Current Talk '08 I / Re: Roger - a neglected gem
« on: April 29, 2008, 03:20:03 AM »
I have to agree with Magnus Trask on my perception of Roger  in my original viewing which started after Cassandra disappeared from the scene.  Everyone in our neighborhood watched the show and then we would reinact or make up new stories using the characters and nobody wanted to be Roger.  I got stuck being him when I wasn' t David.  When our local PBS station began to show the Barnabas episodes, I could see there was more to Roger and now seeing the Beginning, I think, what a wonderful character he is.

It seemed that this story was borrowed from the plays  Another Part of the Forest and The Little Foxes  and Judith was based on Regina and was not meant to be sympathetic.   The marriage to Greggory was probably based on another movie like  Sudden Fear with Joan Crawford so then we are expected to feel sympathy towards her plight.  I can remember being satisfied with the unltimate payoff of this storyline the end of 1897.

It always give me a laugh when they shut the drawing room doors to have a supposedly private conversation and then someone will run in to listen outside the door.  Julia was just doing it in a 1968 episode.

Drinking coffee was a staple of  early soaps that DS used.  It was a way to get characters together to talk about storyline points to fill in the audience in the days before VCR's
I really am enjoying the early shows as I started watching the show when  Nicholas brought Angelique out of the coffin as a vampire in it's orignial run.  I'm looking forward to the  Laura storyline having only seen the  ending on videotape.

The only breaks the actors got were when they didn't appear on the show.  For example when Elizabeth was  presumed dead, she was really off on a vacation or doing another project.

I really like 1841 Parallel time also.  I seemed to be the next step in the story  after Barnabas realized he loved Angelique to pair up Lara and Jonathan in a love story.  John Karlen and Nancy Barrett were good together and I was a bit tired of the Faye's by this time so Melanie was a nice change.

Mrs. johnson wasn't there in the beginning, only Matthew, and I somehow doubt for all he did, Elizabeth would have trusted him to pick out her wardrobe.  My bet is she mail ordered or had them brought to her house where she could pick them out herself and have them tailored.

I dug up these neilson ratings from an online encyclopedia that has ratings for all the soaps year by year I would assume that except for the debut episode these are yearly averages
Dark Shadows debut 4.1
66-67  4.3
67-68 7.3
68-69 8.4
69-70  7.3
70-71 5.3

Josette appearing to Barnabas and their deciding that after all this time they should let each other go.  Even with KLS leaving the show, there was no need to end his obsession with her that was a major part of the way his character acted.  It had been set up from almost day one that Josette was the spirit who looked after the Colllins family and kept them from harm and to suddenly end that made no sense.  I suppose that Dan Curtis was peeved that KLS was leaving and wanted to wipe her out of the scene and then begin Barnabas's new obseession with Roxanne, but it would have made more sense if  Barnabas had met Roxanne and she had reminded him of Josette as most other women he pursued did.

Considering how some nights last for weeks and that when Vickie was in the past no present time elapsed, Carolyn shoud probably still be seventeen.

In the storyline, so far, Sam thinks that Betty might have been a daughter or niece of the bulter and even Liz who should know says this.  This  makes one wonder if they had been plannihng a split personality  storyline like that was later used for Gillian Spencer on One LIfe to LIve whose character was much like Liz's.

having just rewatched the end of 1840 , it was Spoiler:
very anti-clamatic with Gerard shot and the head turns to skull.  One would think that Judah would go back into the head or possess someone else.

There are so many, but bringing Roger Davis back as Ned was way up there.  I can still remember his showing up at Collinwood and thinking "Not again."
