It was actually four when I sat down to watch this. David appears to have picked up his aunts habit of looking out the open window towards the sea. Apparently when Mrs J cleaned the cottage she decided to throw out the old cabinets an uncover the fireplace. Laura says she never unpacked, yet she has been here for days and changed clothes and coats  often. Maybe she jus twitches her nose and a new outfit appears.

David wants to see his mother, changes his mind and ends up saying that she is not his mother. Other people have commented that Laura seems changed and different.  David seems to have sense of these things. Maybe this is not his mother only someone who looks as if she were Laura.

When Maggie says that Laura does not eat and seldom drinks her coffee, I cannot help but think it could be a reflection on someone's cooking skills.  Laura was considered to be hopelessly insane. I can picture electroshock. I wonder if Roger had considered lobotomy.

The family minus Carolyn is gathered around the breakfast table and we learn David hasn't seen Laura since he was five. Roger naturally is all for getting rid of David and accuses his sister of wanting him. Vickie reveals to David that she was angry as he as a child and finally we get some. Motivation as to why Vickie is so determined to work with him. Roger is reduced to doing Matthews work as Elizabeth tells him he is tactless and she will tell David about Laura. Their interactions are so much fun. David reveals he already knows he saw Laura in a blue coat looking into the fire.

Mrs J listens in on Roger calling Laura Murdock.  We learn that Laura's family moved away. Burke is shocked Laura is back. Davis swinging in a location scene as Laura in a studio scene watches him secretly. Laura is quite the mysterious one. There is a sense about her that she is not quite there and her phrasing is unusual.
Laura arrives at the house and Roger comes into the foyer to face her. She wants to see her son.  They go to talk to Elizabeth and Laura reveals she no longerd drinks. Laura only wants complete custody of David. Davis is meanwhile sleepwalking dreams of Laura. Is it not odd that after getting out of the insane asylum that Laura didn't come for her son?

In the VoiceOver Vickie states her life is serene. Finally a. Real from being menaced, kidnapped, and hated.
Sam reveals he is not sure  that Lauraknows he witnessed the accident. Is this the first time we know exactly Sam's roll in said accident?  Sam becomes inspired to paint and then does not remember painting a woman in flames.

Sam seems to have gotten bombed in record time, but then he can suck them down. The look on Rogers's face when Sam said Laura's back in town was great.

Joan Bennett and Alexandra sit on the top of the staircase in the VTR Board sequence.  The Matthew death scene and the rescue are replayed. In a new sequence, Mrs J says in her usual upbeat manner that Vickie won't be seen again.  When she does come in Elizabeth refers to  her as , "Vickie darling."  Vickie credits Josette with saving her and so far nobody tries to disuade her she is dreaming or imaging it as they have before. Elizabeth tells Burke, "the girls are important to me, Don't hurt them,"  Vickie seems flattered that Burke was looking for her.  Vickie tells him, " I'm not afraid of this house anymore, I'm at home here."  I wonder if the writers had seen The Haunting.
At 2 in the morning, Elizabeth brings Vickie pills to sleep and Vickie reveals that Josette looked like her and that she may be her ancestor.  Elizabeth looks away. Elizabeth has really let her guard down where Vickie is concerned.  The ghost story she tells ends with Josette twirling around the pillars of her decaying home.

Matthew gets a small hatchet from the toolshed and I recall my grandmother choping the heads of chickens and geese with a large axe and all the blood and multiple shops to get the head off.
Vickie cries for help and Josette steps out of her painting and tells Vickie not to cry or be afraid.
David finally reveals that Vickie is at the Old House.  Burke and Roger arm themselves with guns,
Matthew comes in with the little hatchet and Vickie probably realizing that it will take a long time to hack her head off tries to disuade him with talk of seeing Josette and that the ghosts like her and will haunt him.
Voices call to Matthew and Bill Malloy is singing.  The widows appear and want his life.  Matthew screams and Vickie yells.  Burke bursts in with Roger. They get Vickie.  Roger touches Matthew who is in a chair and he falls over dead on the floor.  I see that KLS got a credit as Maggie Evans. I remember reading that they got paid most for the first performance of a week and each later performance was paid at a lesser rate. Some pay and credit is better than none particularly in the KLS world.

David once again hopes Roger dies and Roger refuses to agree not to punish him. While this is going on Matthew decides that he will leave and take Vickie as hostage.
Vickie finally realizes she needs to placate Matthew instead of arguing with him. Matthew goes to get the hidden car.
Bill appears to David warns him of Vickies need for help and the audience finally gets proof that David has seen a ghost.  Bill also appears to Matthew and drives him over the edge.
Vickie manages to loosen the ropes and runs out straight into Matthews clutches. He thinks she is Elizabeth giving Vickie the glimmer op hope that she can escape, but then he comes back to his reality and decides he must kill the snooping governess.
Burke meanwhile has come pounding at the door of the Great house at Collinwood in response to David's call. Roger stubbornly refuses to get David.

David has found Vickie but then preceeds to sit around and talk and then they get into their ususal big sister little brother arguments while Matthew could be back at any minute and kill them both!  Vickie can just not shut up to save her life.  David then can't untie her and she begins to talk about the sheriff and David runs off.
The lady in the suit is eating in the cafe and asks about Roger, reacts to Burkes name and that he is in the hotel's so called presidental suite.  She lights a cigarette adding to her smoking good looks.
Sam comes in and seems to know the lady.

As Joe and Maggie talk at the counter he reveals he and Carolyn are history and then the lady in the suit comes in and she looks familiar to Joe. The lady knew Grace who was the person Maggie replaced five years earlier. She knows the town and asks about the Collins family.
David brings more food for Matthew and eventually it all leads to David opening the secret panel and finds his governess thus blowing the theory that Roger was the culprit.

David is desperate to have someone tell him Roger is guilty. He even walks to town to get Burke who says Roger is not involved.  Someone calls Matthews name as he tries to sleep  Vickie doesn't hear the voices and the audience sees Josette glow. Matthew leaves the secret room and more voices and Josette glows. Matthew goes back in and cuts Vickie loose and she tries to convince him its a dream.

Matthew returns to find David who thinks he heard a ghost and Matthew agrees. Mrs. J who prior to her stay at the mansion stated she did not believe in ghosts, but now she has changed her tune and tells Mrs. Stoddard that the widows call Vickies name at night.  Then she berates the sheriff for being incompetent.
It's really a shame that she wasn't in every episode

There is talk of the wind, the gulls, and the sea.  I notice these sound effects when the old house exterior is shown as it must be very close to the water, but how close we are not shown.
Vickie says she will help Matthew, but he blames her for all his troubles with her snooping and prying.
At the big house, David seems unconcerned that Vickie is missing. Mrs J prattles on about all the dire things that have probably happened to Vickie such as her body broken on the rocks and all the while she smokes like a chimney at the breakfast table.  While Mrs J is clanking around the breakfast dishes, David loads a big bag of food for Matthew and steals Mrs J.s cigarettes. Mrs. J who always has a comment on everything doesn't notice the bag he is holding while she talks to him. She does tell him it is his fault Vickie is missing.
Nice conversation for a boy's breakfast.
Matthew is cunnning enough to pretend he is just learning of the hidden and gagged Vickie when David tells him
David now feels guilty that she is missing and he is sure Roger has her.  Matthew leaves for some water and David returns with the cigarettes when he hears Vickie screaming from behind the wall.  Exciting stuff.
