Current Talk '03 I / Re:An Episode That I LOVE
« on: March 27, 2003, 03:06:50 AM »
Absolutely agree with you, MB, that this episode is DS at its very best! Everyone involved was in top form, including writer Sam.  Louis, Joan and Jerry all gave superb, deliciously witty performances.

I just watched the entire run of shows from about a week after the staking of Barnabas up to the week of his return, and I have to say that although Old Blood wisdom is that this was one of the least palatable months of DS (due to the putative low ratings in Barnabas' absence), I found the exact opposite to be true.  Selby gives a fabulous performance as "evil" Quentofi, Nancy Barrett shines as Pansy, and the writers seem to be having a field day with the truly "mad" storyline!  Plus, for Angelique fans, Lara Parker gets a lot to do and does it all superbly, I must say.

KLS, too, has some of her finest moments on the show after her initial work in 1966.

So what's not to like?

Gothick--DS fan since 1968!

Current Talk '03 I / Adam at 6 A.M. *now has screen caps*
« on: March 26, 2003, 07:53:24 PM »
Have been meaning to note that Grayson got a one month vacation during this period of DS (I gather that she told them that if Jonathan was getting one, she needed one as well!)  Part of the time was spent working on a little known feature film, Adam at 6 A. M.  Below I've pasted in the review of the movie I wrote for IMDB. Even though Grayson's scenes are few and far between, it's worth seeing her in action here.

The hard life of Mikey Douglas--an early chapter

This is a very early Michael (or as he was popularly known then, Mikey) Douglas vehicle. He plays a disillusioned college professor of the late Sixties (there seem to have been so many of them scurrying about in those days!) who drops out of his successful, stressful life in the big city to go in a search for his roots in a not-so-idyllic midwestern small town. The story plods along, showing his courtship of a rather status-proud Junior Miss type whose Mom (wonderfully etched by Louise Latham) is the town hairdresser, and his adventures in serious male bonding with Joe Don Baker and other flannel clad logger types. Grayson Hall has an excellent cameo role as his aunt, and gets to administer a deft put-down of Douglas' masculine vanity towards the end. In some ways the last 30 seconds is the best part of the movie. Overall not at all a bad effort. To quote Maggie Smith in a movie that is much more suitable to this writer's temperament, "For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing that they like." I did make liberal use of the fast forward button in viewing "Adam at Six A. M."

I love Suspiria just for the scene in which Joan uttered the immortal words, "I want you to get rid of that American bitch NOW!"  It sort of reminded me of Liz under the influence of the Leviathans... those evil smiles and calculating, cat like glints in the eyes.

Other than that, as far as I am concerned, the movie is a disaster area, but I'm the only person I know who thinks that.  (Well, now I think of it, my video junkie housemate watched it and agreed that Joan's scenes were the only salvageable parts of the flick.)

Of course my tape of it was made from a TV broadcast.  If I ever have the chance to see the Anchor Bay DVD, I might slightly alter my opinion.  But, honestly, I'm SO not a Dario Argento fan.

Well, he and Nancy do have wonderful chemistry together as Desmond and Leticia, and, to some degree, in the 1841 PT segment as Kendrick and Melanie.

It's just that in my twisted mind, that pales before the scenario I've concocted that takes place in between the acts with Desmond and Quentin!

Happy Ostara to you and yours, btw.  I pray that a few daffodils will grow, somehow, somewhere, in a quiet green field where no bombs ever fall.

I personally thought Virginia Vestoff was brilliant in the role of Samantha, and I thought it helped that it was a new actress in the part, since she was a different kind of character for the series.

spoilers...

Every time I start watching 1840, I always feel some sadness and frustration, since it started out so well and then just ... jumped the shark!  There are some great scenes in the second half of the storyline, but the whole premise of somebody being tried for witchcraft in 1840 Maine and being sentenced to decapitation is just so preposterous, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Anybody else besides me find the room gets considerably warmer every time Quentin and Desmond are on screen together?

So, Jennifer, don't you wish Tim would take his shirt off some time???

I just mourn that we don't get to see more of Don Briscoe's hot body during the remainder of his time on DS!  There used to be some gorgeous snaps of him from the house of DS film on Michael Miozza's lovely website devoted to the films.

