If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1144 (1840) - Charles - 'Gerard MUST have made quite an impression on you the one time you met him before tonight.'

From "#1144/1145: Robservations 10/28/03: Angelique, the Hunted"
Dawson suggests to Valerie, Gerard must have made quite an impression on you the first time you met him before tonight.  I'm sorry, she giggles, I have been going on about him, haven't I?--shall we talk about you now?  I would much prefer to talk about you, says Dawson.  Barnabas rushes in--Valerie, he says, I must speak with you immediately.  She introduces Barn to Mr. Dawson and tells the latter, my husband does seem to be concerned about something--will you excuse us?

The Robservations changes one word but otherwise gets the quote perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Judard - 'But he is a Collins. And therefore MUST he pay for it') was back on December 22nd.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1220 (1841PT) - Flora - 'Julia, we MUST decide on a gift. Something from the family.'

From "#1220/1221: Robservations 12/23/03: Morgan's Sacrifice"
Morgan informs the startled Flora and Julia of Bramwell and Daphne's wedding.  He's annoyed when the ladies discuss sending a wedding present to the newlyweds.  This family is not obligated to Bramwell, says Morgan.  Bramwell is a Collins, Julia reminds him, and when a Collins marries, it's customary to send a gift.  We have more important worries than wedding gifts, he says.  Morgan, it's simply a gesture, we are not going to dwell on it, we're just going to do it, says Flora.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly but it does reference its circumstances...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Catherine - 'No, Bramwell, you can't stop me that way, or any other way. You MUST have faith in me') was back on January 21st of 2022.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #91 (1966) - Vicki - 'Well, don't you see? She and I look so much alike, so there MUST be some sort of a connection.'

From "#0091/0092: Robservations 07/25/01: Garnering A Boyfriend"
Vicki has gotten Sam on the phone, and asks if he remembers the portrait of the girl who looks so much like her--would you happen to know her name--uh huh--would you happen to know if that's a nickname or a...good...no, that's all I wanted to know--thank you very much--goodbye. She hangs up and excitedly tells Carolyn, I was right--her name is Betty Hanscomb. And you think that's the same name that's on the ledger sheet? Asks Carolyn. It has to be, says Vicki--how many B. Hanscomb's can there be in Collinsport? What does that prove? Asks Carolyn. Don't you see? asks Vicki, sitting beside her on the sofa--she and I look so much alike, there must be some connection. You mean you think she might be your mother?--is that what you're trying to tell me? asks Carolyn. I don't know, admits Vicki, all I do know is there is a possibility that I have or did have some family here in Collinsport. Wouldn't that be wonderful? asks Carolyn. Yes, it would, says Vicki.

The Robservations leaves out a few words here and there but it references the quote well...

And as with Eps #88, #264, #90 and #265 earlier this month, Ep #91 is another example where Midnite serendipitously happened upon an ep that hadn't been quoted from before.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #781 (1897[-1967]) - Barnabas - 'What I need is a small amount of earth from the grave. That grave is in the basement of the Old house. It's too dangerous for me to go there, so you MUST get it for me.'

From "Robservations 1/24/03 - #780-781 - Senseless Death; Barnabas in Dutch"
You must not fail me, says Barn--I must find another coffin to rest in.  I understand, she assures him--what do you need?  I need a small amount of earth from the grave in the basement of the Old House, he says--it's too dangerous for me to go there, so you must go for me.  She's set to leave immediately, but he warns her, Edward is guarding the house, and if he sees your there, you won't be able to explain yourself.  How can I do it, then? she asks.  I'm going to tell you another way to get into the Old House, promises Barnabas, and Edward will never know you've been there.

The Robservations paraphrases parts of the quote but does get the main points across...

And yes, the two examples of using "must" previous to the quote in the excerpt do indeed take place in the scene and may show up in the slideshow at some point.

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Edward - 'We MUST go to the Old House now and do what MUST be done') was back on October 7th.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #412 (1796) - Vicki - 'No, you MUSTN'T. That book will be misunderstood in a court.'

