a few things to do in brooklyn
« on: August 24, 2006, 12:40:55 AM »
for those attending the brooklyn fest this weekend there are a few other fun things to do very close to the fest site should one want to get out for a bit.

the brooklyn museum and the brooklyn botanic garden are a scant ten minute subway trip away.
the museum is excellent and has a world class egyptian collection("oh great god rah")and the garden is beautiful and relaxing as well.

both are located just six subway stops away on the 2 train right across the street from the marriott at the borough hall station.get off at the eastern parkway station.

one needn't rely on the hotel restaurant either.just a few blocks away on atlantic avenue there is a great and inexpensive fish and chips place called chip shop.besides fish and chips they serve authentic british dishes(mushy peas, scotch eggs, fried mars bars)and pub beers.

the hotel congierge probably has any additional info needed.

hope to meet many of you there!

p.s. i'm so spoiled this year i can actually walk there from my house.
sleep 'til noon and your punishment shall be the dregs of the coffeepot.

Of course, walking over both the Brooklyn Bridge & the Williamsburg Bridge are awesome.

In the Willimsburg neighborhood, you enter a world where time has stood still.
The Chassidic Jews in Williamsburg live, dress & speak as their ancestors did in Eastern Europe.

You can take a walk around historic Brooklyn Heights, stopping into one of the fine restaraunts around there, which is also a wonderful thing to do.
And don't forget the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, with it's breathtaking views of the river & downtown Manhattan.

Go to the Atlantic Ave train station, and take the B train to 20th Ave in Brooklyn & see the block where Travolta did his "paint can strut" in Saturday Night Fever.
It's right where you get off the train.

Walk over to 16th Ave & 80th St & you'll see New Utrecht High School, from where I graduated in 1973, and which was seen in the opening credits of Welcome Back Kotter.

Get back on the B train, and go to Coney Island, have a hot dog at Nathan;s, and ride the Cyclone, the oldest operating roller coaster in America.

Brooklyn rocks!

David, how could you talk about Brooklyn and not mention Junior's Cheesecake?  I'm from across the Narrows, and when I think of Brooklyn, the that wonderful dessert comes to mind!  Pity there isn't a Quiznos near the hotel......

Thanks for the tips. especially the fish and chips. I hope I'll finally learn how to pronounce your name! Has there been any mention of how/when/where people from this forum can hook up?

Most fans seem to congregate in a common area, lobby etc...and will still have their name badges on so they're easy to spot. ;D

I will make sure to add "CyrusL" on my name badge below my given name, Michael. I hope to meet all my old convention pals, and many of your on this board for the first time as well! This is # 9 for me, although I still feel a bit like a "newbie" when I compare myself to Charles Ellis!  [9391] I may also be a part time volunteer this year as well...

I don't know what her schedule is (I guess one can go to www.cunard.com to see), but if the Queen Mary 2 is docked, take a look at her.  Well, from a distance, since security won't allow you too close.  But even from a distance, she is impressive.  I was fortunate to spend a month aboard her in 2004, her maiden season.  She now docks at a Brooklyn pier designed just for her; her previous dock in the Chelsea area in Manhattan proved too small.

Thanks, MSC.  As a vegetarian, I am afraid fish and chips do not really... cut the mustard?

Best, Steve

Indian Restaraunts

Though I can't think of any specific locations, I do recall that there are Indian restaraunts along Henry Street in nearby Brooklyn Heights, which is a five minute walk from the hotel,  and along 7th Ave in Brooklyn's Park Slope area, not far from the hotel.

Gothick, when you get to the hotel, just ask the conceirge, he or she should know of any Indian joints in the area.

Groovy!  Thanks for all the help!

For some reason I thought that hotel was in Park Slope and that Bklyn Heights was a major schlep away.  And I've actually been to Bklyn a few times--last time was about 5 years ago, I guess.
