New Salem’s Lot Movie Adaptation to Skip Theaters, Premiere on Max

I loved the novel but I can't say I was the biggest fan of the 1979 TV version. I've never seen the 2004 TV version.

I remember watching the 2004 Rob Lowe cable version, but to be perfectly honest, I don't remember a thing about it, so I guess it didn't leave a very indelible impression upon me.

This Long-Awaited Stephen King Vampire Movie Is Finally Coming to Max
It'll arrive just in time for Halloween.

I have my druthers about this version because it repeats the main thing I hated about the 1979 version - but I'm keeping an open mind...

Salem's Lot Is Yet to Have a Good Adaptation, Let's Hope Max Changes That
How do the previous Salem's Lot adaptations compare to the original novel by Stephen King?

I would say that's probably not going to be the case because I've read several different articles that say word of mouth from those who have already seen it is not good.

The Barlow of the 1979 miniseries, however, seems to be based more upon the version of vampires you see in Nosferatu

THAT was the main reason I really disliked the 1979 version - Barlow looked human in the novel. And apparently he looks human in the 2004 version, which I have not seen. Why they felt the need to go the Nosferatu route again for this new adaptation is anyone's guess...

The original TV miniseries with David Soul, Lance Kerwin, James Mason, and Bonnie Bedelia had a major impact on me, though not when it aired in 1979. Unfortunately I was unaware of it at that time, at a college where no one watched TV. I first saw it maybe in the late 1990s when I first got cable and DS was airing on the Sci-Fi channel. Those were the days . . . I agree with MB that the biggest drawback was the portrayal of the vampire as a Nosferatu type creature - why depart from the original concept of the novel? (Though I have to admit, I only started the novel once, set it aside, and never got back to it.) The Rob Lowe version had some plusses, some minuses, and was less memorable for me - I can't recall at all how the vampire was even portrayed, and I didn't care much for the kid who played the boy. Thanks for linking to the clip of the new version. I think I'll just stick with the oldie.

Well, it didn't get good reviews, so I'm really no longer disappointed at not seeing it since it skipped the theaters (it's original goal) and went to streaming (something I don't have).

When a movie gets shelved from its originally planned release and then shows up years later direct-to-video, or nowadays, streaming, it's not normally a sign that the film is good. There probably are exceptions - but they're few and far between...

It's just too bad because you feel bad for the cast because chances on they tried to do the best that they could with what they were given.
