Current Talk '02 II / I'm going out on a limb here,
« on: September 05, 2002, 03:43:05 AM »
and going to say that I tried to keep an open mind today. I honestly think Betsy Durkin did a good job! Not great, but not bad enough to warrant the comments. (SORRY, Minja!)  Just have to call it as I see it. Don't get me wrong, I ain't plannin' to start a fan club. It's just that any actor coming into an established role has a totally thankless job. I thought the gal who played CaroLINE was OK too. It isn't their fault they are not the original actor! I tried to feel the same way about Anthony George, didn't work just can't stand him in the role of Burke. (He was fine as Jeremiah.) Mainly cos' he played Burke as such a wuss. I think Betsey did her best to act Vicky-like and succeeded better than we give her credit for.

I like her hair better than AM's. I don't know why, all that heavy, thick hair just looks painful to me. Somewhere in between that and Grayson's wisps would be where I want to be! (I am a wispy hair person myself and can sympathize).

I WILL acknowledge that BD can be a little shrill, but I would take her over Amanda Harris ANYDAY.....

Current Talk '02 II / "You must be related to Tom Jennings"....
« on: September 05, 2002, 03:22:43 AM »
No duh, Nicholas! Golly, that was a quick deduction, what was your first clue?

I've never been able to figure out why DB was so much better at being Chris Jennings than Tom. In today's show, he was both,  hamming it to the hilt as Tom and great as Chris. Did ya' catch the tongue wiggle? And to think that noone else ever added that quintessential thespian touch!

OK, I can understand Barney getting all protective of Vicky, nothing new there. BUT, doesn't it strike a false note when he gets on his high horse about Maggie??!!! Puh-leeze! I wish I could have bitch slapped him!

I had one of those quilted skirts in the early 70's.
(and lived to tell)

Same here! Naggie has another dress that is a clone of what I had, a window pane print, that is not check or plaid, and I forget what they were called. I was absolutely thrilled my quilt skirt for a short time.

My guess is that Grayson occasionally used her own clothing. I'm sure that her contract didn't include getting any. However, it would not have been unusual for a star of Bennett's caliber to have it written in her contract that she could have her wardrobe. I imagine she quickly snagged the better ones.

Personally, I've never agreed that Vicky looked bad in the sleeveless dresses. I think they worked better on her than the frump cardigan/skirt sets and she doesn't seem like the type for fussier styles either.

All in all, the show is a time warp back to my youth. Yes, we really DID dress like that and we thought we looked good! (Of course, when you are young enough anything looks better. Given that criteria, it is a wonder Joan and Grayson look as good as they do.)

What did she say to Adam, "Professor Stokes taught you decency"? After that, she had to be thinking "You certainly didn't learn it from us!"

My Amazon shipment went out today. I am really curious how they do on pre-orders of ones that come out when they are supposed to. But, for free shipping I get less anxious and more patient. I am excited though, I'm getting "Satan in High Heels" along with it!

I can't fathom why Martin Scorcese didn't choose to film "House of Mirth" instead of "The Age of Innocence"?  It's her finest story, in my opinion, and I'm pretty certain I've read every word of fiction Edith Wharton ever wrote.  Twice.

Did you see The House of Mirth with Gillian Anderson (of Xfiles) in it? Not having read the book, I can't compare. She was good in it, and it was VERY sad and rather depressing.

Which is kind of refreshing in today's can't have an unhappy ending, they don't test well movie world.

OK, I'm going to have to go with Selby for ONE reason. Only he could transform and become a foot shorter! A truly amazing accomplishment in my book.  :D

Yes, like "The Shining" (1980). I wouldn't call it pathetic, but they did leave out some key things from the Stephen King novel.

Gosh, I would rate "The Shining" as an all-time GREAT movie! I know Stephen King didn't like it, but I don't understand.  [wink2] It certainly scared the crap out of me and images from it have NEVER left me. I never remember a lengthy book as well. I admit I haven't read the book, but I did see the longer miniseries that King was so thrilled with and I didn't think much of it.

