Welcome back, Kuanyin!

Hi Miranda,

I believe Delilah was supposed to be Euphemia's daughter.  Grayson mentions on the Grayson Gathering tape that a line where she was supposed to say "to hell with her!" in reference to Delilah was cut because it was considered bad form for a mother to say such a thing about her own daughter.

Just think of any Jerry Springer episode of the last ten years in this regard and it will tell you what a different world that was, even as "recently" as 1982...

I'll have to miss the fun.  Boringly, this is my ONLY free weekend this month to stay home and work on turning my new abode from a hell of boxes and garbage bags to something resembling human habitation.  Plus, I am so exhausted from running around doing various things that the thought of the trip alone is enough to make me SCREAM as hideously as Dr. Hoffman discovering embryo-Adam in Dr. Lang's lab!  NOOOOO-HO-HO-HOOOOOO, NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

cackling, G.

Some years ago I had the privilege of speaking to one of the women who helped run Grayson's last fan club (that I am aware of--I'm thinking of the group that published the zine Shades of Grayson).  She thought that Grayson held back from attending the Festivals because she had been in at least one mob-scene level crowd at a Frid appearance in the late Sixties and was afraid of her personal safety in the context of crazy crowd behavior.  Grayson had a number of falls and accidents in later life and may have suffered from lowered bone density (we've speculated about this but I don't believe it has ever been confirmed).  At the premiere of Happy End, she went on with her arm in a sling--pretty amazing!  She was a firm believer in "the show must go on."

In an interview with a fan done while she was appearing in the play The Suicide (opposite Derek Jacobi) in '80, he asks her if she'd like to come to a DS Festival and she playfully responds:  "Why not?  We'll go together."

There was a special dinner organized by a few fans that around fifteen people attended in 1982.  It was known as the Grayson Gathering.  Thankfully the event was tape recorded so posterity does not have to imagine Grayson telling all the witty stories and bantering away with her fans.  On that occasion, she spoke very lovingly of Jonathan Frid and called him "a dear man."  I think in '73 when the other tape to which reference has been made here, Grayson and Sam were still smarting from Frid's refusal at nearly the last minute to do the second DS feature film, necessitating a complete re-tooling of the concept for the film.  In the event, I think that NoDS was a more interesting concept--as a film--than a second Barnabas story would have been.  Heresy?  Perhaps.  But it's my opinion.  It helps of course that I think of Carlotta as one of Grayson's most fabulous roles.

cheers, G.

Her knowledge of Shadows the experts stumps
All Rise! All Hail! It's Midnite's Day!
A triumph of presents and cake for her day!

Really awful doggerel, I know, but darling, I do sincerely wish you the very best on your special day!  May it be riotously spooktacular!

I had a horrifying revelation last night, thinking about this cassette... somewhere out there on tape there is, or at least used to be, passages where Mr. Frid was impersonating Julia.

I think I would crawl over broken glass in the alleyway behind Jacque's (a notorious tranny bar in Boston patronized mostly by married men from the outer surburbs)  to hear Mr. Frid hoasely intoning: "B-B-B-Barnabas!!!!"

Claude, baby, I'm DYING here!

I can see the next C'port Players skit now:  "Friddie Dearest!"

Oh, I miss her so much, and yet, whenever I put on Satan in High Heels, or Night of the Iguana, or one of her stratospherically-megafabulous Magda episodes, it's as if she's never gone.  Her flame still burns brightly in my heart.

I love the moment in Night of DS when her character says to Selby's:  "We're rare people, you and I..."  Rarest of the rare!

Since I have a firm belief in reincarnation I love the thought of a fierce young woman with curly dark red hair, "no boobs, no bottom," raspy Bankhead basso voice and attitude that could slice titanium out terrorizing the world... off in the distance I hear her unforgettable, rollicking laughter.

Hey Markyboo, very sadly I think Steve Buscemi is now too old to play Willie.  I just saw him in a hilarious cameo bit in the new movie Paris je t'aime.

If you've never seen him in his first breakthrough role in the 1980s movie Parting glances, do try and track it down.  It's somewhat obscure but soooo stunningly good!

Gerard, it was stated in one throwaway line of dialogue that Alexis and Angelique were the *adopted* daughters of Timothy Stokes, Mad Scientist and Occultist for Hire.  Much as I adore the whole PT 1970 storyline, the thing is a graveyard of unexamined backstory.  The true parentage of the Stokes girls, Maggie and her sister, Roxanne and Claude North and how or when they became involved with Stokes, just why Stokes was so terrified of Claude... there's more, such as the whole Damion Edwards/Bruno/Trask/Angelique kerfuffle, although with the latter they do drop enough hints to enable one to realistically connect the dots.

When I refer to the Eastern and Greek communions, I write Orthodox with a capital O.

People keep floating rumors that the pilot will get some kind of commercial release.  I personally think Hell will freeze over before TPTB at Warners ever sign off on such a thing, but who knows--maybe they'll tap it for a bonus item if they decide to go for a more lavish release for the feature films.

I thought that Stokes in PT was a Ceremonial Magcian who had studied Aleister Crowley's texts, the Golden Dawn MSS., and probably done his own "unique" hands on research in the occult realm.  The Powers he invoked in that incantation could have been Elemental or something like the Guardians in Traditional Witchcraft.  Many students regard the latter as related to the Archangels of old Judaic secret teaching, or a mix of the Archangels and "the Watchers" or Nephilim (some call Them the Cloud People) who are very complex Beings about Whom various orders of Lore exist.  There are also some very clunky redactions of this lore inspired, from what I can tell, by video games and such TV shows as the recent series Hex (I think Charmed and BtVS may have incorporated some of these concepts as well).

Of course to really orthodox Christians, if you invoke anyone outside the standard theological hierarchy given to you by Church teachings, you're automatically dealing with the Devil, so all of these distinctions may well be less than academic to you, Magnus.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the good people" and "the good writing" coming and going on DS.  The way I have experienced the show, each storyline and chronological period is a patchwork of gold and dross--fabulous moments and stuff so excruciating I really can't sit through it any longer.  Up until 1840, the overriding, overwhelming influence upon the story and the show was Dan Curtis.  Things did tend to improve when he left the show alone due to being out of the country or off working on other projects, but he did have a tendency to come in and twist the writers' arms to produce some curve ball that had nothing to do with the existing continuity.  In 1840, Lela took over as producer and she was the one who made some of the decisions about how the story went that turned out to be quite controversial or flat-out implausible in the eyes of some fans.

At this point, I personally think it is a tempest in a teapot... not meaning to rain on anybody's parade, but it could be YEARS before it gets beyond publicists spinning out press releases on the project.

Just my two drachmae... I'm sure the discussion WILL continue, and I'm the first to admit that Mr. Depp has got the action.

I'll personally never be able to think of anyone else as Barnabas other than Jonathan Frid.  And I say that acknowledging that I admired Alec Newman's work in the role in the Warner Brothers network pilot that failed.
