In Stuart Little's classic book on Off-Broadway from the early 1970s, Powell's performances opposite Anne Meacham are highlighted as great moments in mid 20th century theatre history.  It was reading this that gave me an insight into Powell's significance as an actor.

I thought the short reference to DS in the obit was pretty much par for the course, given how people in the media tend to portray the series.  And frankly, I would prefer "camp classic" over "low budget soap opera."

Fascinating to learn that he was from Belmont, Mass.  And Thayer was from Medford.  Wonder who else in the cast came from Mass.

I really enjoyed tonight's slideshow from episode #99, particularly the shot of Carolyn and Vicki chatting in the drawing room while Mrs Johnson's sharp ears eagerly absorb every word for her report to Burke.  Again, there's something about the composition that marks it as of the first year and how much realness the  production unit put into giving these characters regular, normal lives.

MB, that's a fabulous gallery of shots, and thanks for including Angelique's lustful vamping of Barn--that storyline came up early on in my viewing of the series, and made a big impression on me.  It's almost as if DS was doing a tribute to Hammer horror, and actually ahead of the game in one respect--it wasn't until 1970 that Hammer really introduced the prototype of the lustful, ruthless blonde female vampire, as incarnated by Ingrid Pitt in The Vampire Lovers.

I enjoyed the glimpse of Lorna Bell (aka Mrs. Chris Pennock), too.  I wish Lorna had been allowed to strut her stuff a little while longer--seems as if she would have been a fun character, somewhat in the Suki Forbes vein, although the actress seemed a lot less polished at this point in her career than was the deft and vixenish Jane Draper.

Ah yes, you're looking at the new show that MB switches in around 7 p.m.  I am saving those pictures for a bedtime treat.

I LOVE the Carolyn/Julia stuff and of course TOTALLY AGREE that it is better than heroin, better even the two sticks of land o'lakes lashed together in a rough-hewn manner.

When Carolyn starts talking about dressing for dinner, that whole scene just takes a detour into some weird zone all its own.  I can't imagine any other performers other than Barrett and Hall pulling that off. 

Solid platinum, just like Miss Carolyn's hair conditioner....

I would be surprised if at the very least Sam had not done a story/treatment for "hoDS 2" figuring from his experience with DC that at some point DC would turn to him and say, "OK, can you get the script to me for the new movie by the end of the week?"--and if he had some ideas, he'd want it covered.  As a sometime writer myself, I know that's what I would have done in his shoes.

So, we inch closer to seeing WB finally giving the green light for the feature film disc release.  The main good thing about having the release tied to the big Depp/Burton project is that it means that the suits will want it as a real release, not something they just casually toss out to online consumers in their "archival" project for which they would be unlikely to have much, if any of a real budget line. 

I'm afraid a lot of the fans here don't understand that even when Burton has delivered the completed movie with its post-production, there could be a SUBSTANTIAL wait before the studio shoehorns it into one of the hot release weekends on their calendar.  As I've mentioned before, I well recall how Firefly fans had to wait six months for the release of the feature film version when the studio decided that the release date that had been announced for months would conflict with some other megabomb release date.

The military industrial entertainment complex of the 21st century is often tiresome terrain to navigate... one of the many reasons why I don't miss television.

Loving today's further selection of scenes from Bangor '66.  The look on Roger's face upon receiving Vicki's phonecall is priceless.

And meanwhile, in 1968 Julia is wearing that fabulous blue dress.  I know some people really do not like the dress, but I think it goes so well with our pale titian-haired beauty.
