I remember a very vocal and significant number of fans protesting the cancellation of the show and campaigning to have it brought back.

Very true. Even some of the stars took part in the rallies in LA.

If only those same people were as vocal for the '91 DS to be a continual part of the Fests. And if we can believe postings on the Internet, the '91 DS supposedly gained a lot of fans when it was frequently rerun on the Sci-Fi Channel. But by that time the '91 show was all but forgotten so far as the Fests went.  [ghost_sad]

What will be interesting will be to see how the Depp/DS film is regarded in fandom after it's been around for 25 years. Though many of us won't be around to see it - or even if there still is an organized DS fandom...

I remember how viciously the NBC series was treated in the fanzines at the time. There was no internet to speak of at the time, so most of the discussion of the show came in the printed zines. But because of the sometimes long gap between issues, most of the criticism wasn't seen until after the show was off the air.
Most of the criticism was leveled at Ben Cross who didn't play Barnabas the same way as Jonathan Frid did. A lot of it was about the Roger/Maggie affair. But virtuality everything including the razor stubble on Michael T. Weiss came under the microscope for not being Dark Shadows enough.

did it? when? i was just there for the day Saturday.
I believe the 04 pilot aired on Saturday in the mid afternoon. It was not in the program. It may have been Friday night though. The whole thing is blurring together.

How was it? Better than you remembered? Has it held up? Do you think it would have made it if it had been aired?

Thanks for the link, MB. A nice little article, although I couldn't help noticing a few inaccuracies. For instance, Burton's animated films are not "Claymation" (such films use malleable substances such as plasticine for the figures). Also, although Tim and Helena were partnered, they neither married nor divorced. And the section about his work with Johnny Depp gives the impression that Burton brought Depp into the Dark Shadows project, while it was actually the other way around...

Yeah, well, as we've sadly lamented many times, all too often on the Internet the idea of checking reliable sources to actually get things right is a lost art. That's why on the Internet there's so much misinformation on almost any subject. Assumptions become facts. Theories become facts. Rumors become facts. And actual facts go by the wayside. After all, what place do little things like facts have?  [ghost_rolleyes]  And Burton and Depp have more than their share of misinformation about them out there...

I didn't realize until I just checked my e-mail today that yesterday this was posted on the film's Facebook page:

(And I love how for Christmas of 2014 someone posted the cast photo taken in the drawing set and captioned it with the film's tag line "Strange is relative".)

Looking at today's Burton/Depp image, I was reflecting that Depp Shadows was the only version of the story where Barnabas didn't prey on Carolyn.  But then, I don't think he went after her in the WB pilot.  It would be interesting to know if they were planning to do that storyline.

In the Burton/Depp project, it would have been so very icky if he had attacked Carolyn since to all intents and purposes, she was still a child--albeit, a very precocious one.

Gothick,

Yes, some of the fan speculation regarding the relationship between the Rev. Gregory Trask and his daughter Charity during the 1897 story line was disturbing enough.  I can see how Barnabas' possible "relationship" with Carolyn in the film could be, as you so aptly put it, "icky."

(Barn's attack on Carolyn was one of the best parts of the WB pilot!

Re: And Even Yet Another New Slideshow

And the makeup for Carolyn's wound is really quite graphic.

Very much so, Bob. However, the great literary scribe goes to some lengths to hint at a Barnabas/Carolyn romantic relationship in some of the later books

Thanks, MB. I'm so confused by whether it's Daphne or Carolyn that gets attacked at whichever point in whatever version, apart from the OS of course... my memories of the WB thing are really quite sketchy.  I know I should be really clear about it since you spent a year analyzing every page of that script but alas...

That's certainly understandable!  [nodassent]
