Thanks for the recap.  Jonathan and the other cast members are real troupers!!  I'm glad they did get a little bit of private time, too.

Housefly, KLS and Laura gave some fun choices, and I'm glad to hear they seem excited.  Claude, I agree on Charlize- I hadn't thought of her but she would be a great Angelique!  She is very beautiful but she can be creepy, too.  She's also worked with Johnny before (The Astronaut's Wife) so that may be a plus.

Maybe a visit in Burbank from Johnny Depp would be appropriate? You think it could happen?? :o

Whoa, that would be awesome, wouldn't it??  8)  I would tend to doubt it'd be possible, because he's such a busy guy and is also a little public appearance-shy.  But you never know!

Thanks to everyone for their great reports and beautiful photographs!  I haven't attended a Fest since 1997 (yikes, that's 10 years!!  :o ) so it's wonderful to hear the reports.

Was there any mention of the recent film announcement, and if so, how is the reaction among the original cast members?  Do they feel positively about the prospect of a DS film?

Thanks!

Johnny Depp is now 44, which I think is about the same age Jonathan Frid was on DS  :)  Plus, the movie will probably come out a few years from now.  While he's certainly young and pretty in real life, he can look older- see The Ninth Gate for an example.  Sweeney Todd, too, from the few pix that have surfaced so far.  I think he'll be great as Barnabas!  Though I agree- he could also play Victoria with no problem  ;)

Crispin Glover has worked with Johnny Depp twice before (in What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Dead Man) so the choice might not be that outlandish.  I think he'd make a great Willie!

I would really love for Jonathan or David or any of the other original cast members to have small parts in the film; I hope they consider that idea!

I watch Lost, and agree that Josh Holloway would make a great Quentin.  But I've just seen Cillian Murphy in 2 films recently (in Sunshine, and i just rented Batman Begins), and I still think he'd be fantastic, too.  He is smaller than David Selby, but he has the same amazing piercing eyes!

For the Pirates sequels, I believe that Johnny got a base salary and then a percentage of the profits, and I think it added up to quite a lot!  However, this does not mean that he always gets a huge salary; just that he can command a lot if he wants to.  After the first Pirates movie, he was in a very low budget film called The Libertine that I think only had a total production budget of $10M.  It made very little at the box office, so I doubt he made much on that one, but it was a film he really wanted to do.  The budget of Sweeney Todd is rumored to be only $50M, and I doubt that his salary for this one is a full $20M (though I could be wrong), but I am guessing that he has a similar kind of deal where he'll get a percentage of any profits.  Dark Shadows will be a different case, too, because he will be a producer.  I would guess that again, he will take a base salary but also get a percentage as an actor and as a producer.  But I don't believe his asking alary is out of line at all- it's in step with other actors of his caliber.

As much as I love Tim Burton and his many collaborations with Johnny Depp (and I cannot wait for Sweeney Todd!!), for some reason he feels a little wrong for Dark Shadows.  I can't put my finger on why.  But I'm sure if he ends up being involved he'd do great.  I think del Toro is a great choice; Tarantino.. maybe not so much so (though I loved Kill Bill 1&2).

Thanks LdyAnne- I guess it was announced at Comic-Con and was just not given that as a reference right away.  At any rate, it's been announced!

Gothick, you're absolutely right that it may be a long time before this film comes out, and of course there are no guarantees that it even will.  First of all, it doesn't sound like there is even a script yet, and they will have to get that ball rolling.  Johnny himself has film commitments for at least the next year- he is next slated to film Shantaram from Jan to May of '08, and it was recently announced that the Hunter S. Thompson novel, The Rum Diary, will probably be next up after that.  There are some other tentative and rumored roles in the pipeline, as well, and his production company has a number of other projects going on besides Dark Shadows.

That said, I am really optimistic about this in the long run!  Johnny has long said that he was always a huge fan of the show, and if he is passionate about something, he will pursue it very relentlessly, even if it may take awhile.

I tried casting a few roles on a Depp forum I belong to, in part to introduce a few of the possible characters:

--Elizabeth Collins Stoddard- Helen Mirren
--Roger Collins- Tom Hollander (Cutler Beckett in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, but I like Kevin Spacey, too)
--Carolyn Stoddard- Hayden Panettiere (Heroes)
--Victoria Winters- Anne Hathaway
--David Collins- Freddy Highmore (Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland)  he might be too old, but he's worked well with Johnny before
--Amy Jennings- AnaSophia Robb (Violet Beauregard in Charlie & The Chocolate Factory) going on a theme here! Though she might be too old by the time the movie gets filmed, I like the idea of the old and new Violets playing this character
--Maggy Evans- Maggy Gyllenhaal
--Sam Evans- Kevin McNally (Mr. Gibbs in the Pirates films)
--Professor Stokes (drew a blank)
--Julia Hoffman- Glenn Close (a friend suggested this, and it was the best choice I thought of)
--Quentin- Cillian Murphy
--Willy Loomis- Jim Carrey (love the idea of Crispin Glover, though!)
--Angelique- Naomi Watts.
--Reverend Trask (drew a blank)

Nothing at all new in the text of this article:

(URL)

but I don't know - something about the way Depp looks in the accompanying photo makes me think he looks very Barnabas-like. Does anyone know what the photo is actually from?

Hi, I'm a new member!   :)  I was active in the AOL DS community during the 90's and am also a huge Johnny Depp fan.  Naturally, I'm thrilled about this news!!  The photo shown in the Variety article is just from a photoshoot, not from any of his movies.  It dates from March of 1997.  I agree he looks very Barnabas-like there!

The initial Variety ad made no mention of the San Diego Comic-Con, so I doubt that the announcement was made there.  A poster for Johnny's next movie, Sweeney Todd, was unveiled at the Comic-Con, so maybe the E! article confused the 2 news items.