From "#0411/0412: Robservations 03/25/02: Barnabas Rises--and Kills"
Josette calls the Collins history a book of sorcery--Barnabas said he knew the identity of the witch, but didn't say who. Vicki denies being a witch, but Josette says the book has convinced her, and she wants to use it as evidence against her in when her trial begins. Vicki desperately points out that Barnabas was going to help her, so why would she do such a thing, but Josette doesn't listen--she's going to testify against her  and make sure she's punished for taking away the one person she most cared about. And if the book is right, and she is going to die by her own hand, she'll make sure Miss Winters hangs first!
Josette leaves

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote but it does mention the circumstances that lead up to it being delivered...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Josette - 'Aunt Natalie, you MUST have imagined you saw her') was back on December 16th.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #535 (1968) - Julia - 'Barnabas, there MUST be some reason that this dream was different from all the others.'

From "Robservations 6/24/02 - #534/535 - The Point of Return?"
She asks if he's all right. He tells her he had the dream, but nothing happened. Both are puzzled. Wonderingly, he says it happened just as Vicki described it--I came through the door and into the room, and was waiting for the end to come-and it never did!-did you jar me awake? No, I just watched you sleep, she replies. He is jubilant, but Julia wonders why this dream is different from the others. Exultant, he says I've won-I wasn't meant to survive the dream, but I did, and now I'm free of Angelique! Julia is wary--how can you be so sure? Something went wrong with the dream curse, guesses Barnabas. Julia protests this seems too easy. Barnabas is sure it's all over now, and orders Julia to go get Willie from the basement. Julia wants them to go down there together, she doesn't want him alone, but Barnabas says nonsense--go get him. (oh, we just KNOW this is bad!)

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly but it does include how and why it comes up...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Barnabas - 'Willie will bring a wooden stake and a hammer, and you MUST drive that stake through my heart') was back on July 31st of 2020.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #782 (1897) - Gregory - 'Yes, the Collins name MUST be protected.'

From "Robservations 1/27/03 - #782-783 - Trapped!"
Edward says the coffin hasn't been touched.  Then we know Barnabas didn't spend the day there, says Trask.  Yes, says Edward, and that's all we know--I have a feeling he's outsmarted us, I don't know how, but it's obvious his powers are more formidable than we thought.
Trask assures him Barnabas' days are numbered.  What concerns me most right now is the possibility that someone else might learn this dreadful secret, says Edward, ruining my family's reputation.  Trask agrees the Collins name must be protected.  Edward remarks, it will be dark in another hour--another opportunity to get him

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Charity - 'But you MUST NOT stay here long. You MUST make other plans') was back on October 27th.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1020 (1970PT[-1967]) - John Karlen Voiceover - 'Parallel Time on the great estate of Collinwood. On this night, a dead woman finds a plot to separate her husband and a wife interrupted-- where she feels herself getting colder and colder and she knows she MUST steal all the warmth from another's body if she is to evade the eternity of the tomb.'

This time the slideshow goes where it's only gone four times before: using an opening voiceover. Although, unlike in the other instances, it isn't the only place in the ep where "must" is used, but it is the only place in the ep that was left to feature in the slideshow. And no doubt you're asking yourself what kind of graphic was this to choose for the slideshow:

Well, as has been the case in the past, the graphic was chosen from the exact moment when  "must" comes up in the voiceover. Unfortunately, what was on screen wasn't particularly interesting because it was at the outset of a shot of a panel in the foyer's stained glass window going from out of focus to in focus:

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Barnabas - 'The lust. The lust. I MUST find someone to make me stop thinking of Maggie. I MUST find someone tonight!') was back on May 9th of 2021, and the second (Will - 'Oh I don't know him actually. I ran into him once. Tall, dark, wild man. Described him to Quentin, Quentin said that MUST be who it is') was back on January 8th of 2022.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #536 (1968) - Julia - 'Yes, we can, Willie. We can, because we MUST.'

From "Robservations 6/25/02 - #536/537 - Separate Sets of Mourners"
Julia rocks back and forth as Willie brings her the stake and hammer. She asks for them, not really wanting the instruments of her loved one's destruction. She sets the stake against Barnabas' heart, but can't go through with hitting it with the hammer. She gazes at them, drops them, steps away from Barnabas, shaking her head. "I cannot do it," she cries, and Willie grabs her shoulders with joy, pressing his head against her shoulder. They both know. . .she thanks him. She can't do it! He'll turn into a vampire, Willie reminds her--should they get his coffin set up in the basement or secret room? Willie reminisces about discovering Barnabas in the tomb-he never should have taken him out of there, he knows it now. (an understatement!) They can't put him back there; too many know about that place, says Julia, including Angelique. Julia tells Willie she promised Barnabas he'd never live as a vampire, and she'll keep that promise-they'll bury him in the woods. He's dead, they must face it. She orders him to dig the grave. They can't do it alone, protests Willie, but Julia says they can because they must.

