Current Talk '24 I / Re: Discuss - Ep #0084

David takes Vickie to the closed off wing. Vickie mentions the pen, more often than she did her stay at the foundling home. David mentions his friends that live there. The ones that never die! David locks Vickie in the attic room which can only be described as a hoarders paradise.
Downstairs, Elizabeth and Carolyn talk about the scene with Joe. Carolyn becomes remorseful. She calls and he comes running to the Great House. Elizabeth begins to miss the governess and her pupil. Joe is expected to take Carolyn out. She becomes enraged again when she learns he has a dinner date. She never wants to see him again. Run, Joe, Run.
David appears starving for some pie. He says he was outside. Lightening and thunder rock the house. It’s a stormy night all around. There is no scene, but I imagine David enjoying a piece of pie with a huge smile on his face.

[Flowers Animated] Vickie is missing the pen. She and David search for it and it’s clear she suspects David and he knows it. Roger is meanwhile burying the pen on the grounds. David suspects Roger and Vickie does not. Davis suggests the ghosts in the deserted wing took it.
In town, Maggie and Joe discuss his love life and future plans and the deserted wing. She invites him to dinner.
David tells Roger he’s going to get even with Vickie. It’s dark and stormy and somehow Vickie and David are alone in the house?  Joe stops by to discuss his love life with Vickie after finding Carolyn away. Joe leaves and David tells Vickie he has the pen. It’s in the closed off wing.  Vickie shall have to follow him there.

[Easter Flowers]. Vickie tries to get David to focus on his studies, but he is much more interested in Malloy’s death and hopeful of Roger’s part in it. He also is fascinated by Vickie’s pen. Roger sees that Vickie has the pen
Meanwhile at the cafe, Burke harasses the sheriff about Malloy and his suspicions about the pen. Roger shows up and Burke badgers him about the pen.
Roger returns home and sees Vickie has the pen. He tries to get Vickie to leave town. No doubt taking the pen.  Later Roger purloins the pen.

A lot more than that episode were either damaged and or lost.  They were replaced with kinescopes that had been sent off to other time zone and countries that didn’t have the ability to record a program over the air and then show it at a later time. They stopped doing this for the later episodes after technology caught up in places like Alaska. I remember reading an article about it, but can’t remember when or where. I think there is an explanation by Lara Parker on the DVD about that episode.

It’s a day for location footage. Matthew outside the enormous front door that magically becomes smaller on set. Matt apologizes to Devlin for trying to murder him. Then he talks to Elizabeth about Mrs. J. He does not want her at Collinwood.
Soon a Taxi pulls up to the mansion and Mrs. J is there for her interview. She will be cooking and cleaning, but most of the house is closed. Mrs. J says she is not a gossip and never repeated a word in 20 years at Malloy’s.  Do all servants obsess over their employers? Matthew and Mrs.J make a good pair.
Mrs. J goes to Burke’s room. He is furious she didn’t get hired on the spot. He accuses her of lousing it up. But all is well as Elizabeth hires the housekeeper.

Roger is fretting about the pen. Elizabeth is looking for David. Roger doesn’t want Mrs J in the house and Elizabeth appears to be ready to move her up to Collinwood. Meanwhile, upstairs, Carolyn wants Vickie’s advice on Joe. Vickie urges her to call him.
Roger has gone for a stroll on the beach, looking for the pen, and throws a rock in the sea. The outdoor footage doesn’t match the indoors.
Joe comes to the house and Elizabeth grills him on his plans, she wants to give him a better Job. He wants to buy his own boat. Roger comes home and is hostile to Joe. Carolyn learns Joe was with Maggie. She ignores the fact Sam was there also. Elizabeth calls Mrs. J about a job, while Vickie shows Roger the pen she found at Lookout Point. Instead of saying he just lost it, he remains quiet and keeps the saga of the pen alive.

point. Now, Roger could just say he was down on the beach a couple days ago and must have lost it, but no, he will drag it out

[4269] In secret, in Burke’s room, Mrs J and Burke commiserate on the verdict and he warns her to downplay her reaction. This is to ensure their plot to get her entrenched at Collinwood.  Sarah reveals that Bill was unhappy Roger came home and he felt Sam had gone to seed. So much for employee confidentiality.
Sam and Maggie chat in the cafe when Mrs J comes in and orders vegetable juice, coffee and toast which she shall butter herself. I’m surprised she didn’t ask Maggie to wash her hands and inspect the dishes for cleanliness. Burke comes in and they further the plot by her accusations that Burke’s return led to Bill’s demise.  David comes in and berates the woman he sees as his future jailer.  Burke takes him to his room and beguiles him to want Mrs. J at Collinwood.  Now they must wait for Elizabeth to decide if she will allow another stranger at the Collins house.

