If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding August 14th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]August 14th's quote:
Ep #166 (1967) - Burke - 'Poor Carolyn. It MUST be tough to wake up and discover you're not the belle of the ball anymore.'

From "#0166/0167: Robservations 09/17/01: Sam Off the Wagon; David Home at Last"
Burke enters and asks Joe if he can join him. Help yourself, says Joe. I've been meaning to talk to you, says Burke--it's about time we declared a truce. Suits me, says Joe. I've got enough enemies in this town without adding to them, says Burke. I'm no enemy of yours, says Joe, the object of our defection is no longer of any interest to me, she's all yours. Isn't that a coincidence, says Burke, I was just about to tell you the same thing. Is that how it is, says Joe. Poor Carolyn, says Burke, must be tough to wake up and discover you're not the belle of the ball anymore. The trouble is, says Joe, she always wanted the things she just couldn't get. Being Mrs. Stoddard's daughter, says Burke, there wasn't much that came under that heading. Joe agrees. Yeah, she was spoiled, he says, it's a shame, too, because she could be a nice girl.

The Robservations references the almost quote perfectly...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding August 15th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]August 15th's quote:
Ep #1224 (1841PT[-1967: Ep #272]) - Jamorg - 'I MUST have time. I MUST know, he buried her here someplace.'

From "#1224/1225: Robservations 12/29/03: Kendrick Demands Answers"
Morgan returns to the darkened cottage and knocks something over.  Carrie, adorable in her little blue nightgown and cap, comes out--what are you doing here? she demands.  He turns on a lamp--please don't be frightened, he says.  You don't belong here, she says.  But I do, he insists, I know this cottage much better than you do.  What do you want? she asks.  I want to turn back time, he says.  Impossible, she says.  I know, he says--this gift you possess--it helps you to sense certain things that escape ordinary circumstances.  Sometimes, she admits.  Are these rooms inhabited by a spirit, long since dead, who was brutally murdered? he asks--have you  ever heard or felt her presence?  I have never felt such a presence, says Carrie.  Her name was Sarah Forsythe, he says--she was very loyal and devoted to me and died because of it--I want to find her body.  Nothing you're saying makes sense to me, says Carrie--please go now.  Please don't put me out, he begs, I must have time--he buried her here someplace.  There's no one here except me, she objects--Mr. Collins, please...  PLEASE! he shouts, do not call me by that name.

The Robservations references most of the quote...

And as a reminder, we've seen notations like "1841PT[-1967: Ep #272]" before and in this case it means that the quote should have come from 1967's Ep #272 but that ep doesn't have any "must" lines to quote from. So, with that in mind, it means that Ep #272 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #13, #22, #24, #39, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #141, #145, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #223, #242, #263, #478, #659, #667, #690, #904, #960, #1008 and #1087 as ones without any "must" lines.

[spoiler]August 16th's quote:
Ep #419 (1796) - Mr. Mooney - 'Oh, I'm sorry, Miss, but a lady MUST be escorted by a gentle...'

From "#0419/0420: Robservations 03/29/02: Mrs. Lt. Nathan Forbes!"
At the Eagle, the 1796 version of the Blue Whale, Nathan orders bartender Mooney's best rum to celebrate his engagement to Millicent.  The place is empty because of the recent attacks on local women, laments the barkeep.  A blonde walks in (and I always thought this lady was a total hoot), and we learn it's Suki Forbes, Nathan's WIFE from Baltimore! He apparently left her home eight months ago while he pursued his career, rum, and other women-and he never sent her any money, either, she complains.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote at all. However, it's delivered before we learn the woman's identity and before Nathan says she is with him and they sit down...

[spoiler]August 17th's quote:
Ep #553 (1968) - Barnabas - 'Now, listen to me. You MUST tell me where Adam is hiding. It's imperative I talk to him.'

From "Robservations 7/9/02 - #552/553 - Adam Takes Rash Action"
Carolyn is working at the desk when someone knocks at the door. It's Barnabas.  He asks if she's alone, and says he must speak to her at once. He requests that they go into the drawing room, which they do.  He closes the doors. He tells her she must reveal Adam's hiding place, but she insists she doesn't know. Barnabas says he didn't believe her before or now, but now is different--Vicki's life may be in danger--she disappeared after visiting the Old House, and he and Jeff searched the woods and couldn't find her. Barnabas is certain Adam had something to do with it, Adam came to visit him earlier, too. Carolyn starts to say that's impossible, but stops, and he gazes at her, commenting that she seems upset by what he told her. She says she's surprised, she had no idea Adam was anywhere near Collinwood. Barnabas insists she and Stokes have known of Adam's whereabouts all along, and that Carolyn has been protecting him.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote directly but does reference its circumstances...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding August 18th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]August 18th's quote:
DS 1991 Ep #5 (-1968/69) - Julia - 'You've already seen the danger in rushing this process. We MUST proceed with moderation.'

