Current Talk '02 II / Is loving insane?
« on: September 12, 2002, 02:14:22 AM »
Ummmm, yes. Perhaps it is because I am middleaged, but I have to wonder if talk about LOVE could be made the same way today. Vicky just sounds like an ass. I know that isn't unusual for her character, but I wonder if soap operas today would have that type of love that defies all reason today?

I sincerely hope that we are past love being an excuse to act totally inappropriately. Although, I am reminded of Alexandra Moltke herself in the Von Bulow (or whatever) trial. She was testifying against him, (being now out of love), and justifying her former silence with "Haven't you ever been in love?" This was still a while ago, though, I wouldn't call it current.

"He's here." "He's gone." "He's an astral manifestation!"

The part of Jeffy Clark will be played today by an annoying light.

Try as I might, I can't see anything in the show itself that would lead people to think of him as annoying--his quirks are no weirder than those of the rest of the cast...

If you watched the scenes with Jeffy & Dr. Lang, and STILL don't see it, then I guess you never will! And that's OK. Personally, I love your avatar with the hilarious comment underneath it.

I admit I am partially influenced by being part of this board this time around. Last time (w/o board) I was just happy to see the ol' Smith & Jones guy, I loved that show and I had missed that part of DS when I was a kid. This time, I saw what people were carrying on about. I didn't "take" with Betsey though, I suspect what people hate is that she isn't Alexandra Moltke, or imitating AM. Which I don't see as being her job and I think she performed decently. I hated Anthony George every time I've watched him play Burke, even though I came in late and he was the first Burke I knew. I hated Amanda Harris and the word hate doesn't even cover my feelings for the character of Adam. I had no idea that others might agree with me on those. I wasn't bothered by Hallie Stokes, so it will be interesting when she is on again, to see if the popular opinion overtakes me!

_Last year at the zoo a bat landed on the outside of our booth. Being an adventurous sort, (and not wanting it out there with kids that could run up to it) I decided to try to catch it in a box. It managed to just escape me, but the poor dear was obviously not well.  That night on the news I heard how an unusually high number of them in the area had rabies and to leave them alone! Next time I see one in the daytime acting sluggish, I will do just that!

On the topic of anti-depressants, I have mixed feelings about the decision of drug companies to advertise their product, but in their defense I'll admit I have several friends that have benefitted tremendously from these drugs; loved ones are ALIVE because of them.  What I find disgusting is the amount of clinical depression that goes undiagnosed and/or untreated, but the ads have at least aided in bringing this serious problem into the open where it can be discussed.

And what I've seen of the medications that treat ADD, ADHD and other illnesses affecting our children has made me think that in many cases they're a godsend.  Resorting to medication in these instances is never an easy process for caring parents, and I agree with you completely that meds aren't appropriate in all cases of hyperactivity, but I disagree with another of your statements because just as depression is not caused by a lack of self-discipline, behavioral disorders in children are not caused by a lack of parental discipline.

Oh my God, Midnite, I can't tell you HOW much I appreciate this post. I know the previous sentiments are the popular ones today, and the lack of understanding is actually quite well intentioned. As the parent of a child who desperately needs his medications, I can say that having someone understand is unusual.

Some parents MAY be manipulating the system for learning disorders, I really have no idea. But I have never once heard a parent that was anxious to use medication for their child. If anything, the child loses much precious time in terms of education and self esteem while the parents fight the idea and blame the teachers/school for "not wanting to teach". (My son's teacher is a living saint, God bless her). Thank you for a thoughtful response on a subject I tend to get emotional about.

They are both pretty gosh darn creepy. I'm going to go with Gerard though, because he never got any better.

Quentin may have been scarier to start with, but, fortunately for us he loses the vote because he went on to become a real character.

Is that radio show on the air in KCMO??

BTW--did i tell you i'm originally from Russell, KS. . .way out there in nowoman's land???

And you actually LEFT there? My nephew was in the big city of Hays for several years.

Rush lived here, but I can't remember where he started in radio. May have been in KC though. I don't think Adam got out of the East. I think his program is too intense to get its start here, he must have gone to NYC!

Isn't it funny though, that my generation of promiscuous, drunken pot heads looked down on the older generation for popping pills? Geez, where did we get off? Mother's Little Helper is the perfect example of the attitude. Now that I'm in A.A., I know it is ALL THE SAME. Heck, I knew it then, I raided my mom's medicine cabinet! (Please note, I regret MUCH of my youth!)

Several really good comments here. One thing has been talked about several times but I never quite made the connection. Isn't it interesting that Barney could be 25 (or so) in 1795, but it is always seen as a man in his forties in current time? I mean, he was a vampire, he shouldn't have aged! By my rough calculations, he aged 1 year for every 25 in was in the coffin. Not bad, but in thousand years, it WOULD have caught up with him!

