Current Talk '24 I / Re: hoDS/NoDS DVD Release?
« on: October 12, 2010, 04:21:23 PM »
I wonder whether any Cousins out there remember Crowhaven Farm (1970), an ABC Movie of the Week starring Hope Lange, Paul Burke (from Valley of the Dolls), Cyril Delevanti (Night of the Iguana), Patricia Barry (also appeared in Boris Karloff's Thriller I believe) and the fabulous Virginia Gregg (brililiant in "Mr. George" from Thriller and also played the voice of Norman's Mother in Psycho!).  Thanks to the kindness of a friend who owns a VHS of the movie from an airing on some channel called "Plex" I got to see Crowhaven Farm again recently.  The style and presentation of the flashbacks of the Hope Lange character's past life in 17th century Brampton, Mass. strongly reminded me of Quentin's flashback experiences in NoDS.  I spotted a couple of other things that DC seems to have copied in Burnt Offerings a few years later.

It did make me wonder whether Sam and DC were watching closely when this movie aired in 1970... particularly given how fast they had to pull a fresh screenplay together when Frid turned down doing the DS feature film sequel late in '70 or early in '71 (I would guess that this came down when he walked off the set late in '70).

Very sad.  He sounds like such a creative fellow.

I hate drugs... how awful for his familly.

So, from all this I'm "speculating" that in the Depp Shadows version of the story, Barnabas pays Sam Evans to age Angelique's portrait so that she is the splitting image of Mother Angelica.  When Angelique looks at herself in the mirror, she is so horrified at what she sees that she drives to the Rockport Foundry and hurls herself inot the middle of the furnace.  In gratitude, the citizens of Collinsport sing and dance to the tune of "Ding dong the Witch-bitch is did."

As for the baboon, that's clearly a reference to an earlier storyline in Depp shadows where Julia injects Barnabas with a very large hypo which promptly turns him into a screaming, gibbering baboon.

Or am I on the wrong track here?

Current Talk '10 II / Re: Today's Robservations Slideshow
« on: September 30, 2010, 12:59:14 AM »
In tonight's new slide-show for Robservations, I love the first image for episode #69, and the first one for episode #330.  A gimlet-eyed Mrs Sarah Johnson hits the scene with a bang (did I miss her big scene in Sheriff Pat's office yesterday?) and Burke is understandably both delighted and maybe a little intimidated by this determined new ally.

The capture at the start of the four for episode 330 is a wonderful shot of Julia wearing THE coat--why on Earth she wasn't allowed to keep this one, and why they made her switch to that other nubby horror, has always mystified me.  (Of course I sometimes wonder whether Grayson simply walked home wearing this coat and conveniently forgot to bring it home--but I don't think that grey was her favorite color, judging from the candid snaps I've seen of what she wore on her way to and from the studio.)

I loved the image of Julia and Ben that figured in yesterday, or the day before's sequence from 1840. Julia looked just like a little girl at a party being told she couldn't have any ice cream when Ben was laying down the law about going anywhere near Barn's coffin.

People seem to have totally forgotten the marketing ploys around the original release of the Bela Lugosi Dracula around St Valentine's Day, 1931.  I saw some of the posters and lobby cards in a book a few months ago and the glamor and romance with which Bela's Dracula was presented leaves the Twilight stuff in the dust.

Just another day in the United States of Amnesia...

Interesting.  Do you think they're hinting at a vampire storyline?

I don't get any TV reception anymore so would appreciate an update if there is one...

Sounds cute. Hope you and everyone in LA is keeping cool in the midst of that ghastly heatwave I've been reading about!  114 degrees Fahrenheit!  Eeee-YOW!

hugs, Steve

They're both wonderful actors, and both decades too old for the roles, alas.

If I were casting it, I would try to find out what Alice Krige is up to these days for Elizabeth.  I think she's too old now for Julia and in any event I am 99 percent certain that that role is going to go to Madam Helena Bonham Carter-Burton...

Those are really nice photos, Cyrus.  I really enjoyed Roy Thinnes' work on The Norless Tapes and The Invaders (a show that fascinated me when it was on originally).

Dawn Wells is so charming.  And incredibly youthful looking!  She looks far too young to have been a TV star in 1965!

Craig was a real sweetheart, a fine gentleman, and a gifted writer.  I miss him very much.  My condolences to all who still hold him in their hearts.

Blessings,

Steve

Darling Misterioso,

I'm hardly the authority when it comes to Quentin, but my impression as re canon was that after Amanda's death, Quentin had fixated upon Daphne as his one-and-only.  After the happy ending for the 1840s Quentin and Daphne, my impression from Sam Hall's notes was that Tracy, the new Kate Jackson character, had the potential to be written as a new love interest for Quentin--either as Daphne's reincarnation or in her own right.

But then, monogamy isn't really my bag either, so what do I know?

love and tapioca pudding,

Hmmm.  I've always thought Mr Quentin Collins' one true love was none other than ... Mr Quentin Collins.

In other news... where's the kazoo button on this thing?

The positioning of their heads in this kiss seems to have been done with an eye to avoiding duelling hairdo kabuki.

It's very rare?  Harvard has the old VHS in their library.

I think this movie is better than most would say.  A Gothic plot, great dialogue, creepy camera work from Lang and Natalie Schafer--what more could one want?
