If DS Had Been Cast With Classic Horror Actors
« on: September 05, 2006, 09:58:05 AM »
In 1991, we saw Barbara Steele, a classic horror star, play Julia & Natalie.
Which roles could the following horror stars have played on the original DS?
Next to each name I put my own suggestions.
What are yours?

Boris Karloff (Dr. Eric Lang, Nicholas Blair, Joshua Collins, PT1970 Stokes)

Bela Lugosi (Sandor, Nicholas Blair, Evan Hanley, PT1970 Stokes)

Evelyn Ankers (Victoria, Roxanne,  Beth, Daphne or any KL SCott role)

Peter Cushing (Dr. Dave Woodard, old Daniel Collins, Ezra Braithwaite)

Peter Lorre (Willie, Ben Stokes)

David Manners (Joe Haskell, Jeremiah, Philip Todd, Sky Rumsom)

Edward Van Sloan (T. Eliot Stokes, Roger, Joshua, Edward)

Elena Verdugo (Pansy Faye, Letitia, Jenny, Daphne)

Christopher Lee (Barnabas, Bramwell, Roger, Edward, Joshua, Nicholas Blair, Evan Hanley, Gerard)

Lon Chaney Jr (any incarnation of Stokes)

Vincent Price (any Louis Edmonds role, Dr. Eric Lang, Ezra Braithwaite)

Ingrid Pitt (Angelique, Pansy, Letitia, Samantha)

Gloria Stuart, 1930s (any KL Scott, Nancy Barrett, or Lara Parker role, or Daphne, Samantha)

Gloria Stuart, Titanic era (Bathia Mapes, old Edith)

Fay Wray (any Nancy Barrett role, because they both scream so well!!!)

why not lon chaney jr as chris jennings? although he would been a lil old for carolyn or sabrina. bela could have been barnabas but they would have to explain the hungarian accent. boris karloff as dr.lang for sure or a younger boris as adam. i would add dwight frye as willie. maybe peter lorre as aristede.

Perhaps a cousin from Transylvania?  ;)

How about Agnes Moorehead as Julia Hoffman: another Oscar-nominated redhead who could dominate any scene she was in!  Colin Clive or Basil Rathbone as Barnabas, Una O' Connor as Mrs. Johnson, Claude Rains as Prof. Stokes, Elisha Cook, Jr., as Willie, Simone Simon as Angelique, George Sanders as Roger (who else, besides, Art Wallace partly based the character of Roger on the roles Mr. Sanders played!), Maria Ouspenskaya as Magda, and Ethel Barrymore (did she ever do horror?) as Elizabeth.

I completely agree - a 40 (even 50)-something Agnes Moorehead would have done a very respectable Julia.

I can't quite see her as Elizabeth myself - but maybe that's just me.  The few times I saw her in films she was probably older and more matronly than I picture Elizabeth.  She did do at least a couple of films that I think would pass as horror/fantasy though...

The Spiral Staircase (1946) with Dorothy McGuire and George Brent
Portrait of Jennie (1948) with Joseph Cotton and Jennifer Jones

Speaking of Joseph Cotton - he may have been a fairly good Roger.  He seemed to have a pretty good horror flick portfolio and was very good as Olivia de Havilland's partner in crime in one of my favorite movies, Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte.  Actually Olivia might make a good Elizabeth herself.  As off the wall as Jennifer Jones was, she would have had to fit into some DS role well too.

I think Vampira might be better in the 3 Marie Wallace roles?

Well, I suppose if they made it into a cartoon.  ;)

In that vein, how 'bout Elvira in the role of Eve.  'Course, this would be if DS was turned into a comedy, LOL! ;)

Here's my take on an "All Hammer" Dark Shadows....

"Curse of Dark Shadows" (1966) Dir. Terence Fisher. The Collins family, a wealthy but reclusive clan, living on the remote shore of Cornwall, are unexpectedly visited by a mysterious cousin,  Barnabas (Christopher Lee), and the village is beset by a mysterious series of deaths, with victims all drained..of blood. Impressive make-up by Phil Leakey, with a lush score by James Bernard

Other Cast

Elizabeth Stoddard...Joan Fontaine
Dr. David Woodard...Peter Cushing
Dr. Julia Hoffman...Barbara Shelley
Prof. Timothy Stokes...Herbert Lom
Roger Collins...Michael Gough
Maggie Evans...Yvonne Romaine
David Collins...Martin Stephens
Victoria Winters...Heather Sears
Carolyn Stoddard...Veronica Carlson
Chris Jennings...Oliver Reed
Joseph Haskell...Edward DeSouza
William Loomis...Michael Ripper
Sherrif Patterson...Peter Woodthorpe
Daphne...Martine Beswick
Mrs. Johnson...Freda Jackson
Cemetery Caretaker...Patrick Troughton

Screenplay by Tudor Gates from a short story by Dan Curtis

Distributed in the US by Warner 7 Arts

Michael  ;)
Your Cousin from Virginia

"I have the deed to Carfax Abbey..."

"Scare unto others as you would have them scare unto you.".. Super Ghoul

GREAT idea!
though I might change the Mrs. Johnson casting to Catherine Finn, real life Mrs.Michael Ripper, who played Mrs. Hargrove, the lady with the bee stung face in The Deadly Bees (1966)

Also add:
Ingrid Pitt as Ruby Tate
Suzanna Leigh as Suki Forbes

She could be Amanda Harris because that part of the show was definitely a joke.  >:D

Michael Ripper would've made a great Sherrif Patterson, too.
