Barnabas is once again at a loss for answers.  He could have at least said he got the information from Magda which would make sense.  Why should Quentin or anyone trust one who is so evasive.  That being said I noticed that amoung the backstabbing Collins' Barnabas is becoming the trusted go to guy for everything.
I knew without even seeing the credits that Violet wrote this episode.  None of the present day characters seemed in character and it  added to the strange atmosphere.   I see they forgot to restage Josette to Barnabas in the dream.
I agree Taeylor that they should have run the story in the present and the past.  Seeing the present day family even in their weird Violet Welles state made me miss them.

Quentin really went though the wringer in this episode.  I was suprised to see Gail Stickland back.  I knew I'd seen her in other things and just saw  "The Man in the Moon" where she was the Mom.

I wonder what the significance of all the card playing was?  Was it stolen from some story?  I always have to wonder about these things as I've read that they had someone reading stories to see if they could use them on the show.  I liked that it possibly could have been Judith or Minerva who played the card game for Tim.

I have to wonder if Edward's motivation for sending Quentin's children away wasn't more to keep Grandmama from knowing that her more favored grandson had children that might inherit something away from Edward or his children.
Perhaps we are beginning to see a transformation of Quentin's character as he see's he is paying for his sins.  He could easily have said he didn't deserve this fate.
From watching the show as a child, I recalled Beth as being weak and crying all the time, but even though she does cry she is certainly less frightened than Quentin by the supernatural and a stronger person than he.

Should Quentin be such a scardy cat when he's been involved in the black arts for some time?  And growing up at Collinwood with his family.  Of course it would be Trask instead of Satan at the door.  I'd forgotten how the particular plot that is coming up started so now I know
Are Quentin and Evan such good friends?  Quentin probably doesn't know what a good friend is.  And then another threat to kill from Quentin.
I noticed in the credits that is said Mrs. Minerva Trask.  How does's Clarice Blackburn rate when most of the rest don't even get their last name.

Why not enlist Angelique's help.  He has powerful evidence that she can gett what she wishes.
Wouldn't you think that Barnabas would have thought he'd need an alibi and thought it up already instead of on the spot.
As Edward talks you can see on Quentin's face that the rakish fellow has a capacity for introspection.
I also enjoyed the forshadowing of talking to Trask on the phone.
But how self centered of Quentin to think that the Devil has the time to take from his busy schedule to come to his aid.

Is this the first time we see a room in the East Wing?  It has always seemed that everything took place in the West Wing. When Angelique wanted the mirror in the prior episode, I knew, what was coming, The doppelganger.  Edward seems to be such a dunderhead, it's no wonder, that Grandmama left Judith in charge.   The scene with the children in the fire was very chilling and in the end Laura is no match for Angelique.

Grayson Hall is really good here with her glee at tormenting Quentin with his fears.  I can see why she liked playing Magda because you can see she put a lot of work into making her totally different from Julia Hoffman.
I have to say that when Barnabas reveals Dirk to Laura, that Roger Davis does his best acting as Barnabas's sprawled out limp victim.

I was particularly struck by the beauty of the scenes with Quentin and Angeligue at the Old House.  I was reminded of the story Barnabas told Vickie of the building of the house and in this time one can see how that story matches the house.  I have to say that Magda did a better job of decorating and restoration  than Willie Loomis did in 1967.
It was amusing to see Quentin in the subservient role and Angelique in her domination of him.  She seems to have really come into her own sense of self confidence in this time.   And as Pansity noticed our old friend the Afghan turned up again!

We learn that Quentin loved Jenny when he first met her and from the expression on his face he seems sincere.  Laura is very loose with the equipment that keeps her alive and in power just as Barnabas is with his coffin.  The last scene where Laura appears to be melting as the episode fades out was a fun effect.

The book sure looked in good shape considering it had been in the grave since 1816.  I agree with Pianist that it seems implausible that someone would put the diary in the coffin without reading it.  I remember as a child playing in the old cemetery and the sunken holes from rotting coffins buried less than 50 years.  And why would Ben take the trouble to keep a diary of his life and then have it buried with him?  Why even record Barnabas' secret?  I like the struggle betwen Barnabas and Laura , but not this part of the story.   It would also make more sense if Laura, who was Barnabas' aunt, would have burned to death with her children.    I wonder why Barnabas can mesmerize some people and not others?

Laura's dress seemed very modern to me and was showing a lot of skin for a person who is supposed to be a proper lady even though she's not.   Laura's speculation about Barnabas being a creature of the night and then that he's not seen during the day and  then leading to his disappearing and her realization that he too is not human was very dramatic to watch.   It seemed to easy to find Ben Stokes diary at the old house.   When I saw Ben's coffin, I thought, it seems a little small for the Ben Stokes I recall.

Laura is back and that's always good.  Barnabas now decides the reason why he is here is because of Chris because there is a werewolf at Collinwood in that time.  Apparently saving David has flown right out of his mind, but then between Rachel, Angelique, Charity and Laura he has a lot of women on his mind.

I had watched the interview with the actress who played Hannah Stokes before I read the article and she stated that she knew the Halls and was a friend of Graysons.  She remarked that Sam had been sending her husband, who was in the theatre world, plays and that they were not up to par so when he talked about being a playwright as preferred over being a mere daytime t.v. writer I had to laugh.

At the werewolf runs out we are able to see a person off to the right appearing to be waiting to go onstage in another scene.
I often wonder, who if anybody, was in charge of continuity.  They must have had someone checking scripts as they came in  since they had different writers assigned to them.   One would think that there would be some side effects to Barnabas' control over Charity. but there are none and one would think that Barnabas would have seen this as a perfect oppurtunity to keep an eye on Trask since he was so concerned with Trask on meeting him.  He could have at least ordered Charity to be kind to the children.
Beth seems remarkably calm considering that her lover is cursed as a werewolf.