The Robservations paraphrases the quote, though gets the main points across...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Prof. Stokes - 'Because I'm not yet ready to give up my intuition that more is happening tonight than is happening here, and more will happen yet. We MUST wait, Miss Stoddard, a few moments longer') was back on December 29th.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #783 (1897) - Charity - 'But you MUST not stay here too long. You MUST make other plans-- find a permanent hiding place, and then take me there with you. I want to be with you. Oh Barnabas, that is what I want.'

From "Robservations 1/27/03 - #782-783 - Trapped!"
Go to the window and remove the cross, and then I will appear to you, he promises.  Looking very pleased at this prospect, she takes down the cross and puts it away in her dresser drawer.  Barnabas appears.  She's very relieved--I thought about you all day, she says--there was so little time before the dawn, I was afraid...I didn't know if you have found safety or perished.  "I am safe now," he says smiling, "thanks to you."  "I have pleased you?" she asks.  "Very much," he responds.  It's too dangerous for you to come back here, says Charity.  Your father believed it would be impossible for me to come back here, says Barnabas, but he's underestimated my powers.  Charity looks puzzled--you must not stay long, she warns Barnabas--you must make other plans, find a permanent hiding place, and then take me there with you--I want to be with you, she says, "Oh, Barnabas, that is what I want."

The Robservations doesn't directly quote the entire quote, but what it doesn't is almost perfectly represented...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Magda - 'No, but there will be tomorrow. I told him we MUST wait until the full moon starts to rise before we use this') was back on October 31st.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1145 (1840[-1967]) - Lamar - 'I've come to warn you. You MUST leave Collinwood tonight.'

From "#1144/1145: Robservations 10/28/03: Angelique, the Hunted"
Samantha answers a knock at the door.  It's Trask, apologizing for coming so late, but I've come on a matter of the utmost importance.  What is it? Samantha asks.  I've come to warn you, he says--you must leave Collinwood tonight!

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Samantha - 'I quite agree-- something MUST be done') was back on February 20th of 2024.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #784 (1897) - Evan - 'I MUST say that I am, uh, fascinated with having someone like you under my control. I'm sure you know much that I want to know.'

From "Robservations 1/28/03 - #784-785  - A Sudden Marriage; Magda Takes a Desperate Chance"
The cock crows.  You're quite right, Evan tells Barnabas, you have very little time and there is much I want to know--should I lower the cross, so we can look at each other?  Evan does so.  Barnabas turns and says, I don't trust you.  Evan agrees--I'm not to be trusted--but I'm not going to kill you now.  Later, says Barnabas, of course.  Depends, says Evan.  I don't want to be at your mercy, says Barnabas.  Evan grins, big, enjoying himself--you have no choice, he tells the vampire, You're at my mercy as long as I wish it to be so--I find you fascinating to have under my control, and feel you knows much I would wish to know.  "So I am to be impaled by a pin and put under a microscope," says Barnabas.  "No, Mr. Hanley."  You'll enjoy it eventually, maintains Evan--you've forgotten the pleasures of confession.  I never knew them, insists Barn, and don't plan to start now.  The question is academic, says Evan.

Again a Robservations paraphrases a quote, though it manages to get the main points across...

And Evan's quote is another "I MUST say," so that makes 30.

