Maggie asks who he was doing all this talking to--Burke? No, not Burke. Distractedly, Sam says, "I like Burke...I like him very much, I hope that he likes me. Magda is chaining Quentin to a sturdy wooden post in his room, locking everything up.  I will stay with you, watch over you, she promises--and I have my pentagram.  All right, says Q, I said he'd go through with this, on one condition--go to my desk, in the top right hand drawer.  She hesitates.  Do it! he orders.  In the drawer, she finds a gun.  Don't just stare at it, pick it up, he says.  What do you want me to do with this? she asks.  It contains six silver bullets, says Q.  I can't escape this room, but if I get away, you are to shoot me through the heart--promise me, he says.  She shakes her head, but finally agrees to his terms.  Trask bursts in--I must speak to Quentin!  He beholds his brother in law all chained up.  "GET OUT OF HERE, TRASK!" screams Quentin.  Trask stares at him, stupefied, and refuses--I'm going to stay!  Get him out of here! Quentin commands Magda.  Trask wrests the gun away from Magda and examines the bullets.

I won't ask him why the gun is filled with silver bullets, says Trask, or why you manacled yourself--I think I'll just stay--and see the answers for myself--when the moon rises!

Livid, Joshua orders her to stay in the house and sip sherry all day, but she is not to interfere.

To hell with dignity, proclaims his wife, she's lost both her kids and has nothing but what little piece of him he allows her to share. When he threatens to lock her in her room, she informs him that she'll escape, testify and NOT COME BACK! She puts on her cloak, marches out the door and gets into the carriage while her husband shouts that she is his wife, she'd better come back, even following outside and shouting her name at the departing carriage.

He says she can believe whatever she wishes, and she tells him some nights she wakes up trembling because what's happening is scaring her so. He calls her fears unrealistic. Maybe they are, maybe they aren't, she says enigmatically.

What else? asks Barnabas--Adam might come there tonight to inquire into the progress of the experiment. Willie suggests Barnabas has another reason. Yes, he'll kill the rest of the family, one by one, responds Barn obtusely--Adam goes through with his threats.

Willie smiles, shakes his head, then laughs. Barnabas is pissed and asks why. Willie says, "Oh, Barnabas, you're talkin' about all the people except the one who concerns you the most. I mean the experiment, Vicki, Adam, the family, I know you care about all these people, but the one you don't mention much is Julia, and she's the one you need the most." Obviously, says Barnabas, I can't do the experiment myself. You just don't get it, says Willie. Barnabas demands, "Are you being profound?" (LOL, gotta laugh at his tone.) "No," says Willie, "but you're acting like some man whose secretary is missing. And I know that isn't how you feel." Barnabas turns away. Adds Willie, "I mean, Barnabas, you're more than just worried about Julia." "For a specific reason," insists Barnabas. "That's all I'm sayin'" says Willie. Barnabas fears Julia will become a vampire, so they must stop him, and insists on going out again to search. Stubbornly, Willie wants to know WHY? Confesses Barnabas, "What do you want me to admit, Willie, that I care for Julia more than I appear to? All right, I will admit it, she's been an important part of my life for so long, a very important part, and I must find her, but where could they be?" (note this rare admission!)

Asks Trask.  It seems different than before, answers Quentin.  Suddenly, the pain stops.  Quentin hasn't transformed, and he's thrilled about it.  More than a minute has passed, Quentin exults.  Trask reminds him, while many things change, the moon isn't one of them, so my watch must be wrong.  He races off.  Where are you going? demands Quentin.  He stares at his hands, which are human, not animal, and shakes his head in wonder.  The full moon has completely risen.  Trask returns to the cell, contemplating, and looks at Quentin.  "The moon HAS risen," says Q exultantly, it's written all over your face.  Trask mumbles, I don't understand it at all.  Quentin grins, huge, and closes his eyes in prayerful gratitude.  He laughs, sighs with relief.

"Trask," he says, "let me out of here!  You've gone too far!"
