Tim Burton’s ‘Dark Shadows’ Doesn’t Suck as Much as You Remember
Sorry, fans of the 1960s soap opera

No, I didn't write the article, but I've been saying for years that Helena Bonham Carter and Eva Green are two of the best things about the film...

Tim Burton has always received my praise for his version because he did the one, faithful thing, taken straight from the DS bible, something even Dan Curtis turned into heresy in his attempts to remake the show ('91 and '04 [which had his fingerprints all over it]), something to me that is sacrosanct:  Maggie Evans is the reincarnation of Josette, not Victoria.  Curtis wasn't loyal to his original work, but Burton was.

[pointing-up]  If Alexandra Moltke hadn't left in 1968 and had continued with the show, I strongly suspect that DC would have made Vicki Barnabas' obsession in hoDS and we would have seen the shift from Maggie 20 years earlier than we did with the NBC DS.

As for this film, it's sort of the best of both worlds when it comes to the Maggie/Vicki dynamic because we get Maggie Evans saying she's Victoria Winters.

(And it's funny that you say you think the '04 pilot had DC's fingerprints all over it because John Wells and Mark Verheiden made sure that DC had limited involvement with it. Even the WB got in on that act because after Rob Bowman dropped out as director, DC wanted to direct the pilot, but the WB absolutely refused to let him. But all that's a discussion best had in the pilot's topic...)

The 25 Essential Vampire Movies: Must-Watch Selection - Dark Shadows (2012)

Why do I suspect having the Depp/DS film on this list would come as a huge surprise to some - particularly the claim: "The dark twist in the story attracted a large following, becoming a trend after its release in 2012."

Dark Shadows Movie Framing Print Poster Sci Fi Horror Wall Decor

Interesting that out of all the posters for the film, they chose the one for Josette. Although I do have to admit that it's one of my favorites.

[pointing-up]  Just for the fun of it I went back today and discovered that they do have one other poster: Carolyn -

Dark Shadows Movie Framing Print Poster Sci Fi Horror Wall Decor

- so perhaps at one time they had others but they're no longer available. Or maybe not...

(However, what they do have are dozens of other framed posters related to both the original DS and the '91 series. One that's particularly good is a replica of Josett'e portrait for the original, though the cross stitch of it is better, even if it does mistakenly include the mantle clock as part of the portrait...)

Behind the scenes footage has been posted in this clip. Perhaps this is already familiar to fans of this film--I don't really follow this particular fandom so I do not know, but I'm posting this here in case it is of interest. Pretty cool to see how certain things were done.

Thanks for posting the link, Gothick.  [ghost_smiley]

There are actually two videos that feature behind the scenes B-roll footage, but for some odd reason it does't look like either of them had been linked to in this topic until you linked to that one. And it's even odder when one considers that dozens of other posts in this topic have mentioned DS2012 videos on YouTube and/or linked to them. But hey, better later than never.  [ghost_wink]

And while we're on the subject of behind the scenes stuff, the Blu-ray release of the film has a ton of it. So much that even almost 12 years later I still haven't watched all of it. Though that won't come as a surprise to anyone, now will it?  [ghost_cheesy]

I think I've mentioned here that I play the Publishers Sweepstakes various games hoping Ed McMahon will come knocking on my door (the chances of winning are less than Mr. McMahon knocking on my door even during a zombie apocalypse).  But I have won over $1,800 over time already.

Anyway, one of the games is "Quizzes" where you answer multiple choice questions to either win some money or token to put towards winning cash and prizes.  One I played today was "Movies Starting with D."  Of course, you know where this is going.  One of them was a pic of Depp as Barnabas with D___ Shadows as the clue.  It did explain, after picking the right (or wrong) answer, that the film was based on the "popular gothic soap opera from the 1960's."

Thanks for sharing, Gerard.  [ghost_smiley]

I wonder how many people knew the answer?

not many i'm sure, i saw in the past few days a video online that said Johnny Depp may do another Dark Shadows film. i didn't watch all the video but one thing that made me laugh is it said Fans are clamoring for a sequel and i thought Really? i liked not loved liked the film enough that i do have it on blu-ray and thanks to this site  when i watch it i view it as a comedy. Kinda how like Buffy fans get pissed at the (1992) film when it's entirely different than the show even though the film is a comedy with vampires. and one of my favorite films too. anyway the video gave some really good ideas in the direction they could go in.

my take i'd like to see another one but here is the thing Take the comedy out of it if they get the right script etc....  and they make it's sequel akin more to the actual show not just looking like the characters either.

it could work. do i think they will not put comedy in it? no i think it will be another comedy. but the video didn't say that it was confirmed either.

This is certainly an interesting development. I liked the movie well enough and would certainly go see a second one. Unless the cast members were contracted for potential sequels, there would probably need to be some recasting.

Who knows where the rumor of a sequel started? But be that as it may, one thing to keep in mind is that the film is a lot more popular around the world than it was in the US. Even after nearly 15 years since its release, new Web sites devoted to it, as well as new tributes to it on places like YouTube, pop up quite frequently. The film definitely has a devoted core audience. That's probably one of the reasons the new Steel Book version came out recently...
