he gives us this big pitch that he wants us to ditch Collins and join up with him.
I don't believe it! says Liz, stunned. It was a shocker, all right, says Amos

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And an interesting bit of trivia is that this is the only "MUST" line in this ep.

moment, DR. JULIA HOFFMAN (attractive, professional) enters.
Joe stands, concerned...

                    JOE
          Dr. Hoffman. What happened?

                    HOFFMAN
Ben Griffin found her inside his
garage.  From the look of things,
she must have fallen through the
          skylight.

                    JOE
          The skylight?

                   ELIZABETH
Doctor, is she going to be all
          right?

Hoffman checks the I.V. dripping blood into Carolyn's system.

                    HOFFMAN
She's cracked three ribs and lost a
lot of blood.  The next twenty-four
          hours are critical.

Dark Shadows - M. Verheiden - 1/19/04                 30.

                    JOE
          I don't understand.  The Sheriff
said she'd been attacked by an
          animal.

                    HOFFMAN
That's true.  We found bite marks
          in her throat...

                    ROGER
              (incredulous)
That's insane.  What kind of animal
could have thrown her like that?

                    HOFFMAN
I have to be honest with you.  I
          don't know.

Carolyn suddenly MOANS.  Concerned, Elizabeth pulls away from
Roger and goes to her daughter.

                    HOFFMAN (CONT'D)
I'll be back in a minute...

And as you can see the quote doesn't appear anywhere in the script. And that's because the scene was completely reworked before shooting. What happens in the pilot is the scene begins immediately with Joe explaining to Elizabeth and Roger that "Ben Griffin found her outside his garage," with that followed by the quote. Joe's lines are a reworking of info that was originally scripted to be delivered by Dr. Hoffman. (And in the pilot there's actually no reference to Carolyn being found inside Griffin's Garage or having fallen through the skylight - a shame because Dr. Hoffman's original lines would have been a "MUST" quote. In fact, the scene is almost entirely different in the actual pilot. Check out -