From SHADOWS IN THE '90s: The Dark Shadows Concordance 1991 - PLOT SUMMARIES - EPISODE FIVE
OLD HOUSE: Julia finishes an injection and asks
Barnabas if he feels anything.  "Only the joy of knowing
that soon the old Barnabas Collins will fade into
oblivion while the new one takes his place."  Julia com-
ments she wishes all her patients were as optimistic as
he.  He demands to know how much longer it will take.
She reminds him he's already seen the danger of rush-
ing the process - moderation is important.  He's con-
temptuous of moderation - "What a dull way to plod through
life.  Do you remember, Julia, when you told me what it would
be like - to feel life coursing through my body, to rekindle
emotions that have long laid dead within me. I want those
things!  I want them all!  I want to be alive!  I want to grow old -
and when the time comes, I want to die..."

The summary doesn't reference the quote directly but it does reference its circumstances...

And as I've done previously when it comes to the '91 Series, I used a screen capture from the TGG Direct DVD release that's the same dimensions as the ones from the original series -

- because even though that release also doesn't have the correct color timing like the VHS release does -

- also like the VHS release, it has the correct aspect ratio, plus it even tends to show a bit more of the frame and it's clearer than the VHS.

And even though the MGM DVD release, like the TGG Direct release, tends to be clearer than the VHS, frustratingly, the aspect ratio is cropped from 4X3 to 16X9 -

And just a reminder, we've seen a notation similar to "DS 1991 Ep #5 (-1968/69)" before and in that case it meant that the quote should have come from an 1968/69 ep but because there are no longer any 1968/69 eps that haven't been quoted from, an alternate version of DS is being used instead. In this case that alternate version is the '91 DS and a quote from its Ep #5 is being used.

[spoiler]August 19th's quote:
Ep #801_802 (1897) - Magda - 'But, Quentin, Quentin, you got to be, you got to be careful. You MUSTN'T do anything foolish.'

From "Robservations 1/7/03 - #800-801/2 - Count Petofi - To Tell the Truth"
Petofi leaves. Magda laments, "Quentin, Quentin!" You stole the hand, says Quentin, and you brought him here--I should kill you for that. Don't talk such foolishness, she says, we must get that hand, he won't leave us alone if we don't. Unless we can fight him, suggests Quentin. Magda gets an idea--Evan has books that tell about Petofi, he even knows about the hand! But Evan and I aren't friends any longer, says Q--I must try to fix up our relationship. Be careful, says Magda, don't do anything foolish--promise me! He leaves without another word. Magda knows the hotheaded Q is heading for trouble.

The Robservations paraphrases the quote and doesn't use "must" - shameful!! On the other hand, it indicates the use of "must" where it was not used - the only other place in the excerpt that it's actually also used in the ep is when Quentin remarks that he must patch up his deteriorating relationship with Evan Hanley, although it doesn't actually play as it's presented...

[spoiler]August 20th's quote:
Ep #933 (1970) - Amanda - 'But we MUSTN'T forget.'

From "Robservations 5/9/03 - #932-933 - Mr. Best Has a Busy Day"
Stop! Quentin orders Amanda, who is about to touch him--I nearly lost you!  I don't understand, she says--I was told you were here, and to come to you. Weren't you told not to touch me? he asks. No, she says.  That means the test has already begun, says Q grimly. Test? she asks, confused--I thought we could be together! And we will be, Quentin promises--in the land of the living--we are not allowed to touch, he warns, no matter how much we want to, because if we do, can't take you with me--every minute we're here, we're in danger--I thought it wouldn't start until the journey out; I didn't expect it quite so soon. Amanda is frightened, uncomprehending. Of course you are, he says soothingly, but I'll be here, as close as I can, and when it's all over, I'm going to hold you so tight--"I love you!" he says.  We must not forget, she says. Quentin lights the two candles and hands one to her. She takes it carefully, avoiding his touch. Let's begin, he says, there's no point in holding back now.

The Robservations paraphrases the quote and gets its point across...

[spoiler]August 21st's quote:
Ep #1029 (1970PT) - Yaeger - 'Everything she's touched, I MUST have. Oh, I just want her so much.'

