Having found the doll with the ascot tied around its throat, Trask stands in Collinwood's foyer.  Daphne comes out of the kitchen and asks him what he was doing in Quentin's lab.  You must be mistaken, says Lamar.  I'm surely not, says Daphne, I was standing in the kitchen and saw you come up the cellar stairs--Mr. Collins never allows anyone down there when he isn't here.  I suggest you forget you saw me this evening, advises a nervous Trask.  I shall do no such thing, Daphne assures him, I intend to tell Mr. Collins you were there.  Very well, says Trask, if you wish to be in league with the devil in this house...  With the devil? She demands.  Or perhaps you're already in league with him, says Trask, and that's why you're so anxious to help him.  I'm sorry, says Daphne, I don't understand what you're talking about.  All right, says Trask, reaching into his cape and producing the doll (with the ascot still wrapped around its throat; doesn't he care about saving Desmond?)

Gabriel goes on, ranting, "All you Collinses are always talking, you think it's so precious, all those words!--it's not what I want, I don't want your words."  She steps forward--Gabriel, she says sympathetically.  He raises the knife, snarling, "I said I don't want your words!"  She cries out in horror--"NO!"  Give me those jewels or I'll cut them off you, he threatens, his mouth a hideous rictus.  No, Gabriel, no! she cries.  Stop calling me that, he commands--I hate that name--I hate myself--and oh, I hate you, so much...his demeanor changes abruptly, and he asks, sounding normal again, "What are you doing here?"  You asked me to meet you, don't you remember? she asks.  I did? he asks--well, you were a fool to come, he giggles.  Perhaps, she says, but I'm still your mother.  My mother? he asks, reverting back, "You know, you'd like just to stop me from what I'm supposed to do--well it's not going to stop me, all those lies--because I'm going to kill you, and everyone else!"  Listen to me, she begs, I am your mother!  He holds up the knife, pronouncing it "the only family I'll ever need," this knife!  He menaces her, about to stab her.  Kendrick appears and they begin to grapple in the gazebo.  Kendrick knocks Gabriel to the ground, retrieves the knife, and orders Flora, get out of here--I'll take care of Gabriel!  You mustn't hurt him, protests Flora, he isn't well, he's confused.  You seem very concerned, considering he was about to kill you, points out an agitated Kendrick.  He IS my son, Flora says.  And Stella was my sister, but she had no one to plead for her life, did she? asks Kendrick.

There was sobbing coming from a padlocked room in the cellar, says Sarah--nobody in that house could have been in that room, nor any human being--it had to be something inhuman. Come on, says Burke, you're a sensible woman, surely you don't believe that! Yes I do, she says, I was there, you weren't, I know what happened! And it frightened you enough to give out on everything we've been working on? he asks. Of course I'm frightened, wouldn't you be? she asks. It could be the ventilating system, he says--systems in old houses like Collinwood--miles and miles of pipe--connecting the rooms--if someone made a sound in one of the rooms, it would be heard in another room--or maybe even the basement. And you think what I heard must have come from another room? she asks. It's the only logical explanation I can think of, he says. Why would anybody be sobbing in the middle of the night like that? she asks. I don't know, says Burke, what do I know from sobbing women and females? I guess it could have happened that way, she admits. Could have and probably did, says Burke convincingly--now, you don't believe in the bogeyman, do you? You make me sound foolish, she says, smiling slightly. I don't mean to, he says, patting her arm, I just don't want you to give up.

Burke and Patterson come back upstairs as a call comes in that Jason has been captured.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all because the ep falls in the period where there's really little detail. However, how things unfold leading to the quote is that after learning Jason has been captured, the sheriff asks that he be brought to Collinwood, which enrages Roger. Liz asks if it's really necessary because she'd rather not see him. Roger agrees. However, the sheriff apologizes and says there are some specific questions that he wants to ask Jason about the trunk in the basement. Liz believes she could answer them, but the sheriff doubts that. Liz then asks if she will have to identify the body and it's stated that won't be necessary, and after that is when the quote comes up...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Jason - 'For many, no price is too high for the truth. And now, gentlemen, I really MUST leave you') was back on August 28th.

Does his latest girlfriend know he's already married? questions Suki evilly, and Nathan grabs her wrist. She's even brought their marriage contract with her, Suki exults. Nathan promises to give her what he's saved--about $400--if she goes back to Baltimore on a carriage leaving at daybreak. She says that would be fine--until the barkeep informs her that Nathan's fiancee is a very wealthy Collins. You can almost see the dollar signs dancing in Suki's pretty blue eyes as she says, "That's interesting"

Stokes and Carolyn go to Adam. Outside the door, he says he had best see Adam alone--he knows what he must do. Carolyn begs him not to hurt the big guy, but he says he might have to; a good deal of trouble can be caused by kindness. After she leaves, he knocks on Adam's door.

The Robservations doesn't directly reference the quote and the part that it does reference, it paraphrases...

And Prof. Stokes does indeed say that he's made up his mind what he must do and that quote may also show up in a future installment of the slideshow.

And speaking of quotes from this ep appearing in the slideshow, a new, even more exciting has been reached because with this latest quote from EP #550, it's the first time seven quotes from the same ep have appeared in the slideshow. The first (Adam - 'I don't mean to frighten her, you MUST TELL her that, then she'll love me') was back on June 26th of 2020, the second (Adam - 'What do you mean I didn't exist? I MUST have existed!') was back on December 6th of 2020, the third (Adam - 'A man MUST grab what he wants!') was back on June 5th of 2021, the fourth (Adam - 'Professor, listen: I love her-- Carolyn. She does not understand. You MUST tell her for me') was back on November 5th of 2021 (apparently we loved quoting Adam and he loved using "must" - he fit into Collinsport so quickly ), and with the fifth (Carolyn - 'Professor, you MUST take him with you--tonight'), which was back on February 15th of 2024, we finally started quoting someone else, as was also the case with the sixth (Prof. Stokes - 'Then why MUST he be taken away from here? What has happened?'), which was back on July 29th.

He'll never say he loves me, laments Amanda--he must, or else...¦when there's a knock at the door, I'll answer it and Mr. Best will be there--and this time he'll give me no more time. Two hours! says Julia, heading for the phone--Professor Osmond said Quentin's portrait would be ready at 3--we will have to see it before then--go back to the hotel and stay with Grant, says Julia, I will call you--"Amanda, you must keep trying."

You're right about that, agrees Burke--the sheriff wouldn't believe Roger killed Malloy if he saw him do it on Main Street with a butcher knife at high noon. Jeff wonders if there's another way back, but Barnabas says the path is the most direct way. Jeff says he should have run into her, then. Barnabas asks if he's implying he didn't tell the truth; his tone implies that. Jeff says he'll pose it another way--he came to get Vicki, and if they took the same direct route, they should have met at some point. Barnabas agrees, but. . .then Barnabas remembers Adam's threat that he'd be sorry for his decision not to give him a mate. "Oh my God!" Barnabas exclaims as an annoyed Jeff continues blathering.
