Netflix doesn't have a good track record for certain titles.  I think sometimes a more esoteric title may be damaged and they fail to replace it, or they decide they're just now going to stock certain titles.  They don't seem to stock at all the MGM classic horror set with Mad Love, Mark of the Vampire, and Mask of Fu Manchu from a couple of years ago which seems like a pretty extreme oversight.  I have noticed other examples recently.  So, I'll be surprised if they do stock one of those to-order titles.

I've looked all over their site to see if there's a way to request a title but the only option seems if they have made an entry for the movie to click on the "save" button.  Needless to say, this doesn't help if they haven't bothered to make a page for the movie you want them to stock.

Julia and Quentin both look as if they're recovering from the most deadly hangovers. And is Julia guzzling that coffee, or what?

That "lemon or cream" scene between the two young misses of Collinwood is priceless.  I love the slumber party sequence at Maggie's a little later on in that storyline, too.

For what it's worth, there's a Sylvania VCR/DVD combo player on Amazon now for $34.04.  However, it takes 2 to 4 weeks to ship for whatever reason, and I imagine you need it NOW because of the current TV shows you follow.

I would try trawling through the local Good Will and similar shops because some of them probably do have VCRs.  I'd take a decent tape with me to try it out in the store before purchasing it however.

Good luck!

Thanks for a good giggle, MB.

Hey Brian,

I'm sure MB will check in about this eventually, but I believe it is in honor (?) of a certain piece of clothing worn *endlessly* by PT 1970 Quentin Collins and frequently regarded as the "most hideous piece of clothing" ever to appear on the series.

Though such wardrobe items as Bruno's ranch poodle jacket, Cassandra's garish purple butterfly caftan, Julia's hideous nubby orange suit, and Maggie's outrageous patchwork quilt skirt, give the Quentin orange jacket quite a run for its money in the unsightly costumery department... hey, it was the late Sixties!

Fans,

Katie Scott had a fairly substantial guest role (as the Duchess of Fitzhugh--shades of Lady 'Ampshire!) in the episode "God save the Queen" in the short-lived series Tales of the Gold Monkey (originally broadcast 1982-83, with a regular cast including Stephen Collins and Roddy McDowall).

According to regular industry sources, the series will have a commercial DVD release this June.  A friend had given me several discs with episodes of this program last year and I watched Katie's episode earlier this week.  It's a good time for fans of her work and it seems as if she must have had fun doing it.  She gets to do a couple of comic touches which I know from reading her books is something she wishes she were allowed to do more often.

Katie doesn't come on until around the 20 minute mark in the show, but once she appears, she's on quite a bit.

Brenda Dickson's personal infomercial on her website is an utter HOOT!

She comes across as about as crazy as a rat in a coffee-can.  "Never eat sugar--it causes wrinkles!"  "The Eighties was THE decade for glamour!"

Also, check out David Hasselhoff's over the top music videos for further hootdom.

I really wish that somehow, some day, Grayson Hall and Nancy Barrett's scenes from One Life to Live could be released on DVD...

Lydia, I disagree that Julia would have had a chat with Quentin about the necessity of destroying Barnabas.  I think, if anything, she would have grown all the more fanatically devoted to him and there might have been a repeat of the dynamic towards the end of the 1967 storyline, only this time with the backdrop of a growing emotional closeness between B & J--whether Lela Swift (who was I think then the de facto head writer) would have taken this into a romantic relationship between the two is hard to know.

I personally think the main drive to move into PT was the need to come up with a way of maintaining production on the series while most of the main actors were working on the movie.  I've often thought that the series might have had a longer life if it had gone on hiatus periodically--I realize that soap operas never go on hiatus, but since when did Dark Shadows follow the rules of others.  This would have give everyone a break from the relentless pressure of producing the show, would have given those who wished to do so the chance to pursue other projects, etc.

I still think that DC was behind pulling the plug for good on the show in March 1971 simply because he did not want to have to deal with another situation like what happened in the Spring of 1970.

Did anyone check to see what was actually aired?

It would be really great for the original series to have a home again on broadcast TV even though the networks seem to be well along to going the way of the dinosaurs...

Dear Cousin Barnabas,

just keep repeating to yourself those magic words--"Warners greenlights Night of DS restoration project..."

It's the main thing I focus on at this point.  I'm quite prepared to hear next that they're going to cast the whole Depp Shadows thing with Muppets at this point.  (particularly if the new Muppet movie really takes off--fancy Miss Piggy as Angelique?)

The three things the suits care about are sales, sales, and sales.  Oh and merchandising.

That's wonderful news, Midnite.  I surely wish that Netflix carried Sinister Cinema releases!

A friend says you use something he calls "polarized" glasses to watch now with the new technique. It sounds like a complete upgrade from the old 3 D.

To be blunt, I find it all a crashing bore.  But for those who are into it--the "industry" is jumping on this bigtime.

Another of Kaplan's habits was to make the rounds of the dressing rooms immediately after the day's taping and offer grades to various actors on their performances.

Although those I have heard mention him always spoke of him with fondness, you get the impression that he could be a real s.o.b.

Again, I'm seeing a sequence that has always been one of the few highlights of hoDS through new eyes thanks to the current wonderful selection of captures.

Unlike many other parts of the movie, this scene did present a pivotal moment in the drama where notes of character came strongly to the fore, despite DC's determination to focus on action, blood, and carnage as much as possible.

Wonderful series, MB.  Thanks!

I know I've mentioned this before, but for what it's worth, Violet Welles in the one interview she did with a fan (published in Dale Clark's wonderful, much-missed Inside the Old House zine) mentioned coming back to write for DS at the end of the series.  She had started out ghost-writing (ha ha) for Gordon Russell on the show and I suspect that whenever Gordon got a credit for an episode in 1971, it was actually Violet's work.  That accounts for how good some of the dialogue in the PT 1841 episodes is, even when the actual plot fails to make sense or hold up.
