Current Talk '10 II / Re: Julia's Excuses - Revisited
« on: August 03, 2010, 08:25:34 PM »
There's a scene where Julia is looking for someone, and somebody else says she's not there.  Then a third person comes out and says they've just been talking to the person Julia's looking for.  Julia turns to the first person in a wounded, upset way and asks, "Why was it necessary to lie?"  This cracked me up because of all the times Julia lied for any number of reasons.

I also love the one somebody else mentioned where Carolyn is near hysteria because Amy has disappeared and oh-dear-whatever-shall-I-tell-Mother and Julia takes her by the shoulders and practically bellows, "LIE to her!"

That's the one where Julia has to bitch-slap Joe because he is ALSO having hysterics...

I see mention here of Trilogy of Terror and wonder whether anyone ever saw Trilogy of Terror 2, in the 1990s.  Geraint Wyn Davies was in it, and there was a sequel to the infamous "Zuni Fetish Doll" episode of the original ToT.

I totally missed even the existence of this sequel production, but a friend told me about it recently and I looked it up.  Sounds potentially interesting.

Magnus, Justin was a character in the final storyline of the series.  He was only in 3 or 4 episodes.  I think they aired in February of 1971.

Oooh, that devious Miss Hoffman in today's snapshot!  Her smile truly speaks of the cat that ate the canary.

Love it! Thanks for the treat, MB.

Best,

Frid read a discussion?  Wow.

Kind of sad for the lady who paid $500 to have dinner with him, and he left after 30 minutes.

So, RD failed to show up for the thing with Pennock, or just wasn't there for the weekend?

It sounds as if the days of the charity auctions are pretty much over, unless they try coaxing the 1991 personnel to come in and contribute mementos they might have in their garages that they'd like to offload.

Vicki's reactions to people in 1795 kept reminding me of the Wizard of Oz. At the end when she was back in 1968 I wish there had been scene where she was in bed and Liz, Carolyn, Roger and Julia were clustering around and she said:"And you were there, and YOU were there and you, and you... and some of it was terrible but some of it was wonderful..."

They did have characters reacting to Ned's resemblance to Jeff, and Sebastian's resemblance to Jeb.  Poor Carolyn initially thought Sebastian was Jeb back from the dead.

I think Depp would make a great Carol Channing.  My all time favorite performance of his is as the drag queen in "Before Night Falls."  Sheer theatrical brilliance.

Wow, what a gallery.

If anyone posts Youtube video of Evan Hanley, I'd love to see it.  He's uncannily on-target as Nicholas.

Thanks again, Midnite.  One thing that David's remarks highlight for me is the intellectuality of the show which was one of the things that attracted me to it for the long term.  Even with the often absurd plots and scripts, the intellectuality of the actors and their commitment to the work brought a layered quality to all of it that was unique.  Without the seriality of each installment unwinding five days a week, I don't think it would have built up to such an extraordinary edifice (if that's the right metaphor).

From his appearance here at Harvard a couple of years ago, I would say that David is a very confident extemporaneous public speaker.  But there's so much going on in his head that he does wander from point to point and it doesn't always necessarily tie up into the neat little package one might expect in this modern world of the soundbyte.

Interesting.  I thought there was a London session with full orchestra for Jekyll and Hyde and these were the versions of the cues used in hoDS and, subsequently, in several of DC's early 1970s telefilms.

As mentioned elsewhere here, there was pamphleteering and harassment from certain "religious" groups against DS back in the 1960s.  It just wasn't given the kind of press it would be given today.  Back then, the media took the line that anyone in those churches was a kook and nobody cared.

Supposedly, Dr Joyce Brothers went on a talk show and claimed that DS promoted "alienation," whatever the hell THAT means.

It was quite a decade...

They did have some very cool photos on, or sometimes inside, the covers.

In just how many stories was "Inna-gadda-da-vida" used as an evil Satanic incantation??? Oh dear, the poor pastor in the thread above would flee shrieking in horror... could it be ... SATAN?

If your connection is fast enough to allow you to watch Youtube, that allows you to watch the DS Minisodes.  The last time I checked they were well into 1897.  I think all of 1967, 1795, and 1968 is there.  Each ep is pared down to 9 minutes or so but it does help you get your fix when you really need it.

Best wishes,
