If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding September 11th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]September 11th's quote:
Ep #1153 (1840) - Lamar - 'Laboratory? Why, you MUST be mistaken.'

From "#1152/1153: Robservations 11/04/03: Proof Positive"
Having found the doll with the ascot tied around its throat, Trask stands in Collinwood's foyer.  Daphne comes out of the kitchen and asks him what he was doing in Quentin's lab.  You must be mistaken, says Lamar.  I'm surely not, says Daphne, I was standing in the kitchen and saw you come up the cellar stairs--Mr. Collins never allows anyone down there when he isn't here.  I suggest you forget you saw me this evening, advises a nervous Trask.  I shall do no such thing, Daphne assures him, I intend to tell Mr. Collins you were there.  Very well, says Trask, if you wish to be in league with the devil in this house...  With the devil? She demands.  Or perhaps you're already in league with him, says Trask, and that's why you're so anxious to help him.  I'm sorry, says Daphne, I don't understand what you're talking about.  All right, says Trask, reaching into his cape and producing the doll (with the ascot still wrapped around its throat; doesn't he care about saving Desmond?)

The Robservations leaves out parts of the quote but references what it does well...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Randall - 'You MUST be the new governess') was back on October 22nd of 2022.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding September 12th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]September 12th's quote:
Ep #1227 (1841PT) - Flora - 'Oh you MUSTN'T hurt him. He's not well. He's confused.'

From "#1226/1227: Robservations 12/30/03: Gabriel, Insane"
Gabriel goes on, ranting, "All you Collinses are always talking, you think it's so precious, all those words!--it's not what I want, I don't want your words."  She steps forward--Gabriel, she says sympathetically.  He raises the knife, snarling, "I said I don't want your words!"  She cries out in horror--"NO!"  Give me those jewels or I'll cut them off you, he threatens, his mouth a hideous rictus.  No, Gabriel, no! she cries.  Stop calling me that, he commands--I hate that name--I hate myself--and oh, I hate you, so much...his demeanor changes abruptly, and he asks, sounding normal again, "What are you doing here?"  You asked me to meet you, don't you remember? she asks.  I did? he asks--well, you were a fool to come, he giggles.  Perhaps, she says, but I'm still your mother.  My mother? he asks, reverting back, "You know, you'd like just to stop me from what I'm supposed to do--well it's not going to stop me, all those lies--because I'm going to kill you, and everyone else!"  Listen to me, she begs, I am your mother!  He holds up the knife, pronouncing it "the only family I'll ever need," this knife!  He menaces her, about to stab her.  Kendrick appears and they begin to grapple in the gazebo.  Kendrick knocks Gabriel to the ground, retrieves the knife, and orders Flora, get out of here--I'll take care of Gabriel!  You mustn't hurt him, protests Flora, he isn't well, he's confused.  You seem very concerned, considering he was about to kill you, points out an agitated Kendrick.  He IS my son, Flora says.  And Stella was my sister, but she had no one to plead for her life, did she? asks Kendrick.

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Kendrick - 'But now I realize we MUST work together and break down this door!--and let truth in') was back on August 3rd of 2023.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding September 13th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]September 13th's quote:
Ep #99 (1966) - Mrs. Johnson - 'And... and you think what I heard MUST have come from another room?'

From "#0099/0100: Robservations 07/31/01: Pen-Man-Ship"
What's all this about a haunted house? he asks. If you'd been with me last night, you'd have seen, she says--I'll tell you, I'm so frightened, I don't know if I can stay in that house--I mean it--I didn't count on an experience like I had last night, never. Calm down, he says, sit down. She sits on the sofa and he sits beside her and asks her to tell him about it. There was sobbing coming from a padlocked room in the cellar, says Sarah--nobody in that house could have been in that room, nor any human being--it had to be something inhuman. Come on, says Burke, you're a sensible woman, surely you don't believe that! Yes I do, she says, I was there, you weren't, I know what happened! And it frightened you enough to give out on everything we've been working on? he asks. Of course I'm frightened, wouldn't you be? she asks. It could be the ventilating system, he says--systems in old houses like Collinwood--miles and miles of pipe--connecting the rooms--if someone made a sound in one of the rooms, it would be heard in another room--or maybe even the basement. And you think what I heard must have come from another room? she asks. It's the only logical explanation I can think of, he says. Why would anybody be sobbing in the middle of the night like that? she asks. I don't know, says Burke, what do I know from sobbing women and females? I guess it could have happened that way, she admits. Could have and probably did, says Burke convincingly--now, you don't believe in the bogeyman, do you? You make me sound foolish, she says, smiling slightly. I don't mean to, he says, patting her arm, I just don't want you to give up.

