Lovely scenes with Paul and Carolyn. I really like this part--Carolyn is so fiercely loyal to anyone she loves. David is now almost as tall as she is.

A fly orbits Philip's head as he and Megan stare down at whatever is in the cradle. Megan seems to know whenever "he" is hungry. The jar of baby food in her hand seems to indicate that "he" eats human-type food. Somehow that seems creepier to me than if "he" ate only bugs or sawdust.

Later that evening, Carolyn is wearing her sky-blue silk peignoir when she opens the door for Philip. She wants to know if she can use the shop as a temporary message center. This is fine with him, because they were going to ask her to help on a regular basis. (Yes, Carolyn Collins Stoddard has a real job, of sorts!) Are you sure you need someone? Carolyn asks with genuine delight. With a smile that stops well short of his blank and staring eyes, Philip says, We couldn’t be more sure we need someone, or more sure that it should be you.

Barn's instructions to the Todds don't take into account the fact that "he" will have to have a name. When Carolyn coos over the invisible baby, Megan fumbles for a name and comes up with Joseph.

David and Amy are in town with Mrs. Johnson and stop by the shop while Mrs. J. buys wool. David says his father isn’t sure that working in a shop is proper for a Collins, but Amy thinks it’s “neat” to work in a shop with such fun things to play with. She admires a doll, while Carolyn shows David a couple of wooden Continental soldiers (perhaps former members of Barnabas’s boyhood regiment). Carolyn busies herself with work while the kids look around. Paul Stoddard enters the shop; David recognizes him from last night but says nothing. Paul of course doesn’t know the children and goes straight to Carolyn. She makes up an excuse to send “Mr. Prescott” (also the name of Vicki’s 1795 jailer!) to the back room while David watches interestedly. Carolyn suggests the kids go back to Mrs. Johnson. Amy doesn’t want to stand around watching while Mrs. J. picks out wool, but strangely David agrees with Carolyn and leads Amy out. Paul comes back out, and Carolyn tells him who the children were and that David saw them the night before but doesn’t know who he is. Have you spoken to your mother yet? Paul asks anxiously. No, Carolyn says, she’s in bed with a headache. Don’t wait too long, Paul frets. What’s wrong? she asks. Is there something you didn’t tell me last night? Paul says no, a little too hastily, but Carolyn doesn’t notice. She promises to speak to her mother tonight. Paul kisses her again as he leaves.

The antique shop has several clocks in its inventory, but they all show different times when Megan, seemingly in a daze, closes the window shutters. Equally mechanically, Philip asks her where the Book is. I thought you took it, she replies. What will we do if it’s gone? she asks fearfully. They decide to search the shop.

The Book of the Naga is in David’s room at Collinwood. Why did you take it? Amy asks. After some hesitation, he tells her, Carolyn said my father would have to pay for anything we accidentally tore or broke. I ripped a page, and that’s why I took it. I don’t think it’s worth a lot, Amy opines. It’s not even in English. Please don’t tell anyone, David says. I’m afraid my father will be angry. Amy hands him the book. You’d better return it if you know what’s good for you, she says smartly. When he hesitates, she asks, Are you going to return it? I don’t know, David answers worriedly as he stares down at the book.

The Book hasn’t turned up at the shop, and Megan is getting distraught. Someone must have taken it, she says. It has no value to anyone but us, Philip reminds her. Whoever took it must pay with his life, Megan says flatly. She suddenly snaps out of her Leviathan stupor in shock at what she has just said: You and I would never have dreamed of hurting anyone before. Philip concurs. Relapsing, Megan says, But it is all different now. We serve him. Whoever has taken “his” Book we will track down. And kill! Philip agrees, his eyes empty.........

The Leviathan box is like a Tardis--bigger on the inside than on the outside. It is able to hold the huge Book of Leviathan and a scroll.

We get our first--and last--look at the Todds’ bedroom, equipped with two twin beds pushed together. Megan has a dream in which Barnabas gives her instructions for preparing their room to be the "chosen room." Philip has the same dream. In the middle of the night he brings armloads of lumber to prepare the now empty room.

