Current Talk '06 I / Re: Least favorite DS writer
« on: February 08, 2006, 06:47:24 PM »
I am going to have to disagree with the Professor and concur with amny other here that Violet Wells was a favorite writer. When you review her episodes, the notable part is not how she moves the plot forward, from what I can tell that was usually the Sam Hall episodes, but her actual dialogue. This is especially true in 1987 when she wrote some especially good scripts for the ladies, such as that late 1897 episode where Julia and Angelique have rather a truce and talk about how they feel. Its a great scene where they realize they have more in common that in conflict on how they relate to Barnabas.
I can't remember who wrote it, it may have been from a suggestion from Dan Curtis himself, but the worst plot point was
[spoiler]the whole business about Peter Bradford's ghost seeking revenge for Jeb KILLING VICKIE somewhere in the past. Terrible "deus ex Machina".That is not a Violet Wells contribution, I'd bet![/spoiler]

I remember Clarice in "Pretty Poison" with Tony Perkins and Tuesday Weld, filmed around her DS years.  From what I read, it was filmed in Mass., so a relatively easy commute.

A belated  [occasion13] from the other side of the Shenandoah to David. Ms. Criseyde, make sure to pass along how we all wish him many more years and look forward to seeing him at the DS 40th Anniversary and "family reunion."

Of interest to DS fans, especially in the NYC area, is a retrospective of Boris Karloff films to be held this week. A great chance to see some classic films on a big screen. Here's a link to the article.

« on: February 06, 2006, 11:19:19 PM »
I have a great memory of meeting Al Lewis at his old Bleecker St restaurant, "Grandpa's Belle Gente" in 1988. He was the definition of " a real character."  He spoke to each table, took a photo with me, then waltzed into the kitchen and began yelling at the staff, mostly for the entertainment value. Actually, the food was very good and affordable by Manhattan standards. I loved the Munsters growing up and still do. I guess he and "Hoiman" are  having a blast in that great lab in the sky. A tip of the bat [blackbat] and cape to John Carradine, who according to some sources would be having cake at his 100th birthday this Sunday 2/6/06.  John, born Richmond Reed Carradine and the father of David, Keith and Robert et al,  played Dracula many times, including a vampiric appearence on "McCloud"  [batang] of all places. It's notable he played the Count in "House of Dracula" from which the concept of treating vampirism as a blood disease was cribbed. Always elegant in a top hat and possessed of a fine voice, here's a drink to his memory.  [8285]

Current Talk '06 I / Re: DS Props
« on: February 02, 2006, 08:31:12 PM »
I would love to have an original series prop, I only have two of the carts, which have musical cues on a tape that resembles an 8-track, used by DC/ABC back in the day, and a license plate from the '91 series I got at a DS auction.
I have one great prop story, I was at a non-sports card show, finishing my green cards set. A dealer said, "Hey, I have Quentin Collins ring. Wanna see it?" He pulled out a display box. I looked at it. Now this was before I had completed my video collection. I didn't recognize it as any ring I knew Quentin to wear, like the X ring in 1840, or Petofi's ring. So I passed. he wanted someting like $4-$500 for it. Years later, I was looking at one of Bobubas's photos and low and behold, there's the exact ring, on Aristede. I feel pretty certain he had somehow gotten a hold of the Stroka Aristede ring, I don't think it was a fake. I mean, its a little too obscure to fake. If I had to guess, it was passed along from a collector who probably said, "Yeah, some guy wore this on Dahk Shadohs, I think it was uh, Quentin, yeah, Quentin." Hey, if it came around again, I probably would pay $3-$400 for it. The ring was that silver piece that covered almost the whole fingure with an big Turquoise oval stone. BTW, he had an original plastic Barnabas ring from the old gum card offer as well.

Liz: Almira Gulch, just because you own half the county doesn't mean you have the power to run the rest of us! For 23 years I've been dying to tell you what I thought of you!  And now -- well, being a Christian woman, I can't ...say it!

Hey Midnite, thanks so much for posting this as text rather than just a link, as I can't access the oroginal site at work. I want to say, that as much as I love monkeys, I got the reservation monkey off my back early and already received my confirmation email back from the Brooklyn Marriott. We plan on arriving on Thursday to enjoy a full day in NYC prior to the show. I hope to see everyone there. I hope this years isn't too much chaos.