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Burke - 'No one MUST know there's ever been any connection between you and me') was back on April 20th of 2020, and the second (Ezra Hearne - 'We're not stupid, at least not as stupid as you MUST think') was back on June 2nd of 2023.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding September 14th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]September 14th's quote:
Ep #273 (1967) - Sheriff Patterson - 'There are, however, some other questions that MUST be answered.'

From "#0273/0274: Robservations 12/06/01: Jason Gets Careless"
Burke and Patterson come back upstairs as a call comes in that Jason has been captured.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all because the ep falls in the period where there's really little detail. However, how things unfold leading to the quote is that after learning Jason has been captured, the sheriff asks that he be brought to Collinwood, which enrages Roger. Liz asks if it's really necessary because she'd rather not see him. Roger agrees. However, the sheriff apologizes and says there are some specific questions that he wants to ask Jason about the trunk in the basement. Liz believes she could answer them, but the sheriff doubts that. Liz then asks if she will have to identify the body and it's stated that won't be necessary, and after that is when the quote comes up...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Jason - 'For many, no price is too high for the truth. And now, gentlemen, I really MUST leave you') was back on August 28th.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding September 15th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]September 15th's quote:
Ep #419 (1796) - Suki - 'Then Miss Collins MUST be very wealthy.'

From "#0419/0420: Robservations 03/29/02: Mrs. Lt. Nathan Forbes!"
Does his latest girlfriend know he's already married? questions Suki evilly, and Nathan grabs her wrist. She's even brought their marriage contract with her, Suki exults. Nathan promises to give her what he's saved--about $400--if she goes back to Baltimore on a carriage leaving at daybreak. She says that would be fine--until the barkeep informs her that Nathan's fiancee is a very wealthy Collins. You can almost see the dollar signs dancing in Suki's pretty blue eyes as she says, "That's interesting"

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly but does its circumstances...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Mr. Mooney - 'Oh, I'm sorry, Miss, but a lady MUST be escorted by a gentle...') was back on August 16th.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding September 16th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]September 16th's quote:
Ep #550 (1968) - Prof. Stokes - 'Perhaps I MUST. A great deal of trouble can be caused by kindness.'

From "Robservations 7/8/02 - Adam Learns His Origins - #550/551"
Stokes and Carolyn go to Adam. Outside the door, he says he had best see Adam alone--he knows what he must do. Carolyn begs him not to hurt the big guy, but he says he might have to; a good deal of trouble can be caused by kindness. After she leaves, he knocks on Adam's door.

The Robservations doesn't directly reference the quote and the part that it does reference, it paraphrases...

And Prof. Stokes does indeed say that he's made up his mind what he must do and that quote may also show up in a future installment of the slideshow.

And speaking of quotes from this ep appearing in the slideshow, a new, even more exciting has been reached because with this latest quote from EP #550, it's the first time seven quotes from the same ep have appeared in the slideshow. The first (Adam - 'I don't mean to frighten her, you MUST TELL her that, then she'll love me') was back on June 26th of 2020, the second (Adam - 'What do you mean I didn't exist? I MUST have existed!') was back on December 6th of 2020, the third (Adam - 'A man MUST grab what he wants!') was back on June 5th of 2021, the fourth (Adam - 'Professor, listen: I love her-- Carolyn. She does not understand. You MUST tell her for me') was back on November 5th of 2021 (apparently we loved quoting Adam and he loved using "must" - he fit into Collinsport so quickly [easter_wink]), and with the fifth (Carolyn - 'Professor, you MUST take him with you--tonight'), which was back on February 15th of 2024, we finally started quoting someone else, as was also the case with the sixth (Prof. Stokes - 'Then why MUST he be taken away from here? What has happened?'), which was back on July 29th.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding September 17th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]September 17th's quote:
Ep #799 (1897) - Nancy Barrett Voiceover - 'A cry of despair in the night, for many strange things have happened since the blood-red sun set on the great estate of Collinwood. And in the main house, a man grieves for a dead child he did not know was his, while in an old house nearby, a gypsy, lamenting a curse which has killed her husband as well, decides she MUST destroy what has brought her to disaster.'

