Current Talk '03 I / Re:Admit it Barnabas.....you love her.
« on: June 02, 2003, 10:12:55 PM »
I don't think Barnabas ever loved Angelique.  The whole point of their relationship in terms of the story was that she was a quick, easy lay who came back to haunt him in spades.

I do think his "declaration of love" in 1840 makes a weird kind of sense for the character.  He basically suffers from some sort of romantic ADHD--I have no idea what a qualified counselor would call it, but it's sort of like the more helpless and pouty the girl, the more Barnabas "loves" her.

In recent years I've come to think it would be cruel to think of Julia yoked to this befuddled boor for the remainder of her years.  I do love Connie's vision of a romantic triangle between Barnabas, Julia and Quentin a few years down the line from the end of the series.  In real life, what probably would have happened is that everyone else would have deserted poor old Barn except for Willie.  He would have stayed on, keeping the coffin hinges oiled and the bats out of the belfry.  or so I've thought.

He was the star of NoDS (Night of Dark Shadows) and played a dual role--Quentin Collins, who inherits the house in the present (1971), and Charles Collins, an adulterous painter who lives ca. 1810 and whose affair with the mysterious Angelique is the seed of the whole story.

I do vastly prefer Night of Dark Shadows of the two films.  If Darren is ever successful in his efforts to restore the missing footage, the story will actually make sense, and maybe others will realize what an unusual gem it really is.  As Grayson pointed out long ago in an interview, there was something really special there before the studio forced them to hack it to bits and pieces.

can someone please just summarize what he claimed?

We used to have seances as a result of watching DS.  We'd get creepy feelings and stop before anything could happen!  as for the Ouija board, we played with it all the time, and got lets of messages, but never any of the scarey stuff you always hear about it.

I am afraid that Satan never thought I or my family and friends was worth bothering about!   ah well...

Current Talk '03 I / Re:DS radio commercials

Patti, I live in the Boston, Mass. greater urban area.  I heard this ad in a restaurant right in Somerville's Davis Square.

I really wish I had been able to hear the whole thing.  I *think* the Sci Fi channel was mentioned, but as Raineypark mentioned, I've yet to see any advertising coverage for the show, apart from the spots for the Festival they've run in some years, and those always seem to air during the show.

Worldvision could send them the old ad spots that we used to see in days gone by. During the Eighties syndication, a spot that featured a clip from 1795 with Barn vamping Millicent was used, with a stinger and the series logo coming up (if memory serves) at the end of the clip.

Current Talk '03 I / DS radio commercials
« on: June 02, 2003, 03:45:42 PM »
I normally never listen to the radio, but last night had dinner with a friend in a restaurant where they had the box on, and tuned to an oldies station (which suited us just fine).  Anyhow, I nearly dropped my fork when a certain familiar musical refrain came on and I could hear an announcer advising listeners to tune into Dark Shadows, the famous supernatural soap opera, ever day Monday through Friday!  I couldn't hear well enough to tell whether this was an old commercial from the ABC days (back in the Sixties) or something Sci Fi paid them to run.  The thing is that they also ran a commercial for 60 minutes that sounded old, so I thought it might be something they do on the program.  I'm afraid this is all the info I can provide.

Has anyone else out there heard any radio commercials for the show lately?

Current Talk '03 I / Re:Worst Hair on DS?
« on: June 02, 2003, 03:26:04 AM »
Forgot to mention that Irene Hamalain did the hair on DS until sometime in 1970, and she did sometimes get a mention in the credits.  There are some funny pictures of her in the various PomPress books.  Darling Marie Wallace charitably described Irene as a rather "fussy" woman.

I'm blocking on the name of the gracious lady who took over after Irene left, but she came to one of Jonathan's readings in Long Island, and reminded him of that "Madison Avenue haircut" she used to give him, netting a big smile from him in response.  I think there is a photo of her on the Dee Kearney's pages in Mr. Juggins' DS FAQ site.

Thank you, MB carissimo, for those GORGEOUS Grayson captures.  Just what I needed to round off my weekend (and revisiting them will help me make it through another wretched Monday morning, I am sure).

Your swooning fan,

Hi Julia, she may have gotten caught up in the planning frenzy around the movie, which was about to go into production at this time.  Sam and Gordon wrote it and councils-of-war tended to happen at the Halls apt because it was convenient and, of course, huge.

I think she grew her hair out longer to accommodate the layered-hairpiece look they gave her for the movie, which then continued on for the show.

