I haven't had time to go back and read Vicki's opening scenes, but her role in this version seems rather more complex than was the case in any of the other versions.  I recall a crudely written line about Vicki reading David's psychological evaluation file (I really do not see how this would have been possible, but who knows).  The implication is that Vicki isn't just there to teach David, but perhaps do some types of therapeutic work with him.  By 2004 such techniques as play therapy were well established in dealing with what in the 1960s were called "troubled children" (I have no clue what the current approved lingo for psychologically disturbed kids is).

It really does seem as if all the best lines were cut from the final edit of this piece.

Many thanks, MB, for your continuing work on this intriguing project.

I actually wrote a longish thing once called something like "I love Leviathans."  I agree that the first two months are great and the final few weeks--well, it's a wild and woolly ride, with some fabulous moments.

I know most fans hate the storyline but some claim to love every moment of 1795, much of which I find a colossal bore (basically, every time Peter Bradford was onscreen, and starting halfway through, he was in it A LOT).  My view now as an older fan is that every DS storyline has its pearls and its dross.  I love the entire series because it was so unique and it evolved in such an incredible way.

The whole thing about the "resolution" of Barnabas and Angelique's "love story" in 1840 is another controversial topic, but I'll leave that alone for now.

Welcome to the Boards!

I loved all the "present day" storylines.  The final one, Summer of 1970, had mythic status for many years in fandom because Worldvision had not released the final year episodes into syndication so everything that happened immediately after the moment when the regular cast were about to return to complete the PT 1970 storyline was known only through the notes and diary entries that fans had saved from the original broadcast in 1970-71.

The plotting in Summer of 1970 is very jerky but I still think there are some wonderful moments.  To enumerate these would involve SPOILERS but perhaps, if I think of it, I will start a "Summer of 1970" thread to list some favorite scenes.

One of my favorite moments of all from the period is when Julia confronts Sebastian at the Old House and realizes
that he's in love with Maggie.  Grayson plays it all so perfectly, has some great dialogue, and it's a lot of fun to watch Pennock playing off her in the scene.
Sam Hall's TV guide article suggests one possible plotline that could have been explored had the series done at least one final sequence in 1971.

Amazing.  I finally remembered something else from my single viewing of this cakewalk!

Roger's scenes were really heavily cut in the final edit, weren't they?  Or maybe some were simply never filmed...

Doctor and K9, the first season of PD comes to a natural conclusion, but the door is left open for a sequel.  I was actually quite pleased that writer/creator John Logan did NOT go for the wearisomely knee-jerk predictable end of season cliffhanger.

Am I mis-remembering, or was it the case that the dialogue in the scene that is starting now played in the final cut (shown at the Festival) as part of the breakfast scene?

In DRACULA, PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1965)
the Count is imprisoned in the castle moat under ice at the end of the film.  In the following film, DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE, he is released when blood from a victim trickles onto the ice and revives him.
According to Montague Summers in THE VAMPIRE: HIS KITH AND KIN (a fascinating volume), vampires cannot cross running water.  Since the castle was shown in the very first Hammer film as situated next to a babbling brook that one had to cross over a bridge, one wonders just how Dracula was ever able to leave his own home.

Very cool photo of the (un)Dead Kelly...

I'm not one for award shows but if these dumb little things may anything to anyone in the industry, Eva Green deserves some kind of extra-special one for her performance in Penny Dreadful.

Very cool.  I saw some of the first series of VIKINGS but don't recall Miss Greene.  Perhaps she appeared in series 2.

Great still (or is it a capture?).  I didn't know there was ANY photographic record of Hu's performance in the role.

I wonder if this is the only version of DS where the vampire's victim's body WASN'T "buried in the woods."

Those scenes are a riot, particularly Pfeiffer/HBC.  Thanks so much Midnite!

Those are such wonderful scenes.  I love the earrings Julia wears in the second one. Many thanks for finding these, MB.

I always find the scenes between the two women fascinating to watch.  Angelique is used to using her beauty and charm to get her way with people, and Julia isn't having any of it.  They first meet in the Spring of 1968 when Angelique has become the new Mrs. Roger Collins and is swanning around Collinwood in this big, black, heavily lacquered wig.  Julia is nice to her initially. But that changes.

The episode you mention is, I think, Julia's last episode during her appearance in the 1897 storyline.  Julia says that she's surprised to find she likes Angelique.  Their next meeting is in early 1970 as described above.

In 1840, their antagonism is initially the most sharply defined of any of their meetings.  But then later on they do work together one last time to help Barnabas.

I also very much enjoy watching Julia confronting Nicholas. All the supernatural characters on the series, from Barnabas to Count Petofi, are always impressed by the fact that their powers don't intimidate Julia.