From "#1028/1029: Robservations 07/21/03: Kidnapped!"
In Maggie's room, Angelique watches as Yaeger picks up a silver beaded necklace belonging to Maggie. "This is hers," he says, fondling the necklace in his fingers, "everything she's touched I must have! Oh I just want her so much!" And you will have her, promises Angelique, holding his arm, all you need is for me to help you to make your plan work perfectly--I can arrange it so Maggie Collins leaves this house hating Quentin--and I can also arrange it so Quentin will not follow and look for her. "You want him," says Yaeger. Yes, she says eagerly, now we understand each other
--your plan is a good one, very good, all it needs is for me to give it the finishing touches. And here, Miss Stokes, Yaeger says, all I thought of you was that you're a very pretty woman. Oh, I'm more, she brags, much, much more

[spoiler]August 22nd's quote:
Ep #1093 (1970) - Carolyn - 'Oh, David, you MUST hear it.'

From "#1093/1094: Robservations 09/05/03: A Song is Sung"
Carolyn exits the room across the hall, wondering where the music is coming from. David tries to leave the playroom quietly enough so his cousin won't hear him, but she turns and catches him. David! she cries--I've been looking for you--what are you doing up here? I was looking for Hallie, he says. And why would Hallie be here? she asks, folding her arms over her chest. I don't know, says David--she likes to explore the house sometimes. She's probably the one who's playing the music, says Carolyn, let's find her. Music? asks David innocently. You must hear it, says Carolyn. I think it's a radio, he says, coming from the other wing--somebody just has a window open--anyway, why would Hallie come here to play music? I don't know, says Carolyn, but we're going to find out

[spoiler]August 23rd's quote:
Ep #1159 (1840) - Judard - 'There MUST be an explanation for it, either natural or supernatural.'

From "#1159/1160: Robservations 11/07/03: Shocking Revelation; Another Death"
Gazebo - Daphne runs and sits on a bench there, reading the letter: "You have not heeded my warning; therefore I shall protect you and watch over you. "  Gerard appears.  She tells him he shouldn't have followed her here, she would prefer to be alone.  Gerard asks her why--being alone will only make it worse--why doesn't she show him what the letter says?  Daphne hands it to him, calling it the most frightening one of all--it means Joanna is in the house.  Yes, agrees Gerard, this note implies that--there must be an explanation for it, either natural or supernatural--I wouldn't advise you breathing a word of this to anyone--if it became public knowledge, it could be used against Quentin.  Daphne looks at him for a long moment; he asks why.  She says she doesn't know, she supposes it's because he confuses her when he begins to defend Quentin, she never knows if he's really sincere or not.

From "Robservations 3/14/03 - #852/853 - Catfight: Kitty 'n' Ang/Petofi Gives Q a Ring"
Drawing room - We'll have an informal little ceremony, Angelique tells Quentin--a shame it must be so small, I'll be a beautiful bride. And I'll be a miserable, unhappy groom, snaps Quentin. Must you throw away your love on that nobody? she asks--there's so much I can do for you!  He turns away from her.

[spoiler]August 25th's quote:
Ep #596 (1968) - Eve - 'You know. You MUST! You know!'

From "Robservations 8/8/02 - #596/597 - Adam & Eve & More Problems"
Dazed, Eve says it's not her fault she can't remember. Julia asks if she remembers opening her eyes for the first time in this room, and hearing their voices. She heard voices, so far away, it was like she was watching a dream. Julia is wondering how she knows about dreams, how she can speak, know what she does? Why ask me? demands Eve--you brought me here, you tell me. Barnabas tells her she hasn't lived until now, and Eve again talks of the far away voices--it was as if she could do nothing--where did I come here from, she cries, "Tell me!" Barnabas says if she has a memory, she couldn't have lived until now. But I have, she declares, but doesn't know where or when. Upset, she accuses them of knowing--they brought her here, they know. Barnabas calls for Julia to do something, and she starts to give Eve a shot. "How could I not have lived until now?" asks Eve--she's fully grown

[spoiler]August 26th's quote:
Ep #338 (1967) - Vicki - 'You MUSTN'T feel responsible for old Caleb Collins and his crazy will.'

From "#0337/0338: Robservations 01/31/02: Kevorkian Dave Woodard"
Burke comes to Collinwood only to tell Vicki he's leaving again, for South America (let's have a funeral dirge here). They disagree about setting a wedding date, and Liz overhears Vicki giving Burke the old "David needs me" spiel. She offers them the West Wing of the house to live in so they can get married right away.
That way, Vicki can be close to David, marry Burke, yet still have privacy. Vicki is thrilled, ready to accept immediately, but Burke is far less enthused. Liz suggests they think about it.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote because it falls into the period where there's little detail. However, the way it comes up is that after having heard Vicki and Burke quarreling, Liz apologizes for them being unhappy "because of all of us," after which Vicki delivers the quote...

If you don't want to know the circumstances surrounding August 27th's entry in this slideshow, then don't read any further...

