I'm certain his spirit has lived all this time--and now it has taken possession of some living person--and he's in complete control of that person. Do you have any idea who that might be? asks Laszlo. Yes I do, she says--I believe it is Gerard Stiles--because he is the one who called me by the name Judah knew me as--Miranda--and the very next time I saw him was the night I had the vision of Amadeus Collins--the judge who convicted Judah Zachary--a direct relation to the Collins family--that's why I'm sure Judah has come back--revenge!--he swore on the stand that he would return and destroy everyone responsible for his murder--that means everyone in the Collins family--and it also means me, she adds desperately. You're convinced this vision of Amadeus was induced by Judah! says Laszlo Yes, through Gerard Stiles, says Valerie--I'm not sure, I need some proof that he's the one. How can you do that? he asks. I can perform a simple ceremony, she says, but I must have some personal possession of Gerard's--his watch fob, yes, the one he wears all the time. How are you going to get something like that? asks the gypsy. I'm not, she says annoyed that he's missed the obvious--you are.
Vicki walks downstairs, still slowly, fearfully. She glances into the living room, then tries the door to the outside, which she finds locked. She enters the living room, checks the window and finds it locked, too, and she can't seem to unlock it. She continues to look around the room, finding another door, which she rattles and finds locked, too. She hears the tinkling music from Josette's music box, then Nicholas Blair's voice, which she doesn't recognize. She says she's never been to this house before, but he says of course she has, look around! She asks, "Where are you? Please let me go!" He tells her she can go as soon as she tells him who he is and where she is. She knows neither, and he says then she must stay. She shakes her head, upset. The music grows louder, and she begs him to stop it. Where would you hear Josette's music box? he asks. The Old House, she replies. And that's where you are, Nick's voice tells her, but she denies that. He tells her to think harder, remember what happened--she left Collinwood to come to the Old House to see "me". You aren't Barnabas, says Vicki, and he says to think again--she's in the Old House, isn't she? Vicki is unsure, and he tells her to try to cooperate or he won't be able to help her. Does she know who he is yet? She thinks so--Barnabas. Splendid he praises her. Where are you? he asks, and she replies, "The Old House." When she leaves, she will go to Collinwood, she says, because Jeff is waiting for her and she's late. He tells her to go home, hurry, she doesn't want Jeff to start worrying, does she? He tells her to go to the door, open it, and return to Collinwood. "Back to Collinwood," repeats Vicki, and exits easily through the front door. Nicholas and Angelique, grinning, observer her departure, Nick very proud of himself indeed.
Grandmother didn't approve of showing emotion, says Judith; she believed in going on and holding one's head up high (that explains much about the Collinses)!--I must act as she would want me to, even though everything else is wrong--do you believe in the hereafter? He turns the question back to her--do you? I sometimes wish not, confesses Judith; if she's watching us, how distressed she must be--I don't believe anyone took the will--she just didn't put it where she said she would. Barnabas admits he has considered the possibility someone took it. Judith asks, why would HE take it? Barnabas calls her on that "he." She begs him to tell her, if he knows, who took it.
She turns and finds another letter from Joanna: "I am coming for you now, but please do not be afraid--what I must do I do with love--your sister, Joanna." Daphne holds the letter in both hands and calls to Joanna--are you here?--please don't hurt me--help me! The front doors blow open, scaring Daphne, who walks over to close them. Thunder rolls. Daphne finds her sister's cape on the floor-Joanna, why are you doing this? she cries, please, don't you understand, you can help me, please help me--let me have the love you had--if anything is going to destroy me, can't it be that love?--why must it be you?--Joanna, please, can you hear me--please help me! She hears a door opening upstairs and, terrorized, runs into the drawing room and closes the doors, covering her face with her hands.
Turning his back, he orders, answer the knock at the door. She does--it's Hamilton, who bids her good evening and asks for Quentin. Quentin identifies himself. Hamilton comes in, apologizing for the inconvenience--can you spare a few moments? I'm afraid I can't, says Quentin rudely. Then I'm afraid I must insists, says the Inspector--you see, I have some very important questions to ask about the death of the first Mrs. Collins. Quentin and Maggie exchange glances.
David's room - He's checked the book but has been unable to come up with anything so far. Thunder roars. David finds just what they've been looking for--and it can't frighten Jeb if we get rid of it--and we can--it says that if the spirit of a dead enemy should manifest itself from beyond the grave, there is a way to dispel its presence. The lights go out, frightening Amy. Just the storm, says David--bring a candle over--hurry. No sooner does he light the candle than a wind blows it out. It wasn't the wind, says David, there's a presence from beyond the grave in the room with us--I can feel the chill. Yes, she agrees, terrified. Don't be frightened, he says, you've got to fight it. How? she asks. By reading the book, he says--give me the flashlight in the top drawer.
Julia, why did Kendrick leave like that? asks Melanie. Julia doesn't reply. You said or did something him, accuses Melanie--what was it? No, dear, says Julia, I didn't do anything, it was you. Me, what do you mean? Melanie asks. You had one of your attacks, says Julia, he saw you change. Oh, no, that can't be true, cries Melanie, distressed. I'm afraid it's true, says Julia. Lord, what did I say, what did I do? asks Melanie--did I try to hurt him? No, says Julia, but he did see your personality change.Melanie, horrified, says, poor Kendrick--what a terrible thing to happen to him--I should have told him before! We knew it was bound to happen sooner or later, says Julia. But if I'd told him, it wouldn't have come as such a shock! says Melanie. Now you understand why I've been encouraging you not to see him, says her aunt. He hasn't gone away forever, has he? asks Melanie. I think it's best if he has, says Julia. But he didn't say that, she says, he didn't say he'd never see me again--because I couldn't stand it if that happened, wails Melanie--I'm going to die if it did! You've got to face this realistically, says Julia. I love Kendrick, says Melanie, he's the only man I've ever loved, I can't let him just go like that. You can't stop him, points out Julia, it's not right for somebody with your secret--you can't love anyone. (What a terrible thing to say!) That's not true, says Melanie, I love Kendrick, I can't help myself--I'm going to go to him, face him and tell him how I feel. You can't do that, says Julia. I love him, repeats Melanie, if I'm going to lose him, I must hear it from him. That's absurd, protests Julia, it's the worst thing you could do. I don't believe that! says Melanie, I believe he'll listen to me! She runs to the door, Julia calling, come back! Julia is unable to stop her and Melanie leaves.
Carolyn comes downstairs and touches the table on which she'll be lying. She surveys the creation and asks to see her. Adam says she won't be as beautiful as she is, which bothers Carolyn--of course she will be, and Adam must think so. She demands he say that to her--judge her fairly. She forces him to say it as if he means it, and he response, "I will," as if in a wedding ceremony.
Nathan spots her earrings on the nightstand and hides one in his pocket. She calls him darling and he says to wear those earrings he likes. She asks where the other earring is, they were just there, but they can't find it. He hopes she hasn't lost it, and he tells her not to let herself get upset. She says she isn't, she's calm, but he orders her to act calmly, then tells her he fails to see any evidence of it. A dog howls, which only Millicent hears. Nathan says he doesn't hear it, is Millicent sure she isn't upset.
Dave and Burke ask to speak to David alone, so Vicki leaves the room. They gently tell him there was no coffin and David immediately becomes very upset, dismayed, adamant. There was!!!! He says he fears for his life, and thus breaks his promise to Sarah and tells them about the secret room (and another empty coffin) in the Collins mausoleum.