A Victrola--not Quentin's, though--is for sale at the shop. "Philip's folly"--the cradle is not, however, as Megan coldly informs Carolyn. Megan closes the shop just as Maggie arrives and admires Pansity's boa. Maggie proposes a shopping expedition followed by a stop at the BW. Carolyn feels as if something is going to happen. Maggie smiles at us.

Megan and Philip are downstairs, staring upstairs expectantly. They decide "it's time" and go upstairs.

Carolyn is still upset at her day. She opines to Maggie that the Todds regard her as a rich dilettante and decides not to go back to the shop. She is just about to leave despite Maggie’s best efforts when the stranger enters. Carolyn instantly recognizes him. She tells Maggie, That’s the man who was skulking around Collinwood, the same one who spoke to me near the strange altar. She is still particularly annoyed that he didn’t give her any straight answers. Alarmed, Carolyn sees he is approaching their table, but Maggie complacently suggests, You might get some answers now. The stranger greets Maggie politely. Carolyn favors both of them with a disgusted stare. Not the least upset at Carolyn’s disapproval and pleased with the success of her mission, Maggie leaves. As the stranger sits down opposite her, Carolyn says, I don’t understand any of this. The stranger replies, Well, I will admit that it is a rather strange situation... introducing yourself to your own daughter. Daughter? Carolyn asks blankly. Yes, Carolyn, the stranger answers. I am Paul Stoddard--your father........

You're right, Dom, but it was unintentional. Adam just didn't know his own strength and Sam forgave him.

Wow, MT, I don't remember that--just as well, I guess.

Once again, Megan, Elizabeth, and Maggie are all wearing gray. What gives?

Barn modestly tells the utterly unsuspecting Todds that he has "a few early American things" upstairs. Huh. He is far too pleased that Megan is mysteriously attracted to the box he brought back from wherever.

Barn's antipathy toward Chris continues as he opines to Elizabeth that Carolyn is seeing too much of Chris. I've always let Carolyn make her own decisions, Elizabeth says--except for hand-picking Joe to be her boyfriend.

The mysterious stranger watches the Old House as Elizabeth leaves. We learn that Maggie has been renting out the cottage while living at Collinwood as David's tutor. The stranger phones Collinwood. Maggie answers, and he asks to speak to Elizabeth. Elizabeth takes the phone and speaks, but the stranger seems stunned to hear her voice and doesn’t reply. Eventually she hangs up, commenting on how strange it was. The caller was a man, Maggie says He did ask for you.

Megan is delighted when Barn shows up at the antique shop and gives Megan the box as a gift. I’ll always treasure it, Megan enthuses. I will be more selfish than you and never give it away. I hope you never change you mind, Barnabas says gravely. Behind him, Philip looks at his wife with some concern.

The main room of the cottage is rather less furnished than when the Evanses called it home. Besides some nondescript chairs, we can see Sam’s portrait of Maggie’s mother and one lone easel. The stranger knocks at the door (Maggie trips on her way to open it) and asks to see Sam. Maggie doesn’t recognize the stranger but tells him, My father has been dead for over a year. She invites the stranger in. I’m truly sorry, the stranger says. Sam and I were old friends. I know you don’t remember me, but I remembers you. He marvels at being back in Collinsport and asks her about her present life. She says she’s living at Collinwood as David’s tutor. He thinks about this for a moment, then asks her, Could you be as good a friend to me as your father was? Because I need a friend, Miss Evans--desperately. Maggie agrees to help him for her father’s sake. Tell me about the people at Collinwood, the stranger requests--especially Carolyn. Maggie gets protective of her friends and hints that she would like to know the stranger’s name, but he asks her to answer his question about Carolyn. I love Carolyn, Maggie replies. She’s nice and kind and generous and charitable.... Unoffended, the stranger laughs as he realizes she’s stringing him along. I don’t understand why you want to know, Maggie says. I don’t see how I can help you. I would be willing to tell you, the stranger proposes, if you could keep the secret. I’m not sure I want to know it, Maggie says warily. You seem to me to be the one who I should tell, the stranger replies. I don't know why, Maggie says. Well, you are the only one that there is, the stranger tells her: That's the first reason. Now, all I have to consider is... can I trust you, Miss Evans--as I would have trusted your father?