Luciaphil, I have to assume that you have read one of my favorite Austen stories "Northanger Abbey"? The opening line is perfect for your dialogue. "Noone who had ever seen Catharine Morland in her infancy would have supposed her born to be an heroine." It is too long to continue, but points out her unlikeliness by the happiness and normalcy of her childhood and parentage.

The very thought of Carolyn being a SYT is a chuckle. Young, yes, sweet, hardly! Which may explain exactly why I was never a SYT myself. Never having been one makes them seem insipid to me. I suspect that those who peaked in high school or close to it might be those who perpetuate the idolizing of youth??? (Anybody can see how lovely AM or Kate Jackson was on the show, I'm not talking about merely appreciating an attractive age. I mean those who don't find any OTHER age attractive.) Oh, and Lara Parker was only 24 or 25 when she started the show, so I think it was her character that made her seem older. Again, hardly sweet!

Well, I especially LOVE Gerard's version, but this is what REALLY happened.

Upon leaving Collinwood, he settled in a major city. Life was hard with having to work and all, and he never did well with authority figures, so jobs were shortlived. He called a local radio program to rant and was so eloquent in his bitterness that in no time at all he had his own radio show. After a few short months of enormous local success he was offered a syndication deal. Now, he has celebrity and lots of sycophants to kiss his ass. Don't worry, the only effect that getting his way all the time has had on him is that he no longer has to kill or kidnap anyone! He can still summon plenty of venom to keep his show a phenomenal success and after all, he DOES have a face made for radio!

At the rate he is going, I would say it will be the next episode he is in. The number has been jumping drastically lately. He has definately found his acting method! [silly]

I've always, even when i was 13, thought the older women were more interesting. .they were smarter, had dripping sarcasms and probably a few lovers. . i still don't get it. .i mean I understand the 40ish writers/directors/producers head turn for SYTs but in reality. . wouldn't you rather have a woman who **knew** what to do rather than a girl who probably blushed, giggled and had very few lascivious thoughts?? I don't see Maggie or Vicki having any **adult** themed thoughts. . they were too pure. . so whats with men wanting pure women?? The whole madonna-whore thing escapes me. . .[sconf]  As a woman. . .i might turn my head to a tight-jeaned young stud but i certainly don't want to bother because they DON'T know what to do and usually do it waaaay too fast. . .catch my drift. .why bother.  I much prefer the experienced, thrashed by love guy, who has patience and sensitivity .. oh yeah and a prescription for Viagra. . [evilb]

Well, honestly, I'm with you. Still, I haven't found intelligence to be a real draw with the guys I'VE been around.  How I wish it were! (And yes, I have been around the wrong guys, but where are the other kind?) Maybe it's because many do their thinking with their "little" head and don't want to be outsmarted?

He certainly does seem to enjoy his work! The unbridled glee at his love scenes does not appear to be just acting and he isn't THAT good of an actor anyway. He strikes me as a pervert about it. No wonder his co-stars seem to be thinking "Ewwwwww!"

I can't believe we've been watching this go-round from the VERY beginning and now we are already to QUENTIN. How exciting! Jonathon Frid certainly saved the show, but David Selby breathed new life into it.

I LOVE Beth. I do hope we will get some new avatars? Pretty please with sugar on it?

Interesting theory and I think there is something to it. I don't think romance novels with overweight, middleaged women as heroines would go over nearly as big!

However, for myself only, I found Barney VERY attractive when I was 13. I thought him SO romantic and appealing and wanted him to whisk me away, though maybe not to the cellar room... Watching for the 3rd or 4th time as a 47 y.o., I don't find him that attractive. I think it is mainly that the tortured soul is boring to me now. Jonathon Frid himself at the age when he played Barney is more than OK, it isn't that.

Unfortunately for me, when I am out and looking at people, my eye always seems to spot men in their early thirties as hotties. I hardly ever see a guy my own age/older and think "Wow!" I can think of exceptions
like Sean Connery and David Selby, OF COURSE! But, I would say that the thirties for me were the best age and that is what I still seem to "go for", at least visually.

I personally think there are a lot of issues to lead men to want a SYT, just as there as issues for the SYT to want a man old enough to be her father. For the man, insecurity in his sexuality (not wanting a "better man" to have been there first), a tendancy to objectify the woman rather than looking for someone with whom he can actually relate, and, quite possibly a LACK of sexual desire that needs the height of physical perfection to jump start the libido. For the woman, unresolved feelings about her father, or an absentee father. That's my armchair analysis anyway. I don't know if anyone else is interested, but I find this stuff fascinating!
