Depp/Burton DARK SHADOWS Is In Release!!

 

DS is NOT a bomb--it did OK business.
It's absurd for Hollywood to expect every film to gross a half billion dollars--that's as ridiculous as what they spend producing these films.

DS did a bit better than expected this past weekend, bringing in $1.41 million (over the $1.36 million estimate), according to boxoffice.com.

And what's nice is DS brought in a bit more each day than was estimated - it wasn't just one day where it made more. 

And the good news was that Friday was indeed the day when DS overtook John Carter. However it's still ranked 12th for the year so far because, as expected, Snow White and the Huntsman climbed over it.

And speaking of rank, DS did indeed come in at #11 for the weekend. Who knows why so few places other than Box Office Mojo had the foresight to take Moonrise Kingdom into consideration? But hey, coming in 11th, especially when it brought in more money than was expected, is certainly not a bad thing.

Well, the movie is done at the multiplex I had been going to but it is still continuing at another one that's actually closer to me. Go figure. Looks like I'll be paying them a visit this week.

We saw it again this afternoon -- 4th time for me, 2nd time for my fiance -- and the theatre still did respectable business, with the audience audibly enjoying themselves.  As for me, I've reconciled myself with the tiny flaws that bugged me before, including the ending (though I think someone needs to teach WriterSeth the meaning of the word "bastard").  Now I desperately want a sequel, mostly because I'm left wondering:  what's going to become of the human members of the Collins family?!?

This too had me confused.  Is this part of some subplot that was cut?  Is David not really a Collins?  Is this some weird homage to the original?  What the heck is going on?   

I chalked it up to Angelique just being as disagreeable as possible.

I was impressed that I actually felt badly for her again in that last moment -- she doesn't generate the same amount of empathy I feel for LP's version of the character (and though I love Lysette Anthony, I have NEVER felt sorry for her Angelique) -- but there's something in her face in that final moment where I'm reminded of that raggedy little girl standing on the dock waiting for the Collins family to board.

Yeah, yeah, she's a psycho; I know.   

i haven't seen the flix yet. i hope it's good. but i do got a bit off topic question though. did they do a video game to this? i know for the last couple "Tim Burton" films they did one for. but did "Dark Shadows" get one does anyone know? i can't seem to find any info on this whatsover!

I think we would have heard if a video game was being released.  I'm disappointed in the lack of licensing associated with this film.I had hoped for a tie-in at least, if not a series of books.  Lost in Space was a flop, but there were about 6 teen novellas and one adult novel, in addition to the script adaptation. I believe there were comics too.

I was waiting for an influx of merchandise as well; if not in mainstream stores, at least in Hot Topic (which I would have been more than willing to drag myself across the threshold, braving the smell of decomposing plastic and sullen teenagers with shaggy dyed mullets and swoopy bangs).  I was particularly looking forward to a novelization, but I guess it's not to be.  My new hope is that this long-awaited visual guide or whatever they're calling it now will contain the shooting script.

I hope we can read the original draft by August.  I'm curious about it.  I have a feeling that Carolyn was originally an adult and those werewolf conceit pictures were based on that idea.

Monday's numbers for DS are in at boxoffice.com, and it brought in $181,043, which now brings its current domestic gross to $73,966,883. And once again, lest anyone think that Monday's amount seems like quite a fall from Sunday's amount of $392,662, it's actually pretty normal. In fact, it's one of the higher amounts brought in this year by a film in its 32nd day and playing in about the same amount of theaters that DS currently is. And, yes, once again I've prepared a list, and this one will compare DS to this year's other films in their 32nd day of release. However, like last week, I can't attach it just now because Monday's figures aren't in for all the films I want to include on the list (Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted is the culprit this time). But I'll definitely attach the list when I post the link to Box Office Mojo's chart after it becomes available.
