Did anybody find it hilarious how phony it looked when the bat came in David's room. I thought it was funny. I wonder if they made it that phony on purpose to give the audience a good laugh.

Probably not (intentionally, anyway). Of course, it has to be kept in mind that this was the 1960's, and some of the DS "special effects" really weren't any worse than, say, the Twilight Zone or other shows of that era. Still, I agree, they do make one cringe, lol. I always thought that bat was the absolute worst until the
Leviathan storyline and that ridiculous shadow that Chris Pennock was always running from. That gets my vote for the worst DS special effect.
The bat puppets were by Bil Baird, who was one of the most famous puppeteers of the 1960s. He did a fair amount of TV work. I think he may have made the Kukla and Ollie puppets for Kukla Fran & Ollie, but I'm not sure. I guess he was better known for his work with marionettes (of which the bat was one).

I'm awfully fond of that bat. I just love its various appearances over the years. There's something soooo cute about it!

The giant spider that menaced Amanda "Quuuuwwwwentttinnnnn!!!!" Harris was cheesier, I think. I still think the funniest "special" effect was the posthumous appearance of Paul Stoddard in the Leviathan storyline. THAT was a doozy. And the stuffed dog menacing poor Willie Loomis during the Dream Curse, complete with canned growling, was a pretty unfortunate beastie as well.

Dontcha just love Dark Shadows??? I know I do.

what about that ridiculous skull in the dream storyline? They are both right up there at the top to me.

Oh, I think that bat in David's room was downright realistic compared to
the ghastly "shadow of the gingerbread man" pursuing Jeb Hawkes and the amazing shrinking bat that Jeb releases from a cage to reinfect Barnabas. And that IS saying a lot, isn't it?
Yes, I'm sure we can come up lots of other cheesy examples. But it's all part of DS's charm!
