The weekend box office numbers are in for DS, and as expected, they have gone down a lot:

Fri. $6,826
Sat. $8,750
Sun. $7,830

Total weekend: $23,406

for a grand total now of: $79,711,678

http://boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?sortdate=2012-08-12&p=.htm

Interestingly, BOM indicates that it was only playing in 45 theaters, not 135.  And the number in the Theater Counts has changed, though I didn't notice it having been changed.

http://boxofficemojo.com/counts/chart/?yr=2012&wk=32&p=.htm

I think this makes a lot more sense, though, actually, since so few of us can find it in theaters anymore.  I'll bet someone subtracted wrong and forgot to carry a number  [ghost_embarrassed]  Hmm, I wonder, then, if this will be its last week...

The film is running it's natural course as all films do. With a worldwide gross of $240 million, it's done fine.

Not surprisingly, DS is not playing in Brownsville, TX on Friday. Thursday it's showing at 11:40 and 5:30.

Very true indeed.  It's just that when they initially listed 135 theaters for this week (though in retrospect, that must've been a mistake), I was kind of hopeful that there might be one last push towards $80 million.  And now I'm back to reality  [ghost_smiley]  But as you said, and as MB has demonstrated with many of his comparison numbers, it *has* done fine  [ghost_cool] [clap]

Interestingly, BOM indicates that it was only playing in 45 theaters, not 135.

That's weird - not to mention disappointing. And what's also weird is that BOM had Rock of Ages also listed in the expanding section but now it's also in the declining section.  [ghost_huh]

The interesting thing about RoA, though, is that even though it's playing in a dozen more theaters than DS (57 vs. 45), DS has more showings (410 vs.320).

And the number in the Theater Counts has changed, though I didn't notice it having been changed.

The last time I checked BOM was today at around 1:45pm ET, and at the time DS was still listed as expanding to 135.  [ghost_huh]  So, they mustn't have changed things until the actuals came in and they realized the theater count was off.

Hmm, I wonder, then, if this will be its last week...

Quite possibly. Though I have seen films hang around for several weeks even at around the current level of theaters that DS has. In fact, The Three Stooges had recently been playing in only 53 theaters, then 39 the next week, then 32 the week after, and is currently in 27 in its 18th week in release. And Mirror Mirror had recently been playing in only 59 theaters, then 56, then 39 - and this week it expanded to 45 in its 20th week in release. So, you never know.

But at any rate, thanks for posting the numbers, madscntst.  [ghost_smiley]

It's that time of day again  [ghost_wink]  DS made $3,637 yesterday, bringing the total to $79,715,315.  That's really not too bad for a drop from weekend to weekday numbers, and it easily beat out Rock of Ages.  I think that some of the numbers aren't in yet, but for what it's worth, here's box office's box office for Monday:

Does anyone know how they calculate the profits? Is it the gross amount a movie made in any given day, or are they just counting the studio's cut?  I'm not sure we know which figure is correct, 45 or 130+ theaters. Let's take today's number, $3,637.  If you divide that by 45 you get $80.82 per theater.  If 130 give or take is closer to the actual number then you get $27.97 per theater. If, as I assume, the number is based on the studio's take and not what the middlemen get, then would I be safe in estimating that 80 people or so went to see it, if it was in 45 theaters or 27 or so if it's in 130 or so. I'm assuming the studio cut must be about $1.00 and the bargain theaters play it at close to cost, figuring they'll get their profits on concessions. These are all educated guesses. Does anyone have any concrete knowlege about how it works. And I apologize if this has been addressed already. This has been a long thread, but I don't recall it being brought up.

I'm pretty sure the numbers that are reported are what a film grosses in a given day. And given what DS is currently grossing, I would definitely lean toward it currently playing in 45 theaters, particularly when boxoffice.com is also reporting that number of theaters and they're reporting Monday's per screen as $81.  [ghost_wink]

(And speaking of per screen, Monday's per screen for Mirror Mirror was only $7! I don't know if I've ever seen such a low per screen for a major studio film - even one in its 20th week of release!  [ghost_shocked])

I finally got the chance to track down the grosses for the missing films during the week last week, and with that info I was able to determine DS' rankings for last week. It ranked 31st on both Monday and Tuesday and it ranked 36th on both Wednesday and Thursday, so that definitely helps to explain how it was ranked 33rd for the entire week.

Not surprisingly with the decrease in theaters, DS slipped down several places from last week's 13th weekend list when it comes to this week's list of the films still in theaters for a 14th weekend:

* The Three Stooges did so well in its 14 weekend because it expanded into new theaters.
)

However, it's still nice to see that DS' per screen continues to outperform some of the films around it, icluding films playing in a similar amount or even many more theaters than it is. What's also interesting to note is that of the 18 films that have so far made it to a 14th week in release this year, only 6 are currently still in theaters, and this is how they stacked up over the weekend based on their current business:

FilmGrossTheatersWeeksPer Screen

To say that DS is outperforming Mirror Mirror in as many theaters would be an understatement. And just to show how well DS' per screen compares overall to all the wide released films in theaters currently, even though over the weekend DS ranked 47th among all currently released films, its per screen screen ranked 25th among the current batch of wide released films:

I've created the "Complete This Phrase / Fill In The Blank(s) - Dark Shadows 2012" board - and to get it started I've posted some of the screen caps that I've already made from the various trailers/TV Spots (ones different from the ones that have already been posted to the film's Caption This! board) and added set ups for them.  [ghost_smiley]

The new board can be accessed here by first reading a gentle reminder of one of the rules:
Dark Shadows 2012 Rules

And once again I hope that everyone who decides to participate on the board will have fun. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what you'll come up with because, as I said when I created the Caption This! board for the film, if any DS version is ripe for having fun with, it's this one.  [ghost_grin]

Hmmm. But you can also access the board from the BoardIndex (the forum's opening page) by clicking on the "Complete This Phrase / Fill In The Blank(s)" link opposite "Child Boards" under the "Games" boards listing, and then scrolling all the way down to the last board.  [ghost_smiley]  People are already playing.  [ghost_cool]

^^^ I always thought I wanted to play the caption game, but when I actually saw the pictures I could never think of anything good!  And then when I see what others write, I always think, "Of course!  I wish I'd thought of that!"  I doubt I'd be much better at the complete the phrase/fill in the blanks game, but maybe I'll check it out later just in case  [ghost_smiley]

On another topic, the Tuesday box office take for DS was $3,927, up 8% from yesterday, which is not surprising since Tuesdays are usually a little better than Mondays.  The total is now: $79,719,242.

Or is it that you never have the nerve to post what you think of?!  [naughty]  If so, you should really go for it. Don't be shy - especially because it all likelihood you'll be rewarded for it.  [laughing6]

And thanks for posting the Tuesday numbers. It's definitely going to be very interesting to see the theater count later today on Box Office Mojo. Though even if DS isn't listed, that won't necessarily mean it's closing because as some may have noticed, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter didn't close last Friday (it's in 130 theaters - though still limping along). It and actually several other films weren't added to the list until Monday afternoon after the weekend actuals came out.