I'm bummed that nobody has mentioned my honey, Buzz Hackett, here.  How could you neglect that majestic mess o' leather and hairgrease?  Oh, how quickly they forget.

Buzz's mop looks as if he attempted to wash it in beer, failed to rinse properly, and then dumped half a tube of Brylcreem in it and pushed the SPIN button.

Still, he's all man, and all mine!

Vrooming away in a cloud of bikerdust,

I'm dying here... THANK YOU MB for adding the perfect dollop of sardonic humor to an otherwise wretched Friday!

I did have the show on for a bit this a.m. and got to hear Roger's tirade on the phone.  TOO delicious!

Well, I adore Sian Phillips. so that's great news.  I must confess I was a little surprised that anyone in H'wood would be adapting a Dodie Smith novel.  It is the town, after all, where they were all trying to get Jane Austen on their cell phones a few years back, and Demi Moore commented that changing the plot, characters, and ending of the Scarlet Letter did not matter because "nobody ever read that old book anyway."

I missed Daniel Deronda, boo hoo, but heard great things about it.  Is anybody else taping The Wyvern Mysteries tonight, adapted from the Sheridan LeFanu novel?  I just love Sheridan LeFanu, a writer who deserves to be remembered for more than Carmilla.

It'll take more than Bobble-heads to get this curmudgeonly Yankee to sign up for the DVD club.  I'd hoped for at least a 15 percent discount.  Instead all we are being offered is more schlock to clutter up our shelves.  Bleah.

As for the Barnabas Bobble-head, I shrieked as I was convinced I had just seen Sky Rumson as a vampire!

Or maybe it was Captain Scarlet with fangs???

I hope there are no plans for a Julia Bobble-head.  I may have to summon Hoffman to bring me the black pins!

I think the budget had a lot to do with that lack of celebrating.  The other thing was probably that they wanted what happened on the show to be in this bubble that was outside of any real time or place, despite occasional references to reality, such as people dropping in from NYC, Boston, or Augusta (or London!). Jonathan Frid mentioned in an interview once that he thought this timelessness was one of the show's strengths.  And it helped keep you from wondering why their Xmas decorations were so tawdry and cheap looking... just think of that "glamorous" gold lame bag Liz was wielding when she was thinking of shooting Julia!

I personally like it that nothing was ever celebrated on DS, but I am an odd duck, to understate things.  It just gives the show a quality that sets it apart from other TV series.

It is very sad about the weddings, though, especially Carolyn's.

Current Talk '03 I / Re:Leviathan....the beginning of the end?
« on: May 29, 2003, 07:10:13 PM »
1970 PT wins my nomination for the most uneven of all the storylines.  I thought it coupled some of the series' best moments with some real duds.  I absolutely loved what they gave Thayer, Grayson, and Louis to do.  I had mixed feelings about Lara's work on the storyline but some of it was really excellent, and darling Hannah Stokes was a hoot to watch (Paula Laurence--is that the name of the actress?).  Nancy and Johnny made a great pair, too, though their screen time was greatly diminished due to various film involvements.
For me the biggest stumbling block was Quentin and Maggie.  They were both such dreadful people, Quentin especially, but Maggie wasn't much better.  And this made Barnabas' obsession with helping them very problematic for the viewer.  There is even a scene where Julia asks Barnabas why on Earth he wants to help the PT Maggie and he gives her the usual runaround in response.  I always wonder whether that wasn't included due to fan mail asking that very question.  In those days, producers of shows actually cared what the fans thought about a given character or storyline, which is why the Leviathan story wound up being so abbreviated--because of the negative mail.
With all this said, I've watched certain weeks of PT 1970 more frequently than many other periods, just because the theatricality of the premise worked so well for the actors.  There really isn't anyone in the group for the audience to identify with though, which is problematic if you approach it as a traditional narrative.

Luciaphil, these are hysterical, as always!  I remember last time we had Leviathan you simply threw up your hands in disgust, so it's great fun to see you have a swipe at these shows.

Your comment about Mrs. Johnson having the cleaning job from Hell (literally) next day had me stifling screams!  but no heavy breathing, I assure you.

It would have made it a lot more interesting if Nicholas had decided that Jeb was a loser and set out to destroy him from the moment of his arrival on the scene.  It more than strains credulity that Nicholas attempted to salvage Jeb despite his relentlessly bratty behavior. But then, look at how long Nicholas was convinced that Adam was going to be the Father of the new Master Race.

Makes one think that Nicholas himself was not so bright as he liked people to think, doesn't it?
