There is talk of the wind, the gulls, and the sea.  I notice these sound effects when the old house exterior is shown as it must be very close to the water, but how close we are not shown.
Vickie says she will help Matthew, but he blames her for all his troubles with her snooping and prying.
At the big house, David seems unconcerned that Vickie is missing. Mrs J prattles on about all the dire things that have probably happened to Vickie such as her body broken on the rocks and all the while she smokes like a chimney at the breakfast table.  While Mrs J is clanking around the breakfast dishes, David loads a big bag of food for Matthew and steals Mrs J.s cigarettes. Mrs. J who always has a comment on everything doesn't notice the bag he is holding while she talks to him. She does tell him it is his fault Vickie is missing.
Nice conversation for a boy's breakfast.
Matthew is cunnning enough to pretend he is just learning of the hidden and gagged Vickie when David tells him
David now feels guilty that she is missing and he is sure Roger has her.  Matthew leaves for some water and David returns with the cigarettes when he hears Vickie screaming from behind the wall.  Exciting stuff.

As Carolyn and Elizabeth discuss Vickie and fight over Burke, I remember Sam Hall saying that Carolyn was not written well before he took over, but she is a spoiled teen who thinks she knows it all, but perhaps this gets lost in the writers between now and the Hall regime.
More location footage as Roger pulls up with the car.

Matthew gags Vickie and ties her up wihich is probably her best chance at survival as she just doesn't know when to shut up or at least humor people she doesn't agree with.
Burke and Joe get Roger's guns. It is hard to picture Roger having guns and why hasn't David been playing with them?
This seems to be the first massive search through the woods that has been shown onscreen. We do not see the sheriff with his twelve men because this is a Dan Curtis world in which only a few people are allowed to exist at any given time.
Josette glows, but not at the right time. One would think that she'd have this ghost thing down after one hundred and thirty years.

Elizabeth worries to Mrs J about Vickie.  She's a good worrrier.  Joe reveals that he hasn't seen Carolyn for a week and of course she is with Burke.  Burke seems upset that Vickie is seeing Frank and then when Joe arrives Burke is jumping at the chance to find her.  Carolyn gets ordered to her room by her mother.

A cab driver comes for Vickie even though she said earlier she was taking the bus.  The Frank calls and says that she didn't get off the bus.  Thus alerting the inhabitants of Collinwood that something may be up.
Mrs. Johnson states she is bitter towards Matthew. Seems llike a normal day in her world.  Vickie sneaks out of the room, but fails to think that she might need a weapon to use against Matthew who she knows can overpower her.

David takes more food to Matthew.  Maybe Matthew has a Coleman stove in the secret room but more likely he is just eating things cold out of the can as we used to in days before there were microwaves and we were not allowed to use the stove.
Vickie has the tartan bag ready for her trip to Bangor to try and understand things.  I hate to tell you dear but that is not going to happen.
There is a desk in the living room for Elizabeth to sit in front of now.
Vickie goes to Old House to look for David, drops her wallet as Matthew hides.  Matthew finds it as she walks down the steps.  She misses the wallet and retraces her steps though the woods to the fence and finally back to the Old House.  This is the longest walk through the woods so far. There Matthew catches her.
! Matthew still on the loose.  Would one not carry Roger's shotgun through the woods if one were Vickie enough to go in the first place?

I was wondering about the take 2 also.  Technical problems?  Rewriting a bad episode?  Hard to believe it could be the actors messing up as some of the disasters they have gone with should have been redone.
Roger informs Vickie, she is the enemy if she sees Burke.  What about your niece, your son?   The next thing Vickie pulls up in Carolyn's car to Burke's hotel.  Way to be conspicuous.  Vickie tells Burke she owes the Collins her loyalty.  Which is true.  Burke kisses her.  Will Carolyn and David find out?
Loved when Elizabeth asked Roger why he wasn't at work?
Elizabeth catches David sneaking out.
Burke calls to gloat that he has bought Logansport.  Roger is ready to cave in and sell.
David escapes with a bag of food for Matthew and wanders his way through the wood to the Old House.
Vickie tells Elizabeth and Roger she will never see Burke again.  That bad a kisser or breath?
David leaves the Old House so Matthew hasn't killed him yet.

The exterior footage of Matthew walking to the Old House with lantern held high is replayed.  No worries about anyone spotting him with that beacon.  The bookcase takes the place of the louvered door that was there in an earlier episode and matched the one to the left of the fireplace.
Mrs J comes to tell Burke about the goings on with Matthew.  Clarice has to feed Mitch his lines at one point he is so lost and I'm really annoyed.  He is good when he knows his line making Burke believable and then the next time he reads off the teleprompter and stumbles over lines and it all goes so wrong because he can be good.  They decide that Mrs. J will stay on to nail Roger.  David continues his infatuation with Burke, sees Mrs. J and suspects there is something going on with them.
The episode ends with more exterior footage as David runs to the Old House and is grabbed by Matthew.

A nicely plotted episode.  The action moved along in the cottage at a fast pace.  Elizabeth takes charge of the situation and Matthew proves to be no match for her.  With all the plot points tying up over the Bill Malloy death, continuing the antagonism between Roger and Vickie, moving the new romance along, reaffirming the menace of Burke, and revealing that the Matthew story is not over, it all  came together.

Matthew's determination to kill Vickie as she tries to change his mind makes for an exciting episode. I always wonder what someone who was watching these in the original run thought.  Were they surprised that Matthew turned out to be the killer.  For someone who is protray ed as being rather simple, Matthew counters  Vickie's arguments quite nicely.  He says he will hide the body.  Going from accidental killer  to rather cold blooded murderer.  Though when he tried to chock Burke in an earlier episode, it seemed, that he would have been successful except for being pulled off.   Now he is pondering the best way to kill Vickie.  She should suggest he go get some of Elizabeth's sedatives and give her a drug overdose.  Then the great Lady herself show up in the nick of time.

A repeat of the urn crashing towards Vickie.  Way to reuse footage.  Vickie goes to Matthew who stops her from calling the sheriff.  I'm not quite sure that Vickie realizes that Matthew is a threat even once she realizes he is lying.  How hard would it be to grab something and clobber him?   I can only hope with this revelation that we never hear about the pen again.  "I have to kill you"  Go Matthew.

Roger has an alibi. So who is out to get the governess?  Vickie goes around the house turning on all the lights.  Liz tells Matthew to search the cliffs and he heads to the old house.  Vickie gets there and Matthew pushes an urn off the roof and towards the governess on the ground below.  A reprieve from the Pen.

I'm having issues with this again.  Bill's death was ruled an accident.  To reopen the case a grand jury would have to be called and new evidence presented to a jury to determine if there is enough evidence to reopen and reclassify this case as possibly being murder.  Vickie now thinks Roger is trying to kill her.  Roger is apparently arrested for having a pen.

The producers obviously thought through their location shots for this writing cycle.  It was fun to see the sheriffs car with flashing lights in front of the house.  Too bad they didn't keep using this footage in the future.
We only have Burke's word that there a few pens like this and how does he know that more knock offs were not made. This storyline is simply awful.
