Today's Robservations Slideshow

Love today's two-shot of Liz and Roger from 1966.

Liz looks deeply concerned, while Rog is smugly gloating--this pretty much encapsulates their respective views on David from the time of the original storyline.

today's shot of liz and carolyn from 1966 appears to feature liz during the very odd and mercifully brief moment when she trades her usual towering beehive for the weird "geisha" hairstyle.

hamalain went off the deep end with that one.

mscbryk, I was just about to comment on that!  This is a great showcase of that very dowdy hairdo poor Joan was saddled with for a few episodes.  I do love the shot overall--again, it really seems to capture something essential in Liz's troubled relationship with Carolyn during the 1966 storyline (which of course continued well into 1967).

It's too bad we never saw whichever of the local beauty salon ladies would come up to Collinwood every couple of weeks to do Liz's hair during her years of seclusion at the Great House.  I remember in the mid 1960s my Great Aunt Madleine, who was a trained beautician, doing hair on the side in her kitchen.  We'd go over to visit and the entire kitchen had that odd chemical odor from the hair products; hair-clips and newspapers were everywhere, and the gossip and chatter were at a terrific volume, and I think the radio was tuned to the latest pop hits (no doubt, the music of the Shangri-las, the Supremes, the Ronettes, and all the other wonderful artists we had back then).

It would have been great fun to see Liz venting to her pet beautician about how everyone at Collinwood was driving her nuts.

Shortly thereafter, of course, we would have cut to a scene of Liz, in pearls, drop earrings, black cocktail gown and high heels running the vacuum cleaner...

And here it is:

Yes that is one, uh, interesting hairstyle:

Thank heavens it didn't stick around. Although, as I recall, it was often seen on, um, more mature female TV characters. Why? Only the hairstylists of the time know for sure.  [wink2]

On the capture from yesterday, I was charmed by the detail of the big seashell ashtray in the Blue Whale.  That gave the scene a genuine touch of an old seaside resort in New England.  And Vicki's dress, even with the familiar sleeveless design, seemed unusual.

Great choices on these, MB!

Here's that capture from the Blue Whale from Ep #34:

And, yes, Vicki dress is something different for her. Here's a better shot of it from the current slideshow:

(Ep #34 also features the scandalous scene in which Joe catches Vicki in Burke's hotel room with him. The slut!! ... [lghy])

I've been reading these Robervations as of late. & i quite Enjoy Her notes at the bottom on the current episode that i happen to be reading. & you guys  & gals are right though the hairstyles back than & hell even NOW are & can be funny looking on some people. it's kinda like the stylist didn't know what they were doing.

i've seen some pretty bad ones on different people as i'm sure everyone here has that makes me question what made these people get that particular style? he he. but you are right of course about poor Joan, you tend to wonder what her thoughts were behind the scenes? i would have asked for a raise if i had to have a hair style like that! wouldn't you? he he

Tonight's new Robservations capture highlights how in 1966 characters in the same scene appeared to be inhabiting different seasons.  Liz's stylish matronly wool coat-dress looks perfect for a brisk Fall morning in Maine, while Vicki's summery sleeveless number (the same dress we've seen in the recent captures, which makes perfect sense because Art Wallace was still writing the series as if it were playing out in real time, one half hour per day) seems like just the thing for a hot aestival afternoon chasing after that little devil David.

I love the expressions the two are wearing in this snapshot.  Liz seems to be saying "I don't think I can bear this ghastly coiffure much longer!" while Vicki seems to be offering sympathy--"It really doesn't make you look as if you're pushing 70, Mrs. Stoddard."

A bit late, but here it is:

As for the clothes choices, apparently even the August nights are cool at Collinwood, hence Liz' outfit - but Vicki must have been a lot more hot blooded than we ever realized.  [b003]

Thanks, MB.  As for Vicki, Carolyn at least was in no doubt whatsoever as to what Vicki was doing, UNCHAPERONED, in Burke Devlin's room at the Inn! (i. e., exactly what Carolyn herself had planned for Mr. D.)

so true gothick,

in an era when "does she or doesn't she?" applied to more than just haircolor miss winters certainly risked her "rep" heading in and out of mr.devlin's suite unescorted.

and yes the paisley sleeveless was something of a one-off. i believe she also wore it to the infamous "dinner party" at casa evans. much like liz's "geisha style" it never reappeared after this little batch of episodes.

and of course these pictures remind me of what an elaborate hairdo vicki was outfitted with in the early days. here it's exquisite.

as delightful as it was the massive fall was somewhat unnecessary since in later years we see that alexandra already possessed the most lustrous head of hair imaginable.

Love the two-shot of Stokes and Julia from episode 835 (1969) posted on Robservations today in the slideshow (you have to click all the way through the arrows to get to it).  Not only is it an atmospheric shot of the two (although the lighting and angle could be improved for Stokes), it somehow sums up a lot of what so fascinated me about the series back in the day.