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Gregory - 'But at least now, Judith, at least now you know the real reason I MUST LEAVE Collinsport') was back on January 29th of 2021, and the second (Gregory - 'We MUST do something about this room. It has a certain frivolous air') was back on April 4th of 2022.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #6 (-1966: Ep #22) - Carolyn - 'I can't believe you're sitting around taking this seriously. You MUST all be crazy.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE SIX:
DRAWING ROOM: The party guests have left. Maggie
has brought out a ouija board. Roger, Elizabeth, Joe, Carolyn,
Julia and George Patterson watch with interest as Maggie ex-
plains the workings of the ouija board. Barnabas joins them as
Maggie and Roger begin working the board. Roger's question:
"Will the State of Maine ever secede from the Union and name
Collinsport as its capitol?" The board gives a decisive "No."
Roger is mock-crushed. Maggie suggests someone ask a "real
question". Sheriff Patterson asks if the person responsible for
the "troubles" in Collinsport is still around. Julia gives Bar-
nabas a nervous look. Elizabeth is disturbed that he's bringing
up these memories. Barnabas and Carolyn trade glances. Mag-
gie closes her eyes. The board answers "Yes". Elizabeth accuses
Roger of moving the planchette. Patterson: "Is it someone we
know?" The planchette doesn't move. Roger suggests they ask
it for a name. Patterson, "What letter does the killer's name
begin with?" The planchette moves around and finally chooses
"C". Roger observes, "There are a lot of 'C's' in the room. I
wonder if it means a first name, or last?" Patterson asks if "C"
stands for a last name. It answers yes. Roger, "I have an alibi."
Elizabeth warns them to stop, but Roger refuses, calling the
suspense "excruciating". Roger offers: "O great mystical board,
answer this next question: Which letter does the first name
begin with?" The planchette moves, circling around the board.
Barnabas glances at Carolyn. Julia notices the interchange be-
tween them. Carolyn suddenly hurls herself at the board,
knocking it to the ground, shouting this is all stupid. Elizabeth
takes her to task for her "wild behavior". Carolyn flares
they're all crazy and storms out. Roger comments, "Sorry,
George, you almost had your killer," declares the party over
and leaves. Barnabas and Julia trade glares.

And the summary doesn't directly reference the quote but certainly conveys the circumstances under which it occurs...

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release does -

- also like the VHS release, it has the correct aspect ratio, plus it even tends to show a bit more of the frame and it's clearer than the VHS.

And even though the MGM DVD release, like the TGG Direct release, tends to be clearer than the VHS, frustratingly, the aspect ratio is cropped from 4X3 to 16X9 -

And just a reminder, we've seen notations like "DS 1991 Ep #6 (-1966: Ep #22)" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from 1966's Ep #22 but that ep doesn't have any "must" lines to quote from. So, with that in mind, it means that Ep #22 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #13, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #141, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #223, #478, #659, #667, #690, #904 and #1008 as ones without any "must" lines.

(And unlike in my other months, I've been so busy with other stuff that I haven't already picked out all the eps for February, so at this point I have no idea just how many eps will be coming up without "must" lines. Though I do know that there will be at least two...)

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #143 (1967) - Liz - 'Well, I MUST say I agree with her.'

From "#0142/0143: Robservations 08/28/01: Through a Painting Darkly"
These recurring nightmares David is having are starting to worry me, Liz tells Vicki down in the drawing room. Liz sits at the desk. I can't imagine what causes them, says Liz. I can't, either, agrees Vicki. Having that frightening picture in his room doesn't help--why did you give it to him, you must have known it would upset him, says Liz. I'm not sure why I gave it to him, says Vicki, some kind of an impulse--he was so insistent about having it--he seemed to want it so much. Has Mrs. Collins seen it? asks Liz. Yes, says Vicki. What did she say? asks Liz. She was mystified by it, says Vicki, when I showed it to her, she seemed very frightened--she was very insistent that it shouldn't hang in David's room. I must say I agree with her, says Liz.

The Robservations references the quote almost perfectly...

And now with Liz' "I MUST say" quote there are 31.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #235 (1967) - Dr. Woodard - 'Don't let her talk too much. She MUSTN'T waste her strength.'

From "#0235/0236: Robservations 11/6/01:"
Maggie, in the hospital now, sleeps, an IV in her arm. Dr. Woodard says her heartbeat is stronger, her color better. An anxious Joe shows up. Maggie awakens, and they explain to her that she's in the hospital. Maggie is glad Joe and Sam are both with her, but when she starts describing what happened, she grows agitated and says she doesn't want to remember her terrible nightmare.

This Robservations is another that comes up during the period where there's little detail - it doesn't reference the quote at all. However, after Maggie says that she glad Joe and Sam are both there, Sam responds by giving a nervous laugh and saying, "Of course we're here, darling. And we're gonna to stay right here with you." He then turns to Dr. Woodard and asks, "Dave, would it be all right if we spoke to her for a few minutes?" Dr. Woodard replies, "Yeah, but just for a few minutes," and he follows that by delivering the quote. Sam agrees with an "All right," and Dr. Woodard leaves the room. Then Sam gently asks Maggie if she can calmly and quietly explain what happened. Maggie starts to remember that Vicki was there but then she had a terrible dream. And after that point is when she becomes quite agitated...
