Current Talk '24 I / Re: Discuss - Ep #0069

Mrs. Johnson arrives at Burke’s hotel room. She too, thinks Bill’s death was no accident. Everyone in town knew that she was fond of Malloy, except Malloy. Sarah says he’d do anything for Elizabeth in a bitter tone. How does everyone know how she felt? Did she go around town over telling everyone? She seems somewhat unhinged. Shouldn’t she be a suspect?
Joe and Carolyn chatting in Roger’s office. It’s obviously a town day. Joe reveals that Laura switched from Burke to Roger. I’m not sure either one sees the comparison to Burke and them.
Burke wants Sarah to work at Collinwood as his spy. Carolyn knocks on door and Burke hides Sarah in the kitchen which of course Carolyn wants to use. He says it’s dirty in there. Carolyn says Roger denies everything.
Burke then says Sarah needs a job and Carolyn thinks it’s a keen idea that she work at Collinwood.

Carolyn and Her Uncle Roger discuss Burke’s accusations and Roger reminds her Burke can’t recall the accident, but he and her Aunt Laura can.
David is reading the history of Josette Collins, when Vickie comes looking for him and he hides from her. He reveals some of his life with his fighting parents.
Patterson surprises Roger, who knew nothing about Matthew’s attack on Burke, when he comes to call. I wonder why he doesn’t know and is it important?
David accuses Vickie of trying to hurt his friend Burke, runs out and into his father who has returned home.
Roger has decided to befriend his enemy and sweet talks Vickie. He also sweet talks David. It becomes apparent that David has a plan to get rid of Vickie. The whole exchange between the two is really quite amusing.
Carolyn and Vickie chat. She is mad at Joe because he had to work and she wanted to go on a lunch date. She doesn’t want to marry him now, but then he calls and asks her to dinner. All is forgiven.  The spoiled child side of her is definitely dominate today. Really quite an enjoyable episode.

Maggie and Carolyn are talking in the diner. Maggie is bitter about Burke.  This exchange makes me wonder how well the girls know each other. Maggie had never been to Collinwood before recently and Carolyn is obviously younger.
The arrival of Mrs. Johnson brings many questions. She appears to be jealous of Bill’s relationship with the Collins family and in particular Elizabeth. More questions on the timeline. Mrs. Johnson recalls a 10:30 call.
Meanwhile, in the diner, Sam asks Maggie if she knows the sequence of events.
Carolyn has gone to Burke’s room and asks if he accuses Roger of Bill’s death. She refuses to believe Burke.

Roger says he will talk to Burke alone and then goes on to say he has nothing to add about the trial and Bill’s demise.
In a total change of pace, Vickie is writing a letter to herself. She reveals to Elizabeth she started writing them a a lonely child in the foundling home. Elizabeth looks distressed when Vickie says nothing much happened to her until she came to Collinwood. She still wants to find her parents. Elizabeth says, “ Isn't it enough, to know that you are here now?” Vickie misses what Elizabeth has implied.
Downstairs, Roger says he was home later than he was and gets Vickie to back him up. Burke is furious that his plan didn’t work. Does all this drama over a few minutes really matter? There would have to be some witnesses or evidence to back it up. Even if Bill was pushed, anyone could have done it. Burke implies that he will be back to take over the great house.

[Flowers Animated] Burke storms into Collinwood. Why isn’t there a storm raging outside?  He wants Roger and Elizabeth wants him to leave. She intends to call the sheriff, but then decides they will wait for Roger together.
Meanwhile, Roger is at the Blue Whale trying to track down Sam and learn what secrets he may have spilled.
Sam goes to the bar, but Roger moves him to a more private table.
Elizabeth remembers her hostess duties and offers tea or liquor.  She decides to make tea as Vickie enters the room. The mistress of Collinwood leaves Vickie to entertain the determined guest. Vickie reveals she wanted to be a bareback rider as a child in the foundling home. Elizabeth brings tea using the silver service. Roger comes in and Elizabeth greets him in the foyer with the news of Burke’s presence,
The are lots of stumbled lines and teleprompter use by the four principals. Only Alexandra seems to know her lines.  Also an appearance of the intrusive Mike.

Carolyn confronts Mother over Maggie’s visit and telling her that Burke is capable of murder. Matthew lurks at the Blue Whale as Burke walks in and grabs his arm. Their talk ends in a schoolyard scuffle and then the sheriff enters and send them to his office.
In the office, there is much ado about Bill. Burke keeps insisting it’s murder.  Patterson send Matthew out in the Hall and lectures Burke to mind his own business. Burke is sent to his hotel and Matthew is to no longer bully Burke.
Meanwhile, in the Drawing room, Elizabeth revisits what Burke is saying about Roger. Carolyn resists believing Burke is a bad boy. There is a knock on the door and Elizabeth expects Matthew, but it’s bad boy Burke.

Joe and Carolyn are on a date. She’s not her usual happy swinging self tonight at the blue Whale. Joe tries to cajole her out of her funk by talking about Mallory’s drowning.
At Collinwood, Elizabeth and Matthew talk about Malloy. Matthew says there were no marks on the body when he pushed him out to sea.  How could he see in the dark?  Elizabeth says there was a blow to the head and it must have occurred after Matthew pushed the body out to crash about some more on the rocky coast.
Elizabeth fears there will always be talk in town.
Maggie arrives at the bar talking to the kids while looking for Pop or Burke. Maggie leaves and shows up at Collinwood. She wants to see Roger who isn’t home. This is Maggie’s first trip to the mansion on Widows Hill.
She and Elizabeth chat about Malloy and Burke’s manslaughter.
Matthew arrives at the busy bar and speaks to Joe and Carolyn. He’s looking for the troublemaker Burke.
Carolyn comes home and Elizabeth states that Burke is capable of murder.  Carolyn isn’t willing to believe the dreamy ex-con is capable.  Who’d have thought that Malloy would be so popular after is demise.

