If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
DS 2012: (-1966: Ep #72) - Barnabas - 'Fifteen - and no husband! You MUST put those birthing hips to good use at once, lest your womb shrivel up and die.'

From the DS 2012 script:
                                                 CUT TO;

INT. COLLINWOOD MANOR (CAROLYN'S ROOM) - DAY

Barnabas sits politely on Carolyn's frilly bed. His
great-great-great grand-niece sits beside him -- as far
away as the edge of the bed will allow.

                        CAROLYN
          I don't feel comfortable talking
          to you about this.

                        BARNABAS
I simply seek a bit advice in the
art of courting a woman of this ti
                        (almost said "time")
"Land." Of this land. After all,
who better than a woman of your
age -- what is your age, if I may?

                        CAROLYN
          Fifteen.

                        BARNABAS

Who better than a woman of fifteen
          to --
                        {stops cold)
My Lord, fifteen and no husband?
We must put those birthing hips to
good use before your womb shrivels
          and dies!

She stares him down -- are you out of your mind?

                        BARNABAS (CONT’D)
A joke, my dear -- a bit of fun!
David tells me women these days
are commoniy married as late as
          twenty; even twenty-one. You
          have time yet for dalliances.

                        CAROLYN
                        (a beat, then)
          You're weird.

                        BARNABAS
We're all a bit queer darling.
It's nothing to be ashamed of.

He whispers to her -- almost sounding like a schoolgirl:

                        BARNABAS (CONT'D)
Do you think me too...queer for a
          woman of this land?

                        CAROLYN
          You obviously mean Vicky.

                        BARNABAS
                        (imagining)
She has the most fertile birthing
          hips...

                        CAROLYN
And yes, you're way too weird.

                        BARNABAS
                        (taking it to heart)
          Do you really think so?

                        CAROLYN
Yeah. You're all stiff and proper
          and old fashioned.

                        BARNABAS
          And Victoria? She isn't...proper?

                        CAROLYN
She likes to pretend she's Disco,
          but she's a Carpenters kind've
          chick, for sure.

                        BARNABAS
I had no idea she was woodworker
          by trade.

                        CAROLYN
          The Carpenters are musicians,
          stupid.

                        BARNABAS
Ah! Music! Yes, I'm rather fond
of the music of the day.

Barnabas breaks into an achingly soft 4 capella rendition
of The Steve Miller Band's "The Joker."

                        BARNABAS (CONT'D)
          For I am a picker, I am a grinner,
          I am a lover, and I am a sinner --
Playing my music in the sun...
                        (a beat, then}
If only Shakespeare had been as
          eloquent...

                        CAROLYN
Listen -- if you want to get down
with her, you've got to change up
          your approach. You've gotta drop
          the whole, weird swinging London
thing and spend some time around
          normal people...

We MOVE TOWARD Barnabas; the sound of NIGHT WOODS
growing louder by the second...

And the excerpt is from the November 30, 2010 version of the script, which is not the exact version that was ultimately shot. As such some of the directions, descriptions and dialogue are different in the excerpt. However, the way the quote is delivered in the film is very close to the way it appears in the excerpt...

And just a reminder, we've seen notations like "DS 2012: (-1966: Ep #72)" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from 1966's Ep #72 but that ep doesn't have any "must" lines to quote from. So, with that in mind, it means Ep #72 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #13, #22, #24, #39, #47, #86, #87, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #141, #145, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #223, #242, #272, #478, #659, #667, #690, #848, #904, #960, #1008 and #1087 as ones without any "must" lines.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #11 (-1966: Ep #49) - Natalie - 'Well, if we are to protect Josette, we MUST do it in the next two nights.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE ELEVEN:
JOSETTE'S ROOM:  Josette is asleep.  Natalie fixes
a cross above Josette's bed and directs Andre to put
another in the window.  Peter joins them and asks
about the crosses. Natalie takes him into the next room
and explains about vampires.  Peter, at first skeptical,
admits Victoria believes the same thing.  Natalie insists
they must take every precaution to protect Josette.

The summary doesn't reference the quote directly but it does reference its circumstances...