Philip is closing the inside shutters as Megan once again examines the box. She thinks they should open it and Philip agrees, but it seems to be locked. He tries to force it with a screwdriver but has no luck. When he goes to find a better tool, Megan picks up the box again--and tells Philip, I hear something _inside_ the box that sounds alive. Philip doesn’t believe it, but Megan is sure. Philip has given up and instead opens the envelope that Barnabas gave them, ostensibly with a list of things he’s willing to sell. But inside Philip finds a key. Megan reaches for it, but Philip hesitates. He says worriedly, I’m afraid that if we open the box, things will never be the same. We have to, Megan says. After a moment, Philip agrees. He turns the key in the lock and cracks the lid open. At once they hear a sound like air escaping, or a deep sigh. What was that? they ask one another. Neither one knows what it was, but it sounded as though something came out even though they saw nothing. Now practically beside herself with excitement, Megan urges Philip to open the box completely: Once and for all, she says, let’s find out what’s in it. They stare inside....

Ah, Dom, I think I know the resistant one you mean. Good observation!

I always liked both Todds because they seemed to be such plausible, actual people like you'd find in ordinary life. Bernau did have a wonderful speaking voice, and I think this was MW's best role--after Jenny, of course.

It's a good thing Julia hasn't lost her smarts or her keen powers of observation. She will need both.

Carolyn confides to Barn that more than once she felt as if she were falling in love with Chris. That would be a mistake, Barnabas warns her, and gives her a silver pentagram--yes, MT, seems a bit late for that.

Fortunately, Philip starts the day by wearing a new, normal cardigan. Once again, Julia is wearing her green tweed coat, but Carolyn, Megan, and Elizabeth are all wearing gray tweedy outfits. What gives?

Julia seems determined to support the antique shop and buys what looks like a little silver snuff box. Carolyn arrives, announcing she needs a silver chain for her pentagram and accepts Philip's invitation to dinner.

Julia makes a beeline for the Old House and asks Barnabas (wearing his blood-red velvet smoking jacket), Why did you give Carolyn the pentagram? You know why, he replies--to protect Carolyn from Chris. I can handle Chris, Julia insists. Chris may change at any moment, Barnabas reminds her--whether the moon is full or not. I’ll take him back to Windcliff, Julia proposes. Barnabas dismisses her concerns. I am busy with something else, he says. Too busy to hear about Quentin? Julia asks. This gets his attention fast. She tells him about the telegram and Mr. Corey. You are so irrational, Barnabas scoffs. She reminds him about the significance of the Tate portrait of Quentin. I am sure Quentin is alive here and now, Julia insists, since Beth saw him in 1969 (when Petofi had her go into the I Ching trance). Tate told me the portrait was destroyed in the studio fire, Barnabas says. Julia counters, Tate could have been lying (something Barnabas doesn’t seem to have considered, even before he became a cult zombie). Quentin could be alive and buying up every Tate he can find in search of his portrait. Barnabas simply goes over to the coat rack and gets her coat (actually, he takes his own first and has to put it back!). You’re making too much of the telegram, he says. I’m sure the portrait was destroyed and that Quentin is long dead. Now please leave, he says, helping her on with her coat. I have other things to do. Julia asks, You don't really care whether Quentin is alive or dead, do you? Barnabas! Oh, Barnabas, what has happened to you? After Julia leaves, Barnabas briefly places his hands on the Leviathan box, looks off into the distance and says, It is time. He sits in the chair next to the fireplace and seems to fall asleep as he has a vision. The Leviathan box starts breathing again, and is surrounded by flames. The flame turns out to be burning in a brazier next to the Leviathan altar, where Barnabas draws a circle in the air to summon Oberon. Oberon returns the greeting, addressing Barnabas as his master. Tell me, man of earth, Barnabas asks, how will I know the chosen ones? Oberon says, One will wear the sign of the Naga (i.e., the four-headed snake). You will hear a knocking at your door that will wake you from your sleep. When you open the door, you will know them and trust them. I will lead them to the mysteries, Barnabas agrees. He has fallen asleep in the chair and is awakened when someone knocks on the door. The chosen ones, he thinks to himself. My opening the door will seal the fate of many......