Sam and Burke talk in Burke’s room about why Sam left the party. Sam wants to settle things. Vickie has also left the so-called party and Roger confronts her about what went on. Vickie reveals they talked about the manslaughter.  Roger recites his version which Vickie points out differs from Burke’s.
At the Hotel, Burke and Sam go on and on about the manslaughter and Bill.  Burke feels Mallory’s death was murder.  Burke has come to conclusion that Roger is guilty.
At Collinwood, Roger wants Vickie to believe he left the house later than he actually did. He tries to talk her into taking a job in Florida. She goes upstairs and he leaves.

[4011].  Burke forces his way in the cottage and invites himself to dinner. Says he’ll take a sandwich. Maggie should have told him to make his own sandwich. Then he wants a drink. Sam complies. I’d have said, “ I hope you like water. Taps in the kitchen.”   Of course, Sam being the alcoholic that he is, won’t want to drink alone. Burke then wants to talk about the manslaughter case despite no one else wanting to discuss it. Burke reveals that at some point on the drunken drive, Roger took over driving and he killed the guy. Sam goes into the kitchen and flees the disastrous dinner party. Burke thinks Sam killed Malloy.
Sam goes to the Hotel and tries to get the letter from Wells.  No go, must give it to Maggie. Burke learns from the chatty Wells, that Sam was at the hotel. Will Maggie ever have another dinner party? Will anyone want to come?

[Pump] Guess who’s coming to dinner? Vickie, our heroine in her Nancy Drew guise.  Before this we are treated (?) to David Ford holding the chalkboard with cigarette dangling in hand.
The action starts with Maggie and Vickie arriving at the Evans cottage. Vickie finds a painting that looks like her and becomes obsessed over it. Then she tells Maggie about seeing the ghost in the doorway at Collinwood I’m liking their interaction so far, but dreading the arrival which has been spoiled by the opening shot.
Burke storms into the sheriff’s office and demands answers. I’d like to see the Sheriff haul him off to a cell and say,” until you get a grip on yourself, you’ll be staying here.”
Sam arrives and reveals that the picture is of Betty Hanscomb who died before Vickie was born. Sam remembers the accident. Burke was really drunk and drove off with Roger and Laura. A man was killed in hit and run. Is this the first time Laura’s name is mentioned? The seem to always refer to her as David’s Mom or Roger’s wife.  Then Burke shows up uninvited at the little dinner party.

Roger speaks to the sheriff again. Patterson has to figure out how Bill got in the water. Maybe he should put a call into Cabot Cove?  Elizabeth comes down and joins them. The purpose of the fateful meeting that never happened is discussed.
David gleefully tells Vickie that Roger will go to prison. David tells her the widows told him Roger is guilty. David tells Vickie he doesn’t care if Roger kills her.
Elizabeth grills Roger and he seemingly admits he killed Malloy, but then says he lied. Elizabeth apologizes to him.
Vickie goes to dine at the Evans cottage.

Sam is at the Blue Whale.  Surprise! Joe comes in and gets a beer and joins Sam for some daytime drinking as the plant is closed. Sam grills Joe about where Sam went in the sea. Joe leaves to take Carolyn for a ride when the sheriff comes in. George takes Sam to his office and Sam sticks to the know nothing story.
At Collinwood, David studies tide charts with hopes of pinning the death on his beloved father. Carolyn joins him and he reveals he finds Collinwood fun. “What other kid gets to live in a house full of ghosts.”   He says he has lots of friends.  Joe arrives and helps with the charts.  David answers the door to the sheriff.

The Raging Queen!  Just that name gives me lots of story ideas, though They probably wouldn’t make it onscreen in 1970.  If the writers had run out of ideas, then why not hire new ones. I’ve always found Sam Hall to be mediocre.

It is revealed that the restaurant is on Main Street.  And here is where we pick up the story as Maggie and Burke chat. Bill gave Burke his start on the boats. Maggie realizes she has to break the news of Bill’s watery demise.  Burke goes out in the hotel lobby to use the mysterious moving phone booth.
Burke leaves. Enter Vickie. She has come for lunch with her new pal Maggie. They rehash their first conversation when Maggie warned her from the people and place of Collinwood. Vickie needs answers to her past!
Burke goes to Patterson. He is told not to leave town.  Burke tells about the meeting with Roger and Sam. Mallory’s watch stopped at 10:45.  Now the sheriff does not seem to consider that the watch may have been purposely stopped at that time or that it could have broken while being banged about in the water. Malloy drowned and suffered a blow to the head. They are unsure then he was dealt the blow. Should the Sheriff really be sharing this with Burke?
Maggie offers a free lunch to Vickie. They talk of Lobster rolls and clam chowder.  I don’t recall it being on the reader board menu; maybe it’s on the printed one?

Carolyn has slept in. The first time in years.  Elizabeth produces the lost watch and explains Joe found it. She also tells her daughter that there was a body. A call comes and they found it two miles down shore. Carolyn goes upstairs to find Vickie making the bed and helps her. Carolyn sobs and then reveals the horrible news that Bill is dead.
Roger tracks down Sam at the Blue whale. Surprise!  He tells his cohort that an autopsy will be done. Roger tells the drunkard what to say and that they must stand United.
Carolyn opens the Collins family history book.  Roger comes home and tells his sister that he hoped it wasn’t Bill who was found in the ocean. He closes the plant for the rest of the day.
