So I guess they're back to tracking DS daily, at least for now.  Boxoffice.com is reporting the Monday numbers:  $40,681, bringing the domestic total to $76,901,560.  That is down from last Monday but up from the Monday before.  Hopefully it will reach $77M before the end of the week, when who knows how many theaters it'll be in next week.  I'd love to see the film reach $80M but I think it'll be hard to attain at this rate.

Awesome video!  And since he did Sweeney Todd, we know that Johnny can sing, too.  I'd be up for Johnny as Frank!

Hi MB, I just came over here to report the numbers from BOM, and saw your post just before I was going to post.  So, apologies if we crosspost again!  Anyway, here are DS's weekend numbers.  The placings may change because perhaps all the numbers aren't in yet- the placings aren't listed by number after #16 on any of the 3 days:

Friday: $97,852 (22nd place)
Sat: $119,366 (23rd place- looks like The Intouchables snuck in over DS on this day)
Sun: $87,690 (22nd place)

According to Dread Central, which in turn cites blu-ray.com, DS will be out on DVD and blu-ray on October 2.  No details about extras, etc. yet.

Maybe it's just too hot this week to do them all  [ghost_wink]  I know that I only feel like doing half my work, too  [ghost_cheesy]  Oh well, patience, patience, and hopefully at some point we'll get some numbers!

Up to this point this year WB has been reporting the box office for all their films right up until their last day in theaters, so perhaps it's simply that the Wednesday holiday had something to do with the lack of reporting.

Are you sure that they actually post the box office daily, though?  Or do they just report all the numbers for the week at the end of the week?  I can't speak for WB per se, but that is how a lot of films are reported when they are late in the run.  I just remember having to exert a lot more patience to know the numbers after a film has been out for awhile, for other films.  As for Magic Mike and even Rock of Ages, they are more recent releases.  At any rate, I do hope we will soon know the full numbers.

I haven't come across those dual DVD/blu-ray discs, but I don't have that many blu-rays (or blu-ray/DVD combos) in my collection yet.  But man, I *hated* the dual-sided DVDs or dual DVD/CD discs that I have gotten from time to time in the past!  It's so hard to tell which side is which, and I think it's so much harder to damage them because both sides are so vulnerable.  So, I hope DS won't be one of those!  As for whether a combo package is needed, yeah MB, you're right in a way that you're just kind of getting an extra disc that you may not need.  But as I said, I got a few of those combos when I didn't have a blu-ray player yet, so I did need the DVD for the instant gratification of being able to watch it even before I bought a blu-ray player!  And I also figured that the extra would be good for my laptop, or for travel.  And in the cases when I sprung for it, there was always such a small price difference, like a buck or two, that it was almost like getting another disc nearly for free.  But I do agree that if there is a wider price difference and you don't need that extra disc, it's certainly a rip-off!  Now that I have the blu-ray player, I wouldn't buy a combo unless the price difference is very small and/or there are a *lot* more extras.

Well, a blu-ray disc generally won't play in a DVD player, so that's why I am assuming they will be separate discs.  I think a CD is compatible with a blu-ray player and I know it's compatible with most DVD players, so I guess I just thought it'd be an extra on one or both (edited to add- what I mean to say is that either the blu-ray or the DVD, or both, would "play" the soundtrack as if it was a CD).  We'll see!

I meant to say, too, that at some point late in any film's theatrical run, they stop tracking the box office daily, and only update at the end of the week or maybe at the end of the weekend in addition.  I didn't expect this to happen in the middle of the week, though!  But perhaps that is what has happened.  As you say, MB, we will probably get the weekly numbers at the end of this day.

At least DS is still at 303 theaters, which it was at a couple of weeks ago.

I think that probably the blu-ray and the DVD are the separate discs.  A couple of years ago, I started buying a few favorite films as a blu-ray/DVD combo even though I didn't have a blu-ray player yet, because the price difference was usually only a buck or two and I figured I'd get a blu-ray player at some point (I finally did get a blu-ray player about 6 months ago- just a cheap basic one).  Meanwhile, the DVD would be handy for my laptop, which as it turns out is often how I watch films.  For a time, both the blu-ray and the DVD had most of the same features, but as we've seen start to happen lately, the DVD disc started to have less and less features on it, which sort of puts pressure on everyone to spring for the blu-ray player.  I'm guessing that DS will be similar- that most of the extras will be on the blu-ray now and the DVD will just be the bare-bones movie :(  Still, if the US offers a blu-ray/DVD combo like this French one, and if the price is right, I'll probably go for it.