Back at the mansion, Carolyn reveals to Vickie the verdict. Vickie, rightfully so, thinks Burke will remain a threat to Collinwood. Vickie is going for a walk on the beach. Cue outdoor footage. There is a lengthy recap of the pen saga between Kitten and her Uncle Roger. Surprise! surprise, Vickie finds the pen on the beach.

David proudly sneaks into town and Burke’s hotel room. Burke is peeved. David reveals he was only following Burke’s advice that it’s okay to break the law if you don’t get caught. Burke doesn’t know that the Collins family know the verdict and Roger is rejoicing. Elizabeth not so much. Carolyn arrives and jealously thinks David is Vickie.  She is unhappy David is there and angry at Burke.  She brings up the pen he gave her and Roger took away. It’s long and convoluted and makes it obvious the pen is an important plot point. Then she infuriates Burke by revealing the coroner’s verdict. Burke is horrified and orders the cousins out. He then storms the police station and confronts Patterson. Burke blames the Collins family influence for the verdict and is hell bent on retribution.

Sam’s turn to drop in on Sheriff Patterson.  All Sam gets offered is coffee. Patterson knows what he really wants as does daughter Maggie when he drops in on her also.
David and Aunt Elizabeth go round about Burke and both are equally stubborn in their points of view. David predictably tries to get Vickie in trouble and then goes against his aunt’s edict to go upstairs. He sneaks into town and converses with the town drunk and his daughter at the cafe.

In reality, this episode should have featured the other two missing participants along with Sam.  Though it does seem right that the most powerful woman in town gets the news first.  It’s accidental.  Burke will be infuriated as will his accomplice Mrs. Johnson, while Roger will rejoice and maybe Sam will celebrate by boozing it up at the Blue Whale. We shall see.

Carolyn decides Vickie is her rival and blows things all out of proportion. It was amusing that Carolyn brings up the never ending foundling home stories that don’t always seem to mesh with each other. Vickie stated that nothing really ever happened to her before Collinwood, yet there are the endless stream of stories for almost any occasion. Carolyn was mostly annoying.
Mrs. Johnson just seems so entitled that it’s hard to imagine Malloy putting up with her. The Mayo reminds me of childhood horror stories about dying from eating bad mayo.

The sheriff is calling at Collinwood early, according to Roger. The sheriff says that he has to rise early with all that goes on in Collinsport. Just wait.
Vickie comes downstairs and Roger sweet talks her into going to tour the Collins holdings. His ulterior motive is to get her to give more evidence of his innocence to Patterson. They dine as the swanky cafe.
Vickie ponders the Collins transition from whales to sardines. Burke arrives to stir things up.
There are lots of nice outdoor walking scenes leading up to the jailhouse so Vickie can help Roger establish his innocence.
Then for some reason Roger nor Vickie plan for her return to Collinwood and of all people she has Burke take her despite Vickie’s fears her employer may be hostile to the idea of her sworn enemy coming to call.

Vickie descends the staircase and Elizabeth wants to talk. David eavesdrops and Matthew catches him. Matthew is mean declares David. David just seems to hate everyone who doesn’t agree with him. Vickie learns there is an old house in the woods. David knows all about it. Why has he never mentioned it before?  Why has Vickie never seen it on her walks?
David draws Josette and it supposedly looks like the picture in the history book. He will take Vickie to see the Old House at dusk.
Carolyn talks to her Mother about hiring Mrs. Johnson. Elizabeth says, “Who’d work here.” She will think about it.
David and Vickie trudge trough the woods. Location footage. The entrance to the Old House is up some stairs and through some huge columns. Nothing like the studio version which has tiny columns and is at ground level.
It’s a mess. David lights a candle. Must be the first in this time. It lights up  Josette’s portrait over the fireplace. David hopes that Vickie will be the third governess to die at Widow’s Hill. Josette is condemned to stay at the Old House until that happy event takes place.  Was Josette to have been a governess in timeline?  Matthew arrives and thinks they are prowlers. The trio leave for Collinwood.
The next scene inside the empty house reveals a glowing portrait from which Josette Collins steps down from and looks around the room. Then she still glowing is on the porch walking around the columns and then twirling. An unexplained supernatural event.  Elizabeth stated earlier that she had David’s ghosts to keep her company and so she does.

Matthew enters and says the thought they were prowlers.