And one thing that the summary doesn't mention is that when Peter arrives at Josette's room, Joshua is with him. And if the look on Joshua face at seeing the crosses could have killed, everyone in the room would have been dead.  [b003]

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release does (to be added later) -

- also like the VHS release, it has the correct aspect ratio, plus it even tends to show a bit more of the frame and it's clearer than the VHS.

And even though the MGM DVD release, like the TGG Direct release, tends to be clearer than the VHS, frustratingly, the aspect ratio is cropped from 4X3 to 16X9 -

And just a reminder, we've seen a notation similar to "DS 1991 Ep #11 (-1966: Ep #49)" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from a Vicki's Arrival-Burke's Revenge-Matthew Morgan-Introducing Josette's Ep #49 but that ep doesn't have any "must" lines to quote from. So, with that in mind, it means Ep #49 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #13, #22, #24, #39, #47, #72, #86, #87, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #141, #145, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #223, #242, #272, #478, #659, #667, #690, #848, #904, #960, #1008 and #1087 as ones without any "must" lines.

[pointing-up]  And once again it's a case that I don't currently have access to my DS 1991 VHS tapes or a video copy of Ep #11 (I do have such copies of some of the other eps), so that's why the screen capture from that scene from Ep #11 isn't currently displaying. But as soon as I get access to the tape again and can take the screen capture, it will be posted as well as a notice that it has been added...

For those who may have missed all of today's quotes because of whatever weirdness was happening again, here they are:

2020:

Ep #1218 (1841PT) - Josette - You MUST answer that as honestly as you
know how.'

2021:

Ep #555 (1968) - Nicholas - 'So you MUSTN'T be afraid to tell me the truth.'

2022:

Ep #545 (1968) - Carolyn - 'But we MUST be more careful.'

2023:

Ep #806 (1897) - Gregory - 'An evil force has aroused your spirit against
me. You MUST believe that, Minerva. You MUST believe that!'

2024:

Ep #14 (1966) - Carolyn - 'Oh, that MUST be Joe.'

2025:

DS 1991 Ep #11 (-1966: Ep #49) - Natalie - 'Well, if we are to
protect Josette, we MUST do it in the next two nights.'

And if those screen captures/quotes are still up but you're not seeing them correctly, that means you probably need to clear your browser's cache...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
hoDS: Scene #86 (-1966/67) - Barnabas - 'You MUST. ... You're as beautiful as she.'

From DC's hoDS script:
He crosses to a portrait on the other side of the room.

                              BARNABAS
                       Naomi Collins, isn't it?

                              LIZ
                       Yes. The first Barnabas's mother.

From his pocket, he takes a small velvet box.

                              BARNABAS
I so hoped there would be someone
                       like you to wear this.

       He hands it to Liz.

                              LIZ
                       Why, thank you.

                              CAROLYN
                       What is it, Mother?

        She opens it, is astonished.

                              LIZ
Look at this. Isn't it beautiful?

She holds up the necklace.  It is the same one that Naomi
        wears in the portrait.

                              CAROLYN
I've never seen anything like it.

                                                              CONTINUED

Rev. 4/14                                                                    Rve. 4/14/70

The missing jewels.  Naomi's necklace.      CU Rog
Barnabas, where did you find them.          SLOW PAN
                                                               PAST  JULIA
                             LIZ                                TO   CU
                   It's absolutely magnificent.                  PROFILE BARN

                             ROGER
Legend had it they were buried in
                   the revolutionary War and never
                   found again.

                             BARNABAS
Legend is so much more romantic than
reality.  Naomi gave them to my ancestor when
he left Collinwood.  They were his share of the
                   estate.

                             CAROLYN
Mother, you must wear them .

                             ROGER
I remember reading she gave him the
                   Old House too.

                             BARNABAS
I'm so looking forward to seeing it.
The first Barnabas wrote a fascinating
memoir about his life there.  I've always
dreamed of living in that house.

                             LIZ
It's in shocking condition we've not kept
                   it up, I'm afraid.

                             ROGER
With work, it could be made livable again.
Why don't we take you through it?

Carolyn has fastened the necklace around Liz's neck.  She looks down at it.

                             LIZ
I don't really know how I can accept this.