This time the slideshow goes where it's only gone six times before: using an opening voiceover. And as has been the case in the past, the graphic -

- was chosen from the exact moment when "must" comes up in the voiceover.

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Charity - 'Your wife MUST have been very young and very beautiful when she died') was back on June 7th.

[spoiler]September 18th's quote:
Ep #1030 (1970PT) - Timothy Stokes - 'No, you MUST go alone.'

From "#1030/1031: Robservations 07/22/03: Papa's Revelation"
I am far beyond your level of thinking, I'm a most unusual man, the first modern scientist to use the black arts. Yes, she agrees, you're the greatest scientist in the world!  Flattery worked when you were alive, he says, but that was before I did this--you're only an element mixed with another element. WHAT DID YOU DO? she cries. I went back to an experiment I started long ago, one that terrified me, he says, but when I saw you lying dead before me I had a reason to finish it--I was ruthless. How, Father, now? she asks. Don't ask me, he begs. Please, she cries, share it with me, please! I cannot do it alone, he says, that is all I will say.

The Robservations doesn't directly reference the quote but it does its circumstances...

And Ep #1030 is this month's first example where Midnite serendipitously happened upon an ep that hadn't been quoted from before.

[spoiler]September 19th's quote:
Ep #931 (1969) - Julia - 'All right, Amanda, you MUST go back to the hotel. You MUST stay with Grant Douglas. You MUST do everything you can to make him remember.'

From "Robs 5/8/03 - #930-931 - Lung Brat Plays With Paul; Grant Sees Q's Portrait"
Julia enters.  I've been waiting and waiting, complains Amanda. "Wait just a moment," says Julia. Please, begs Amanda, Mr. Best is here in Collinsport--I saw him in the hotel lobby, simply looking at his watch and smiling at me--tonight he'll come for me, I only have two hours left!  Go back to the hotel, Julia orders, stay with Grant, do everything you can to help him remember! He'll never say he loves me, laments Amanda--he must, or else...¦when there's a knock at the door, I'll answer it and Mr. Best will be there--and this time he'll give me no more time. Two hours! says Julia, heading for the phone--Professor Osmond said Quentin's portrait would be ready at 3--we will have to see it before then--go back to the hotel and stay with Grant, says Julia, I will call you--"Amanda, you must keep trying."

The Robservations doesn't directly reference the quote but it does its circumstances, even if it paraphrases a bit...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Amanda - 'No, he'll never say he loves me! Oh, he MUST! Or else...') was back on August 3rd of 2020, and the second (Megan - 'I MUST thank you, MUSTN'T I?') was back on October 12th of 2021.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding September 20th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]September 20th's quote:
Ep #1154_1155 (1840) - Judard - 'But you MUST learn the lessons first-- the first being that you MUST tell me everything. You MUST not keep any secrets from me.'

From "#1154_1155/1156: Robservations 11/05/03: A Death; An Arrest For Murder"
Aren't you going to be nice to me? she simpers, or are you going to be awful like you are sometimes?  He gives her a long, rough kiss, then draws away.  That's what you came for, isn't it? he asks.  I don't know what I came for, she says, all I know is I feel terrible at Collinwood--sometimes I feel like I can't stand it anymore.  You took a very big chance coming up to my room, he warns.  You should be glad I did, says Edith.  Why? he asks.  Nothing, she says--you said you had plans for me--I want to know what they are.  And I want to know what you meant that I should be glad you're up here, he says.  You said you could change my life, she says.  I can, he says, but you must learn the lessons first--the first being that you must tell me everything--you must not keep any secrets from me--tell me what you know.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Samantha - 'Yes, I MUST, MUSTN'T I? I never really believed that Quentin's interest in the black arts was anything but a foolish eccentricity-- but I MUST now-- I do!') was back on April 5th of 2021, and the second (Constable Ward - 'Randall's reasons for going to the police MUST have been mentioned') was back on April 1st of 2023.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding September 21st's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]September 21st's quote:
Ep #100 (1966) - Burke - 'There MUST be some answer.'