[spoiler]August 27th's quote:
NoDS: Scene #101 (-1966: Ep #87) - Strack - 'Angelique Collins, you have been condemned as a witch and you MUST die as a witch.'

This quote is a correlation with June 10th's quote(
June 10th's entry in this slideshow
), which came from NoDS' Scene 126 and the following post from "Happy 50th Anniversary, Night of Dark Shadows" explains it all:

As we know, as NoDS currently stands, what replaces Scenes 41 through 45 is an amalgam of things taken from what were originally intended to be other parts of the film and turned into a dream. The sequence is made up of Scene 126 (though audio only from some of the dialogue from that scene), Scenes 145 & 146, and Scenes 101 through 103 (though in Grayson's script part of Scene 101 was originally Scene 67 before a 3/31 rewrite - but more on that when we get to that part of the script).

One of the things that I think is most effective in the dream sequence is Strack's echoing voiceover at the dream's start. Now, we know that after the enforced marathon edit, David Selby was called in to loop a voiceover for the scene in which Quentin, Tracy, Claire and Alex try to find a way into the house after Gerard gets his comeuppance. And Darren Gross has written that John Karlen also did some looping to make things clearer, though he doesn't say what Karlen did and I've never been able to discern on my own what it might be. But I've often wondered if Thayer David was also called in to loop Strack's dream voiceover? Even apart from the echoing effect, it's different from how Strack's condemnation plays during the actual hanging:

The dream:

STRACK
Angelique Collins, you have been
condemned as a witch and you must
die as a witch. Let your soul be
returned to the pits of darkness
forevermore. For thou knowest we
do what we must for thy sake, in
thy name. Amen. Prepare yourself
for eternity, witch. Let the devil take
his own!

The hanging (edited down to being more similar to the dream voiceover):

STRACK
Angelique Collins, you have been
condemned as a witch and you must
die. But your spirit will not live after
you for your earthly remains will
hang her until your spirit returns to
the pits of darkness forevermore.
...
For thou knowest that we do what we
must for thy sake, in thy name.
Amen. Prepare yourself for eternity,
witch. Let the devil take his own!

Interestingly enough, the "Angelique Collins, you have been condemned as a witch and you must die as a witch. Let your soul be returned to the pits of darkness forevermore" part of the dream's voice over is the way it's written in the script for the hanging, but it's actually delivered as "Angelique Collins, you have been condemned as a witch and you must die. But your spirit will not live after you for your earthly remains will hang her until your spirit returns to the pits of darkness forevermore."

And unfortunately, if Darren has shown what actually plays in the 129 minute version in the place that the dream currently appears - if it is indeed the dream or some portion thereof - I'm not sure because I'm pretty certain I've never seen it if it was shown because I would remember because it's a big question I have regarding the 129 minute version...

And when it comes to Scene 126, things are actually quite different from the way they're scripted. However, the only thing that relates to the quote is that Strack delivers his lines as "Angelique Collins, you have been condemned as a witch and you must die. But your spirit will not live after you. For your earthly remains will hang here until your spirit returns to the pits of darkness forever more" rather than what's scripted. And, of course "forever more" should actually be spelled as one word: "forevermore".

And similar to what I've done in the past with NoDS and hoDS, I used a screen capture from the Laser Disc for NoDS -

- so that it would be in keeping with the dimensions of the screen captures from the original show, but this is what the Blu-ray looks like -

And Ep #87 now joins Eps #1, #5, #8, #12, #13, #22, #24, #39, #120, #124, #136, #138, #139, #141, #145, #189, #198, #210, #217, #219, #223, #242, #263, #272, #478, #659, #667, #690, #904, #960, #1008 and #1087 as ones without any "must" lines.

Ep #273 (1967) - Jason - 'For many, no price is too high for the truth. And now, gentlemen, I really MUST leave you.'

From "#0273/0274: Robservations 12/06/01: Jason Gets Careless"
Drawing room - After Jason has told Liz the entire story, Liz has Roger, Burke and Patterson come in. Paul was only stunned by that fireplace poker, says Jason, who agreed to help Paul escape for a portion of the money he was stealing. He last saw Paul 10 years ago in Hong Kong, and has no idea where he is now. Liz announces that she's dropping all charges against Jason, payback in return for the truth. Furious, Roger demands Jason be arrested; the money he took also belonged to HIM, after all. Sneering, Jason reminds them of the public scandal this revelation would cause. Liz insists she can't bear that thought, and only wants Jason to go. Burke agrees with her, and Roger grudgingly gives in.

The Robservations doesn't reference the quote because it falls into the period where there's little detail. However, it comes up after Liz says that she can't go back on her word that she's dropping charges in exchange for Jason having told her the truth...
