What a lovely night for the unquiet dead.

I've only seen this movie a few times on TV. It's an old B&W comedy/horror movie in which a brother and a sister move into a haunted New England? mansion after spotting the house for sale (I believe their dog ran up to the house, a little black scottie I think). Anyhow there's something to do with a woman who lived and died in the house, and her daughter who lives down the road with her sea captain grandfather. The brother takes a shine to the girl and the grandfather forbids her to go near the house. I do remember one scene where the daughter takers the brother out for a boat ride (I believe he is a writer) and he gets seasick.

I can't for the life of me remember this movie's name. I was hoping a few of the other horror buffs out there might remember it. I wouldn't call it straight out horror because it does have some comedic elements to it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That would be The Uninvited (1944) Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey. A good picture.

I have never heard of this movie, yet I would like to add my voice to the chorus of people who know about this movie, for no good reason.

Two thunbs up for this movie, if you are instrested in buying this movie I think if you look up Ray Malland or Ruth Hussey and click bio page with the list of movies you may be able to purchas this at a low cost.

The "holy trinity" of ghost films: THE UNINVITED('44), THE INNOCENTS('61), THE HAUNTING('63)  :)

I haven't seen the Innocents, but I agree with you on the other two. The Haunting is one of the best ghost movies EVER MADE. Too bad the remake sucked so horribly.

I''m not a fan of re-makes.  Off the top of my head I can't think of a single case where I thought the re-make was equal to, much less better than, the original.

Having said that.....the one good thing that sometimes comes of re-makes is re-newed interest in the original.

SO true!  The one w/Liam Neeson was a piece of crap and I laughed all the way through it, NOT scary at all.  Now, the original w/Juile Harris??!  Whoa!  Scared me so bad that any thoughts of spending the night at Seaview Terrace have completely left me.  NO WAY will I spend the night there, EVER!   [nerv]

I agree w/this as well.  I absolutely refused to see the re-make of Yours, Mine & Ours and will not see Poseidon.  I'll watch the originals instead thank you very much.  The ONLY reason so many re-makes are being made these days, IMHO, is no one in Hollyweird has any original thoughts.  They have to go back to the classics to make a buck.  Very sad.  I DO think, like Raineypark, that the one good thing about re-makes is it makes ppl interested in the original and in most cases, like in the case of The Haunting, will cause said originals to come out on DVD.  At least I don't *think* The Haunting was on DVD until very recently (like last year).

I'm surprised no one mentioned how much of several DS plots come from this film.

On another note, I'm not opposed to remakes. People always forget how many of the classics we think should never have been remade were remakes themselves. Even back in Golden Age Hollywood, they were doing this. Proud old Hollywood tradition really.

Cecil B. DeMille's remake of his own THE 10 COMMANDMENTS comes to mind -

Peter Jackson's KING KONG was good too -

But on the other hand, I just saw the new version of THE OMEN the other day and it was a worthless piece of garbage :P