I've always thought that Sabrina was being treated by Dr. Reeves, whom we first met in the very first story arc. Dr. Reeves treated Roger after his car accident long ago but has survived by wisely staying off screen ever since.

If Julia can be both an expert on blood and vampirism and a psychologist, I suppose Stokes can also have medical interests besides his expertise in spells and the occult.

Even now, Sabrina refuses to betray Chris. Maybe Julia prescribed enough sedatives for Chris that he simply was locked into a padded room to sleep them off when the moon was full. How much time is supposed to have gone by in 1969 between Barn's departure to 1897 and his return? Do we know?

Barn is distant and cold to everyone, including his "dear friend," Julia, who is so overjoyed to see him back in 1969 that she doesn't realize he's given her only a perfunctory, one-handed embrace. No wonder he gives Chris the bum's rush. He gives Julia a brief account of Petofi, Quentin, and Amanda. Julia asks about the portrait. I’m very tired, Barnabas announces abruptly. He gets up and retrieves the Leviathan box from the mantel. Julia asks about it. I got it in the past, he replies. She reaches for it, but he snatches it out of her reach. You mustn’t touch this, he warns her. It happens to be very old. He sets the box on a table. Julia can’t help staring in amazement at his behavior and manner. [But if he didn’t want to draw her attention to the box, why did he put it in such a conspicuous spot and then pick it up?]

Julia excitedly tells Barnabas that she may have found a way to help Chris. Oh, yes, Chris, Barnabas replies distantly, as if Chris wasn't one of the primary reasons for his trip back to 1897. Julia says, It was impossible to keep Chris at the mausoleum, so I moved him to Windcliff, but he has just signed himself out. I have reason to believe Charles Delaware Tate is still alive. He would be almost a hundred, Barnabas says dismissively, and totally useless. Julia is arguing that they have to make sure when Chris knocks on the door and almost immediately barges right in. He brings the alarming news that Carolyn has seen Sabrina. If she talks-- Suddenly he realizes that Barnabas has returned. I desperately need your help! he says, relieved. Barnabas is just as cold to him as he was to Julia. With no emotion whatever, Barnabas says, I was just about to tell Julia my conclusion. Chris waits eagerly. I do so with regret, Barnabas adds. Chris’s face falls. Barnabas says calmly, In all the time that I was in the past, I found no solution for you. I'm afraid that there is nothing that I can possibly do for you. Chris is stricken, Julia is dumbfounded. Barnabas again pleads fatigue and goes upstairs. Hoping to make up at least slightly for Barnabas’s inexplicable behavior, Julia offers to walk Chris back to the cottage. Just outside the door, Chris says, I can’t believe he meant that. Julia answers, I don't know whether he did or not! I do know that something has happened to him. He has undergone a frightening change. There was no reason for him to lie to me! She explains, He told me that he returned from the past the same way that he went there, through the I Ching. That would mean through the cellar. But that is not possible--because I locked the cellar door from the outside. Go back to the cottage, Julia tells Chris. I will stay and get to the bottom of the mystery. I promise to explain tomorrow, but there is something I have to do here. After Chris sets off, Julia looks at the Leviathan box. I wonder why Barnabas brought that box back from the past. Julia thinks to herself. He didn’t want me to touch it. There must be something inside it--something that will explain why Barnabas isn’t himself anymore.

Quietly Julia pushes the door open and shuts it behind her as she reenters the Old House. She makes sure Barnabas isn’t about to come downstairs, then goes over to the table where he had set the Leviathan box. She hefts the box to test its weight. Gradually she becomes aware of  the sound of slow, heavy breathing--coming from _inside_ the box. She sets it back down and tries to open it. When her attempts prove futile, she spots a key on the table. She puts the key into the keyhole on the box..........

Petofi had to restore at least some of Charles's talent when he ordered him to (literally) draw Garth Blackwood back to life. So I guess some of it still remains. But it seems Blackwood was the last portrait he ever drew and he's stuck to landscapes ever since. I for one don't blame him.

I'm sure Elizabeth got rid of every reminder of Paul after
she thought she'd killed him
.