                             BARNABAS
(As he takes her hand Carolyn sees the ring)
You must.  You are as beautiful as she.

And while the script has "You are as," what Barnabas actually says in the film is "You're as"...

And another bit of business is that I used a screen capture from the VHS -

- so that it would be in keeping with the dimensions of the screen captures from the original show, but this is what the Blu-ray looks like -

And apparently there was, or perhaps still is an alternate 4X3 print of hoDS that, unlike the VHS, shows more of the frame at the top but less on the sides and bottom, and it was shown as the July 14, 1985 installment of Elvira's Movie Macabre. So, I'm adding a screen capture from it of Scene 86 to this post:

And just a reminder, we've seen a notation similar to "hoDS: Scene #86 (-1966/67)" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from a The Return of Laura ep, but there aren't any more eps from that period that haven't been quoted from, so an alternate version of DS is being used instead. In this case that alternate version is hoDS and a quote from its Scene 86 is being used.

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #280 (1967) - Liz - 'So MUST I. Roger, you're being absurd.'

From "#0279/0280: Robservations 12/11/01: Barnabas' Swinging Party"
The chapel bell rings 11 PM, Liz feels a phantom hand touch her shoulder, the candles flicker and Roger suggests the presence of a ghost--and says, "Let's have a seance!" Barnabas protests, Roger persists, even accusing Barn of being afraid. Liz advises Barnabas to go along, because Roger will not let up.

The Robservations falls in the period where there's little detail and, thus, the quote isn't directly referenced, but the circumstances are as Liz' quote is a direct response to Barnabas' protest...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #424 (1796) - Millicent - 'Don't you understand? If Suki was married, then I MUST write another letter to her husband --'

From "#0423/0424: Robservations 04/02/02: Au Revoir, Suki!"
Collinwood drawing room - Millicent shows Nathan a box filled with papers she found amongst Suki's belongings and tells him of her plans for them.  He stops her search through the box, hesitates, then makes up an address for Suki's aunt--#7 Franklin Lane.  She writes that down using a quill pen, and over his protests, continues looking through the box, where she finds a wedding license.  I didn't know Suki was married! Says Millicent.  Nathan tries to take the certificate out of her hand.  If Suki was married, Ill have to write another letter! Insists Millicent.
Then Millicent reads the marriage license in its entirety;

The Robservations falls in the period where there's little detail and the quote is paraphrased (without using "must" - SHAMEFUL), but the circumstances are covered...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #560 (1968) - Barnabas - 'Willie. You know you MUST do what you're told. Now, there's no way out for you.'

From "Robservations 7/15/02 - #560/561 - Ang Seduces Her New Victim"
Now, says Julia, we must go ahead with the experiment. Barn informs Willie he must help with the unpleasant chore of collecting the dead bodies they'll need. Willie backs away, he doesn't want to hear more. Barnabas sternly tells him he will do as he's told. That's grave-robbing protests Willie. Yes, says Barnabas, vile as it is, it's necessary. Willie refuses, not for anyone, he won't do it. Barnabas tells him he will, he must do as he's told. There is no way out. Willie asks if he's threatening to send him back to Windcliff, and Barnabas says yes, and this time, Julia will ensure it's a permanent stay. Julia agrees to this, looking like she doesn't like saying it.

The first two indication of using "must" do indeed appear in the scene and could certainly appear in some future installment of the slideshow. As for the quote, it appears in the except somewhat differently than it's actually used, but at least it does appear...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1214 (1841PT[-1968/69]) - Catherine - 'If we're going through this kind of torture down here, think what it MUST be like for him.'

From "#1214/1215: Robservations 12/18/03: Not Gabriel!"
He rises--I should never have involved you, married you, he says.  Don't say that, she insists, going to him--that's not true--I'm here with you, sharing everything with you--helping you if I can--oh, darling, hold me, let me hold you.  They hug frantically.  We'll never be separated, at least we know that, she says--not ever, ever!  He looks into her eyes--I love you so very very much,he says--they kiss.  She walks away from him and looks toward the stairs--poor Gabriel, she says--Morgan, what's going on in that room?--if we're going through this kind of torture down here, think what it mist be like for him!--do you suppose we'll ever know?  Only when we enter the room--after this interminable evening, says   Morgan--and God knows what we're going to find.  Catherine bows her head.