The safest literature to use as a movie is the novella, or a long short story. Then, all the elements CAN be included and everyone might end up happy if it is done well.

I believe they were well-suited to each other, and once he got over trying to replace Josette and accepted Vicki as a separate soul who loved him, they could have been very happy.

But I still think Willie might have been best of all!    ;)

Can't argue with you about Willie! But the whole problem with Vicky is that she DIDN'T love him..... :'(

Of all his love interests, Barnabas does seem to ironically have more chemistry with Angelique than any of the others (IMO).  They have quite a constant fire going on that I think if the series were going on today might occasionally turn more steamy regardless of their wanting to kill one another.

Still, my old memories of the show insist that I say Josette who I can't quite get out of my head as his "eternal love". It's just that when I think of it now -at  a crusty 47 vs. a much less jaded 12 - I can't help thinking "Eternal love? Just WHAT the heck IS that anyway!!!"  :P  Ahhhh, sweet, dingy youth where have you gone!

I have to agree with you on the chemistry thing with Angie. Personally, I think Barn and Josette have ZERO chemistry.

As for eternal love, I think it would have been much easier to keep a semblance of it (during one's lifetime anyway!) IF you were rich in the old days. He doesn't pick up his socks? Who cares, who does? That's the maid or valet's job! Plus, in the case of nobility they usually had separate bedrooms. Less of the familiarity breeds contempt concept. The men and women would only socialize for short periods of time and then part their ways. Which leads me to think the wife less likely to be stuck for hours watching him swill beer, watch tv and fart, all while in his underwear!

Sorry to digress, but some of us HAD gotten to talking about the movie not long ago. And, hey, no DS fix today or Monday anyway, so why not?

Saw it. IF I had been seeing it simply as a movie, I probably would have loved it. Since it was a movie from my favorite book of all time, I merely liked it. They did a LOT right. But the wrong part, was just painful.

Now, I admit it has been years and I don't remember all the details of the book. What I thought was melodramatic and made up at the end actually was toned down a little from the quick check I just made of the book. (Ok, they threw in a nose punch, but took out the tree falling on the car, which I don't think would have been very believable in a movie . And at least there were no car chases or guns involved!)

I pictured Ash as being older and LaMotte as being younger, but that is quibbling. That part of the movie was superb. What stuck in my craw was Aaron Eckhart as Roland. As if ANYONE could believe this guy as a subserviant academic! And how in the world could he ALWAYS have a 3 day beard growth? Too hunky, too macho, too stupidly adamant about avoiding relationships because he "hurt" someone deeply once. Accckkk, give me a break. I thought the lovely Gwyneth was perfect in the role, I may be prejudiced there, I ALWAYS like her.

Anyway, overall, can't help but have mixed feelings. There is no way a movie can capture the depth of the book, but they did do a good job of getting the essence of it. I just wish the part they screwed up hadn't been so integral to the credibility.

Having listened to his voice since I posted that, I am going to change my description from slightly raspy to nasal, in spite of the negative connotations that USUALLY has. I stand firm on the sex, sex, sex part though! [pimp]

Now comes the dumbing down of Maggie as she transforms into a Vicki clone.

I'm sorry, but it just isn't possible that Naggie could get ANY dumber than she was with Willie recently when he wanted to save her! To get as clueless as Vicky will be take an increase in IQ! [roll3]

I just checked IMDB. Paul Dooley was Gus Stemple #l from 92-93; John Karlen was Gus Stemple #2 from 93-96 while Carroll O'Connor was Gus Stemple #3 from 96 till end of series.

Ohh, that is too funny in more ways than one! I didn't watch much the first year, then watched faithfully for quite a while. I didn't realize that the actor I considered her dad, was a. a replacement for ANOTHER actor and b. John Karlen/Willie Loomis. I just remembered this nice, believable looking couple who weren't big Hollywood names playing her parents for years. When they dumped them because they COULD get big Hollywood names, I thought they had just gotten too  full of themselves and it soured me on the show which was slipping anyway at that point. Now that I realize that I got on my high horse for John Karlen, I feel quite justified!
