If you want to learn about or refresh your memory concerning the background of today's quote -

Page 30/Scene 79 - Carlotta (O.S.): 'Did you wish something, Mr Collins?'

- check out -

Dealing with the scenes leading up to and starting off with DC's script's version of Scene 79 (yes, Scenes 79 & 80 are more instances where scenes are somewhat different in DC's and Grayson's scripts):

- because, as you may have noticed, the slideshow has jumped from Scene #73 to Scene #79 (because Scenes 74-78 have no dialogue), so in order to remain filled in on what's going on, it's important to check out the post...

Is Carlotta's statement that the room was Mrs. Stoddard's when she was a little girl supposed to reassure Quentin? Elizabeth might have a perfectly good reason for haunting the house but would she have appeared as an eight year old?

I want to share the following still because, like several others for NoDS, it depicts a moment that's not really associated with the actual scene in the film -

(Click here for a 700X476 version)

- because nowhere during Scene 80 is Carlotta seen lying across the bed and looking to be in anguish. In fact, Carlotta remains calm and cool throughout. But hey, perhaps Grayson wanted to do an alternative take on things just for a photograph. Or perhaps the photographer simply wanted to showcase one of Selby's assets from just the right angle and pretended Grayson was the desired subject. We'll probably never know... [hall2_wink]

(Plus this version shows slightly more than the version shared in the Fest's 1999 Movie Calendar. Very slightly more, but still more...)

I was hoping that was Selby's asset.

[pointing-up]  Yes, as one can tell from today's screen capture in the slideshow -

- Selby wore the same clothes in the scene and at a point in the scene is in the window.

It's interesting that the quote from the script for today is:

It's interesting that the quote from the script for today is:

- and the one after it because clearly Quentin didn't see a child holding a teddy bear...

Page 30A/Scene 80 - Carlotta: 'Yes, this is a little girl's room. It was Mrs. Stoddard's when she was a child. It must have been a trick of light.'

Wrapping up DC's script's version of Scene 80, beginning with Quentin's followup action to claiming to have seen girl holding a "teddy bear":

- this post...

And given that beginning tomorrow and lasting all the way through the 18th the slideshow will be featuring material that was never even shot and, therefore, there won't be any sort of use of screen captures/stills in any of the graphics, I'm going to be previewing the next sequence from the script that does indeed appear in the film/slideshow: Scene 85, Quentin's tower flashback. I've set aside 18 stills, some of which are quite rare, and I'll be sharing them over the course of the next upcoming 15 days...

Is Carlotta's statement that the room was Mrs. Stoddard's when she was a little girl supposed to reassure Quentin? Elizabeth might have a perfectly good reason for haunting the house but would she have appeared as an eight year old?

Well, unlike the script, the film does add Quentin asking, "This was a child's room, wasn't it?" That makes the transition from Quentin's remark about seeing a child to Carlotta's seemingly pulling out of thin air the fact that the room had belonged to Mrs. Stoddard when she was a little girl seem much more seemless. Plus, Grayson made a notation in her script that she felt that while Carlotta watches Quentin exit the room the subtext is that she's thinking Quentin will understand later but he isn't ready to understand. So, she isn't about to tell him the truth yet. The remark about the room having been Mrs. Stoddard's childhood room doesn't in any way explain away anything or even reassure Quentin. In the script it comes across as something one says when one has nothing else to say. Like, well, this was a child's room, not that that really explains what you saw. But note that when Carlotta does feel that Quentin is ready for the truth (well, he demands it, so how can she avoid it any longer) she starts off by bringing up how Quentin had seen the little girl at the window...

Before we get into today's three quotes I need to mention that yesterday I forgot to point out that people should be sure to read -

Grayson's script's versions of Scenes 79 & 80:

- this post because Grayson's script's version of the sequence comprising Scenes 79 & 80 has differences from how the sequence appears in DC's script...