Well, I happened to be home this morning and turned on the set, and the show was on, and the camera showed the top of Petofi's face and was right over his nose--and I'm sorry, but if there was any tape or putty there, *I* didn't see it.

And so it goes.

Jennifer thanks for noting this.  I watched Night Gallery religiously back in the original b'cast.  There are a lot of them I haven't seen since.  One of my top faves is "Since Aunt Ada came to stay."  When I was living in Taiwan, at some point I was walking down a street.  I happened to pass a TV store and they were running NG (with Chinese subtitles, of course!) and it was Aunt Ada.  I remember I stood there and watched the entire show standing in front of that shop.  Nobody bothered me, of course, I was just the crazy foreigner watching telly on the street.

"Certain Shadows on the Wall" with the fabulous Grayson Hall in an incredible cast (Agnes Moorehead, Louis Heyward, and Rachel Roberts) is another top fave, and so is Return of the Sorceror with Bill Bixby, Vincent Price, and this witch-chick whose name eludes me at present.  I'll never forget Vinny's line "that woman is insatiable!"

There are a lot of great ones.  Oh and the Big Surprise, with darling John Carradine--probably the best piece of film he ever did!

I'll have to try and figure out just when Sci Fi runs the series.

This thread is really fascinating.

I've watched some of these shows 4 or 5 times and never paid any attention whatsoever as to what was going on with Thayer's nose.

If I can tear my attention away from his amazing performance as the Count long enough to check, I'll be sure and have a look at the bridge of his nose next time I watch these shows.

Thanks for clueing me in,

Current Talk '03 I / Re:Ms. Barrett's/Charity's/Pansy's Dramatic Lines
« on: March 13, 2003, 09:37:13 PM »
Just to make it clear ... I don't think Nancy was making a criticism, explicit or implicit, of Grayson's acting abilities.  The two did have a lot of scenes together but Nancy doesn't really recall working with her. What she does remember is how Grayson always loved to have her over to her home for some spectacular culinary creation.

When Nancy participated in an online chat, a friend was kind enough to ask her, on my behalf, about her memories of Grayson.  She said on that occasion that although she and Grayson had very few scenes together on Dark Shadows, she would never forget Grayson's friendship or her wonderful hospitality.

She also commented that Grayson had changed her date of birth on her driver's license.  Nancy added the laughing comment:  "You have to be Grayson Hall to be able to get away with things like that!"

For what it's worth, in a 1973 fan interview, Grayson Hall said she thought Nancy Barrett was the best actress on DS, bar none.

Grayson mentioned her performances as Pansy and Letitia as something that particularly impressed her.

When I asked Nancy about Grayson, she commented upon what a wonderful cook she was!

Current Talk '03 I / Re:DS DVD question
« on: March 13, 2003, 05:07:13 PM »
Well,  good Goddess, Darren, you would think encoding the DVDs per act would be a no-brainer for these boys!  Ah well.

Here's another question for all the brains in the audience (lol).  Actually, this one pertains to folks who have had DVD players for a few years.

Do the little dears (the players, lol) hold up longer than CD players seem to do?  My latest CD player is dying on me.  I have yet to purchase one that lasted longer than 2 years.  The Walgreens downstairs from where I work has DVD players (APEX ones) priced at 60 bucks which is not too bad for something expected not to last longer than 18 months, I reckon.

John, I completely agree with your assessment of lie deee AHRMP shire (I love how Pansy says it).  She is the only KLS character I personally have any time for, apart from 1966 Maggie.  She goes from being a deliciously calculating, devious little minx to being the standard snivelling KLS victim.  It must have been an incredibly frustrating moment for the actress when she realized what was going on.

On the other hand, Lady Kitty does finally get to manhandle Angelique, satisfying generations of fans who had been itching to see a catfight between Josette and her conniving maid.

So you see, my dear, every silver lining has its cloud (quoting from my well thumbed copy of the Wit and Wisdom of Morticia Addams).

She was spending a lot of time that Summer working on her book, the Bennett Playbill.  I believe it was published in January 1970.

Sorry to disagree, but I don't think Thayer wore any facial prosthetics as Petofi.

It's all him, so far as I can tell.  And what a wonderful job he did as the Count.  Such delicious unpleasantness.

Wasn't there a discussion of his nose the last time we all went through 1897?