The Robservations excerpt, except for a typo, gets the quote perfectly...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Nancy Barrett Voiceover - 'An unbearable time of waiting for the family at Collinwood. The lottery has taken place and Gabriel MUST spend the night in a locked room that has brought death or madness to those of the family who have entered it. If he survives this evening and retains his sanity, the curse which has afflicted the Collins family for many generations will be lifted. Now, Julia and Morgan, who locked Gabriel in the room, are waiting by the doors for sounds from within, sounds of life or death') was back on May 22nd of 2024, and the second (Melanie - 'Cousin Josette, why did you come here tonight? It MUST be terribly late, and was I very ill?') was back on June 24th.

And just a reminder, we've seen a notation similar to "Ep #1214 (1841PT[-1968/69])" before and in that case it meant that the quote should have come from an 1968/69 ep, but because there are no longer any 1968/69 eps that haven't been quoted from, an alternate version of DS is being used instead. In this case that alternate version is the 1841PT storyline and a quote from its Ep #1214 is being used.

Ep #812 (1897) - Tim - 'Someone MUST have seen us. Someone wants what I have.'

From "Robservations 2/14/03 - #811-812 - Miss Harris Inflames Trask's Loins"
Tim and Amanda enter and survey the mess.  Go to your room, Tim orders her--make sure the box is all right.  He checks his cash stash, which appears intact.  She brings Tim the box--undisturbed.  Obviously they didn't have time to get to your room, he states.  What's in the box? She asks.  Never mind, we shouldn't have gone out, he barks back--someone saw us, someone who wants what I have, they will be back again, but they'll be disappointed,

The Robservations doesn't present today's quote as actually delivered, but the paraphrasing is very close...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #940 (1970) - Quentin - 'Well, there MUST be some way of stopping it.'

From "Robservations 5/15/03 - #940-941 - Carolyn Whisked Away; Maggie in Danger"
Old House - Julia, I find all this hard to believe, says Quentin--the children who appeared at the antique store were all different ages, and yet they showed up only a few weeks apart? Don't try to understand, just to believe, advises Julia--those children were all one and the same--he's grown up now, and his name is Jeb Hawkes. No human being can grow from infancy to manhood in a few weeks, says Quentin. That's true, she says, but it's not human--when Barnabas first came back from the past, he brought a box with him, a carved wooden box--once, when I was alone in this room, I heard breathing inside it
--I never saw the contents, but Barnabas told me it contained an essence of something not human, something formless and terrifying, capable of growing at an alarming rate and of taking human form. What do these creatures want? asks Quentin, and why did they take over Barnabas when he was in the past? Julia explains--they're descended from creatures who lived on earth before the time of man--they're incredibly evil, and their aim is to become dominant on the earth again--the young man, who lives upstairs at the antique shop, is planning to marry Carolyn Stoddard--it's frightening, isn't it? There must be some way of stopping him, says Quentin. That's what Barnabas is trying to do this afternoon, says Julia.

For some strange reason, the Robservations changes "it" to "him," but at least basically the same idea comes across...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding today's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #840 (1897[-1970PT: Ep #1033]) - Petofi - 'But I have a sentence upon me, Dr. Hoffman. I have enemies. Enemies I cannot fight. Enemies I MUST escape. How did you transcend time?'

From "Robservations 3/6/03 - 840-841 - Petofi Sics Aristede on Julia"
Abandoned mill - Petofi restores Julia's voice--you can speak now, he says.  She shakes her head, remaining silent.  "A woman who won't talk?" asks Petofi--perhaps you would like a further demonstration of my powers?--I knows how difficult it is to convince a stranger of my determination, but I have a sentence upon me, enemies I cannot fight, that I must escape--how did you transcend time?--how did Barnabas Collins?--what is the method you used?

The Robservations paraphrases the quote but gets the main points across...

And this is the second quote from this ep. The first (Petofi - 'I dislike using force on such short acquaintance, but if I MUST, I will') was back on February 26th of 2023.