That's a big drop for Spiderman.  But it's not that uncommon for a blockbuster-type franchise film to drop its second day, simply because there is so much anticipation that a lot of the die-hard fans simply MUST see it on opening day.  Film buffs call this being "front-loaded".  But as you say, MB, it is kind of weird that it would make more on a Tuesday than on a holiday, especially in areas like mine where it's so darn hot out that one might think folks would be tempted to go see a movie in a nice air-conditioned theater to cool off  [ghost_wink]  But it's kind of weird for a film to open on a Tuesday, and also weird for there to be a major holiday on a Wed., and therefore the whole week will be weird for the box office.  I guess they were banking on a lot of folks having much of this whole week off (and certainly, a lot of high school and even college-age folks are off now, and this is the kind of film that will appeal to them no matter what day of the week it is!)  And also people might be more inclined to go see a film on a Tuesday night if they have Wed. off from work, whereas at least some people may have had bbq/fireworks plans on Wed. night.

I can't explain yesterday's numbers being lower, but regarding Tuesday's, I think I saw somewhere that Spiderman, which opened Tuesday, had the biggest Tues. box office ever.  That is bound to have taken away from most of the other films.

should we expect a release anytime soon?

In my travels I think I heard a late Sept. date (25th, maybe? Releases are usually on Tuesdays) and an early Oct. date (2nd or 9th, maybe?), though I don't know how credible either of those claims were.  Anytime near now does seem too soon, as it's still in theaters, so Sept.-Oct. does seem likely.  I'm "signed up to be notified" when DS is available for pre-order on Amazon, so I'll report back if I hear from them, though by that time there will probably have been a news report of the DVD release.  We'll see!

DS did quite well this past weekend, so adding theaters definitely helped!  It made $393,406, bringing the domestic total to $76,280,764.  Currently in 20th place on Box Office Mojo for the weekend, but I don't know if all the numbers are in yet.  Worldwide, the total is now $227,880,764.

What a great thread- hadn't seen it before!  Since a lot of time has passed since some of these posts, I may as well mention that all 3 seasons of Forever Knight have finally now been released!  It took awhile to get them out there, but I managed to get ahold of all of them.  Awesome series!  American Gothic is also out on DVD- I think I got the complete series as a bundle.  I remember when rewatching it that there is a lot of discrepancy with the episodes- they aired them out of order, I think, and it's a little difficult to figure out what order to watch them in, as there are a lot of plot inconsistencies if you watch them in the order they put them in.  That was a really excellent series, though I agree with those who said it sorta got lost a bit toward the end.

I suppose I'd regard Twilight Zone as my favorite series of all time, even though because of all the airings (often edited and shortened) by the Sci/Fi/SyFy channel, I've gotten a little burned out by it.  But there are just SO many classic episodes.  All the similar shows- Night Gallery, One Step Beyond, the Outer Limits, even Amazing Stories or Tales From The Crypt, are all ones I love to watch.  I also loved Twin Peaks when it was on, and I recently re-watched that whole series- again, it got a little goofy toward the end but wow, what a great show!

Among some horror/sci fi themed shows that have been on more recently, even though it's pretty far away from DS's genre, Battlestar Galactica was probably one of my top shows within the last decade, and I was also a fan of Firefly, Lost of course, and Heroes' first season-- even though it went downhill pretty fast, that first season still was pretty great.  There was also a show called The 4400, which is probably more like what Heroes should've been like.   This past year, I really enjoyed American Horror Story and look forward to season 2.  I watched Grimm a few times but I think it was on at the same time as another show, and I never really got into it.  Was the other show Fringe?  I adore Fringe and will be sorry to see it end after this coming season.  For some reason, I never got into True Blood or the Vampire Diaries- you'd think they'd be right up my alley!  Edited to add- believe it or not, I've never watched a single Buffy episode.  What an omission!  I have season 1 on my Netflix queue, and one of these years, I hope to plow through the entire series.
