Julia, this snapshot also gave me my first look at Carlotta's earrings.

She is so utterly GLAM!

Worshipfully,

G.

PS. Mad Scientist, it's funny that you and I have the same avatar.  It's giving kind of a Hitchcock flair to this interchange.

Barn:  Remember SOMEBODY, Julia!
Jules:  Oh-ho-ho-ho-hohoho NO-ho-hohohoho!  BARN-a-bas!

cheers,

G.

Mad Scientist, thanks for your thoughts.  Interesting about Sweeney Todd.  I had the impression from the trailers that there was an awful lot of the trademark Burton candy-colored chop-suey fleecy-flossie flying about... and it was a musical...

Whatever.  As long as the 1970s feature films come out on disc restored and with extras, I'll be a happy fan. They can totally shred what's left of the Franchise at that point as far as I am concerned...  I wasn't a fan of the WB pilot and I suspect that Depp Shadows will make that look like a bit of quiet noir realism...

cheers, G.

I loved the gorgeous close-up of Carlotta on display here earlier this weekend.  Beautiful work, MB.

I know it doesn't do any good to post this, but a few nights ago I was watching a bit of the new Sherlock series on pbs.org and it suddenly hit me that Benedict Cumberbatch would make a perfect Barnabas Collins.  The lighting, the coat, the hairstyling for Sherlock all would be ideal for a re-conceptualization of Barnabas.  Of course Cumberbatch would have to dial the whole manic genius thing WAY down for Barn but he is clearly a highly skilled actor...

He just seems to have more of "that Barnabas edge" to me than Depp.  Of course, I am clearly the only fan who thinks this, so...

I have the feeling that Depp Shadows could very well be "whimsical."  Whimsy seems to be a frequent feature of Tim Burton's work.

Thanks for the link.  I had no idea he was still alive.

In Stuart Little's classic book on Off-Broadway from the early 1970s, Powell's performances opposite Anne Meacham are highlighted as great moments in mid 20th century theatre history.  It was reading this that gave me an insight into Powell's significance as an actor.

I thought the short reference to DS in the obit was pretty much par for the course, given how people in the media tend to portray the series.  And frankly, I would prefer "camp classic" over "low budget soap opera."

Fascinating to learn that he was from Belmont, Mass.  And Thayer was from Medford.  Wonder who else in the cast came from Mass.

Current Talk '10 II / The not-so-secret Weapon of Lieut. Forbes
« on: November 11, 2010, 06:18:37 PM »
I see that those gloriously tight trousers of Lieut. Forbes have returned for their annual appearance... I think of it as the Miracle of the Pants ...

Unlike a certain character in Spinal Tap, Joel Crothers had no need of anything encased in foil to make his mark in this role!

Ah, the memories...

cheers, Gothique

I really enjoyed tonight's slideshow from episode #99, particularly the shot of Carolyn and Vicki chatting in the drawing room while Mrs Johnson's sharp ears eagerly absorb every word for her report to Burke.  Again, there's something about the composition that marks it as of the first year and how much realness the  production unit put into giving these characters regular, normal lives.

MB, that's a fabulous gallery of shots, and thanks for including Angelique's lustful vamping of Barn--that storyline came up early on in my viewing of the series, and made a big impression on me.  It's almost as if DS was doing a tribute to Hammer horror, and actually ahead of the game in one respect--it wasn't until 1970 that Hammer really introduced the prototype of the lustful, ruthless blonde female vampire, as incarnated by Ingrid Pitt in The Vampire Lovers.

I enjoyed the glimpse of Lorna Bell (aka Mrs. Chris Pennock), too.  I wish Lorna had been allowed to strut her stuff a little while longer--seems as if she would have been a fun character, somewhat in the Suki Forbes vein, although the actress seemed a lot less polished at this point in her career than was the deft and vixenish Jane Draper.

In the shot included in the slideshow, Carolyn's attire has a very Addams Family look to it, at least in the big scene in the foyer with Julia.  I'll have to take another look at the episode soon.