And just a reminder, we've seen a notation similar to "Ep #840 (1897[-1970PT: Ep #1033])" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from 1970PT's Ep #1033 but that ep doesn't have any "must" lines to quote from. So, with that in mind, it means Ep #1033 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #13, #22, #24, #39, #47, #49, #72, #86, #87, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #141, #145, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #223, #242, #272, #478, #659, #667, #690, #848, #904, #960, #1008 and #1087 as ones without any "must" lines.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #1161 (1840) - Samantha - 'I MUST keep him away from Tad.'

From "#1161/1162: Robservations 11/10/03: Another Witchly Death"
Samantha's room - She twists a handkerchief between her two hands--Desmond, she asks, how did Daniel dare to make out that will?--if Quentin is proven innocent--IF!  I have great hopes of Quentin being proven innocent, declares Desmond.  I do not, she says.  The evidence against Quentin is purely circumstantial, he says.  What of the witchcraft? demands Samantha, of the fear of the people in the village--Lamar Trask--Mordecai Grimes?--once they give testimony, do you think Quentin is going to be released?
This is a murder trial, says Desmond--Quentin isn't being tried for witchcraft--please let us work together in hopes of freeing Quentin, then the money will be yours and his.  Will my life be changed then? she asks bitterly--what do I do then, until that unlikely day?  I admit, the situation with Gerard in this house is difficult, says Desmond.  An understatement, pronounces Sam.  You loved him once enough to want to marry him, Desmond reminds her.  I didn't know him, she says, still twisting the handkerchief--he wants to be Quentin, he wants everything that Quentin has, and that includes me--that's quite an admission for a woman, isn't it, Desmond?--not even to be wanted for yourself--and now this monster wants to take charge of my child--I won't have it, I won't!--he's going to ask us to leave this house, and I know we won't--and then my child's life is in danger!--I must keep him away from Tad--please help me, Desmond, please!  Tad is in no danger as long as Quentin is alive, says Desmond.

The Robservations references the quote perfectly...

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #772 (1897[-1841PT]) - Carl - 'Then it MUST'VE been Dirk. He MUST have come here and forced her to go with him. Oh, if he's done anything to hurt her.'

From "Robservations 1/17/03 - #772-773 - Minerva, Queen of Spades"
Barnabas quietly says, I understand you're upset, but you know Pansy isn't here.  You sound so sincere, as if you know where Pansy is, remarks Carl, and aren't telling me.  Carl, says Barnabas soothingly--why would I lie to you?--why would I keep her a prisoner?  I don't know, says Carl, but she couldn't just have disappeared--did I imagine her singing the song?  It would be understandable if he did, says Barnabas quietly (who seems to be dealing with Carl much the same way he dealt with Jenny).  Am I going crazy? asks Carl--I searched the cottage, went to Collinsport and the school--Pansy is just missing.  As is Dirk, says Barnabas.
I think Dirk came to the Old House and forced Pansy to go with him! suggests Carl--if he's done anything to hurt her. . .

Again, the Robservations paraphrases the quote but gets the main points across...

And this is the third quote from this ep. The first (Tim - 'It MUST happen tonight') was back on August 30th of 2024, and the second (Carl - 'Oh yes, you see when Judith ran away, Pansy MUST have realized that Judith didn't like her') was back on September 25th of 2024.

And just a reminder, we've seen a notation similar to "Ep #772 (1897[-1841PT])" before and in that case it meant that the quote should have come from an 1841PT ep, but because there are no longer any 1841PT eps that haven't been quoted from, an alternate version of DS is being used instead. In this case that alternate version is the 1897 storyline and a quote from its Ep #772 is being used.

[spoiler]Today's quote:
Ep #847 (1897) - Julia - 'I MUST speak to you at once.'

From "Robservations 3/11/03 - #846/847 - Charity's Deed Spreads to All"
Quentin answers a knock at the door--Julia.  You're taking a big chance coming here, he warns.  I know, she says, I won't stay long.  He quickly ushers her into the drawing room and closes and locks the doors.  Have you heard the news about Barnabas? she asks.  Yes, he says.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all. However, it comes up as soon as Quentin opens the door and before he warns that Julia is taking a big chance...
