Mark, why not find another publisher for this book, like Tor, Lara's current publisher, or Pomegranate?

I've explored several other avenues, including Tor. There may be other options coming up -- not necessarily for this book, but equally enticing. :)

Thanks for putting this up, Mark. Can't wait to read it even though I'm still wallowing in DS literature I picked up at the fest.

I'm right there w/ya BJ, still reading RJ's book, then will read David Selby's.  But I did print up Mark's and am looking forward to reading it too.  ;)  Thanks Mark.

Thanks, Mark!  I printed it out the first time you gave it to us and, of course, I can't find where I had put it.  Now I've got it again!

NOTE: I discovered an error in the original PDF download file; a line of dialogue was inexplicably excised, evidently during the conversion process, as it appears correctly in the original MS Word file. At the top of page 22, the dialogue should read as follows:

Her laugh rang with falseness. "I took a walk alone, she said. "But even if I did see Barnabas, why do you ask as if it were against the law? There's no reason I shouldn't see him, is there?"

"I just want you to be honest with me, Carolyn. As you know, there are no secrets between Barnabas and myself. I would certainly never judge you for going to him. He can be very...persuasive...when he needs to be."

"I'm not sure I understand what you mean, Julia," Carolyn said, her jewel-like blue eyes turning icy. "I don't do anything I don't want to do or see anyone I don't want to see. You of all people should know that about me."

This error has been corrected in the currently downloadable PDF file. I hope that's the only significant error present.

I don't know if the error (now corrected) has got anything to do with this, but when I first opened your link, Mark, I got a message that said something like "this file is corrupted and cannot be repaired."  When I tried it a second time a few minutes later, it opened right up.

Ah, technical crap. Gotta love that...

Hopefully, it's trouble-free now. X-ing fingers.

Mark,

Read chapter one last night and am already sucked in!  I'm really liking it, you're a very talented writer, just the right amount of adjectives, not like someone ELSE we all know, chortle!   >:D

Anyway, am looking forward to really diving in to it over the weekend.  ;)

I too have now read the 1st chapter...  and am totally hooked...  I'd still be reading right now if I didn't have to pick up the kids from school.

Mark - you are a truly gifted writer!  I can't wait to sink my teeth into the rest of the story!

Thanks, y'all. Bear in mind, since this never went to an honest-to-god editor, it's first-draft quality, and it's entirely possible there may be a glitch or gaffe here and there; don't hesitate to point them out if you find 'em.  :)

Those of you who are interested in Mark's work should send him a message  off the Forum asking where you can find his short horror stories in anthology collections. The coming Halloween season is the perfect time of year to read them....... [_witch_]