Love the shot of Liz grilling Vicki upon the latter's return from Bangor.  And then the whole Betty Hanscomb kabuki.  Grand stuff!

Ah yes, you're looking at the new show that MB switches in around 7 p.m.  I am saving those pictures for a bedtime treat.

I LOVE the Carolyn/Julia stuff and of course TOTALLY AGREE that it is better than heroin, better even the two sticks of land o'lakes lashed together in a rough-hewn manner.

When Carolyn starts talking about dressing for dinner, that whole scene just takes a detour into some weird zone all its own.  I can't imagine any other performers other than Barrett and Hall pulling that off.

Solid platinum, just like Miss Carolyn's hair conditioner....

Today's slideshow is so cool!  First, we get episode 96 and a superb performance from Louis Edmonds in what really does incarnate the original Art Wallace concept of Roger Collins--the real monster of Collinwood.  That scene in the hut has a nail-biting suspense to it that really stands out.

Then, one of Julia's legendary showdowns with Nicholas Blair.  Every time fans kvetch about the Adam and Eve storyline and how much they hate it, I remember that that storyline gave us such classic, iconic moments as these.

And finally, Judith teaches the good Mr. Gregory Trask that revenge IS a dish best served cold.  Joan is so mind-blowingly fabulous in these scenes!  What class, and what utterly delectable gloating!  I originally wrote evil gloating but it was unquestionably an act on the side of the angels to remove Trask from the scene...

Current Talk '24 I / Re: hoDS/NoDS DVD Release?
« on: November 08, 2010, 06:50:24 PM »
I would be surprised if at the very least Sam had not done a story/treatment for "hoDS 2" figuring from his experience with DC that at some point DC would turn to him and say, "OK, can you get the script to me for the new movie by the end of the week?"--and if he had some ideas, he'd want it covered.  As a sometime writer myself, I know that's what I would have done in his shoes.

So, we inch closer to seeing WB finally giving the green light for the feature film disc release.  The main good thing about having the release tied to the big Depp/Burton project is that it means that the suits will want it as a real release, not something they just casually toss out to online consumers in their "archival" project for which they would be unlikely to have much, if any of a real budget line.

I'm afraid a lot of the fans here don't understand that even when Burton has delivered the completed movie with its post-production, there could be a SUBSTANTIAL wait before the studio shoehorns it into one of the hot release weekends on their calendar.  As I've mentioned before, I well recall how Firefly fans had to wait six months for the release of the feature film version when the studio decided that the release date that had been announced for months would conflict with some other megabomb release date.

The military industrial entertainment complex of the 21st century is often tiresome terrain to navigate... one of the many reasons why I don't miss television.

The blue dress definitely deserved to be in there.  I can't believe the gorgeous grey herringbone tweed coat ranked below some of the other things on that roster, particularly that nubby orange horror.

My absolutely favorite thing she ever wore is this scarf from the summer of 1970.  She only wore it for one half of an episode which makes me wonder whether it might have been a personal item of clothing.

I also love the dark green dress with a beautifully embroidered scarf that she wears in the scene where she hypnotises Daphne, also from the summer of 1970.

I read somewhere, in some fanzine, a theory or statement that a deliberate decision was made after Parallel Time 1970 to make Julia's look more feminine and glam as an eventual launch for a full-blown romance with Barnabas.  Since the show was canceled and Frid was already making signs of potentially leaving in Nov.-Dec. of 1970, we'll never know.

Loving today's further selection of scenes from Bangor '66.  The look on Roger's face upon receiving Vicki's phonecall is priceless.

And meanwhile, in 1968 Julia is wearing that fabulous blue dress.  I know some people really do not like the dress, but I think it goes so well with our pale titian-haired beauty.

It's a good day in Collinsport.

Tonight's scene selection from episode 94 again arouses poignant feelings, particularly the wonderful snapshot of Vicki and Frank having dinner. It's nice to think of the two of them in an alternate universe eventually marrying, settling down and having a wonderful family.

And from 1967, as always it's a treat to see the shot of Julia ordering Carolyn from her room.  Drama so high it's stratospheric!
