I was impressed with the first volume and can't wait for the second.  I can't afford to buy the original comic books, so this is a great alternative.

I think you may be confusing Gabriel with Daniel.  Edith mentioned Daniel Collins and that he forced her and her husband to live at Collinwood instead of the Old House.   She also shouted out "I am not going with you Daniel!"

Edith definitely mentioned Gabriel's name.  My look at the Robservations didn't help on the subject, so it would be necessary to go back and watch the episodes (705 and 706, I think) to make sure that Edith identified Gabriel as her husband, and I'd rather not get distracted from what we're watching now.  But I think those episodes left no doubt that Edith's husband was Gabriel.

1897 Edith never mentioned her husband's name, just that he died 34 years before.  She does reference him in a very positive way.

It would be interesting to see old Daphne tell Barnabas about meeting his "grandfather" over 50 years ago and that he helped save the family and her husband from death.
Would have been great to see his reaction!

As for who died in 1863, it was definitely Gabriel, identified by Grandmama Edith as her husband

That sounds like a reasonable answer as to why 1840 doesn't exactly mesh with 1897.

This has just led me to think that 1897 Edith may have actually been married to Quentin I, who died in 1863, and she was Tad's mother (The Thaddeus Collins who fought in the Civil War) in addition to the son who had Edward, Judith, Quentin II, & Carl.

Anyway, really, I'm starting to think that the Stairway was responsible for the "temporal bubble" that this sort-of alternate 1995-1970-1840 existed in, and that once Desmond chopped it up, the bubble popped, and things went back to the way they'd been "before".   So, B&J's actions in the "past" didn't save Liz and Collinwood, but rather Desmond's chopping.

But shouldn't Edith's children be sent home from boarding school for a suitable time of mourning?

I wonder if the writers forgot that Gabriel & Edith had children by this time, one of whom is the direct ancestor of the present time family.  It might explain their killing Edith too.

Eva Green was in a great movie called The Dreamers about a teenage brother & sister in France befriending an American boy their age.  It takes place in France 1968 during the riots.

To me, this is the episode where 1840 starts to fall apart, with Edith dying.

I didn't like that they introduced Parallel Time 1841 at this point (though they probably had to get the audience adjusted to the change) as it has an intrusive feeling while watching a several month storyline wind down.

1840 is the only time travel storyline where the ending overlaps with the beginning of the next storyline.

I just got the book today, will read it soon.

I thought as the four ghosts in the present look just like they do in 1840, that Gerard must have died soon after the beheading along with the other three.

They were the last three people Quentin cared about, so Gerard probably killed them and then himself leaving no legacy for Quentin.

I thought Juadh wanted to take everything of Quentin's, and then live high on the hog in Collinwood for the rest of Gerard's life.

Since their ghosts in the present time, perhaps he means the afterlife.  After the hanging he intends to kill Daphne, Tad, Carrie, and then himself.

I like the profiles of Joanna and Daphne in the opening.   Gerard goes on about "wondrous new lands" to Daphne, which he'll show her once they're married.   Does he carry these new lands around in his pocket?   Okay, he can show her Hell... what else has he got?

When I first saw this episode, I thought Professor Stokes was brought in to be the new attorney for Quentin & Desmond.  A missed opportunity.

Poor Mr. Drew, he loses most of his family and we never even get to meet him.