From "#0099/0100: Robservations 07/31/01: Pen-Man-Ship"
I'm still not sure that roger killed Malloy, says Vicki. I don't understand you, says Burke, exasperated, you know the facts, how can you doubt it. All I know is that Roger was at Lookout Point the night Malloy was killed, says Vicki--I can't be anymore sure of things than that--he could have had a motive to kill him, and he could have left the house earlier than he said he did, but I cannot be certain of these things! You sound like you're trying to protect him, says Burke. Vicki rises and walks over to him. No, she says, I'm not--I'm frightened, but I think there is a very good chance he did kill Malloy. Well? asks Burke. I'm still not positive, says Vicki, and if I'm not positive, how can the sheriff be? You're right about that, agrees Burke--the sheriff wouldn't believe Roger killed Malloy if he saw him do it on Main Street with a butcher knife at high noon. I can't stand by and do nothing, either, she says, that's not right. there must be some answer, insists Burke, balling his fist in frustration.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Burke - 'Roger was guilty of that manslaughter charge. Malloy MUST have found out') was back on February 21st.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding September 22nd's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]September 22nd's quote:
Ep #800 (1897[-1967]) - Tim - 'But not with similar content. You MUST admit, this hand is unique, isn't it?'

From "Robservations 1/7/03 - #800-801/2 - Count Petofi - To Tell the Truth"
Tim holds the hand up before Evan, laughing--I've been very curious about my new possession, says Tim. What about it? asks Evan.
I hope you can answer that, says Tim. My field of study is law, not gypsy artifacts, says Evan. What makes you think it has something to do with gypsies? asks Tim. I've seen boxes with carvings like that before, answers Evan. But not with similar contents, says Tim, this hand is unique, isn't it? I don't know, replies Evan. I think you do know; says Tim, I heard Magda talking. Is that why you came here? queries Evan. One of the reasons, says Tim--it will do for a start. He holds the hand out to Evan, who backs away, warning--if you don't know how to use it, that's one dangerous thing. I know enough about how to use it, says Tim, and before we are finished speaking, will know a great deal more--won't I? demands Tim. Evan keeps backing away. Dangerous for you, but not for me, says Tim, because I intend to let the hand work its will on you. Noticing how much this scares Evan, Tim deliberately pushes the hand closer to the lawyer's terrified face.

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first ('Victor' - 'I MUST maintain a certain innocence in order to be worthy of the beauty I constantly seek') was back on June 27th ([occasion13]).

[spoiler]September 23rd's quote:
Ep #420 (1796) - Barnabas - 'Why doesn't she come to the window? I MUST see her one more time before she leaves. One more time. If she will not come to the window, then I MUST go to her.'

From "#0419/0420: Robservations 03/29/02: Mrs. Lt. Nathan Forbes!"
It's 2 AM and Barnabas is tired of waiting for Josette to come to the window, so he goes to her instead.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding September 24th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]September 24th's quote:
Ep #553 (1968) - Barnabas - 'Oh, it MUST have been 40 minutes ago.'

From "Robservations 7/9/02 - #552/553 - Adam Takes Rash Action"
Old House - Barnabas, reading, answers Jeff's frantic knocking at his door. Tell Vicki I'm here, instructs Jeff, but Barn says she left already. Jeff said she never made it back, or he wouldn't be here. Barnabas, perturbed, says Vicki left 40 minutes ago. Jeff wonders if there's another way back, but Barnabas says the path is the most direct way. Jeff says he should have run into her, then. Barnabas asks if he's implying he didn't tell the truth; his tone implies that. Jeff says he'll pose it another way--he came to get Vicki, and if they took the same direct route, they should have met at some point. Barnabas agrees, but. . .then Barnabas remembers Adam's threat that he'd be sorry for his decision not to give him a mate. "Oh my God!" Barnabas exclaims as an annoyed Jeff continues blathering.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly but does its circumstances...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Barnabas - 'Now, listen to me. You MUST tell me where Adam is hiding. It's imperative I talk to him') was back on August 17th.
