N = Noir, as in Film Noir with is French for Black Film meaning a film with uses dark or fantastical story elements, and that defines Dark Shadows quit well I believe.

R = Revolutionary War, the secret room in the Collins crypt was originally used and built for the purpose of hiding guns and supplies for the American's during the war long before it became Barnabas' hiding place.
