WORTH WATCHING

The wicked Leland Townsend (Michael Emerson) can’t say he wasn’t warned. And Kristen (Katja Herbers) wasn’t kidding earlier this season when she said, “Did you ever wonder why The Omen skipped the infancy? Because that’s the real horror.” Now that the infant whom Leland insists is the anti-Christ has been born (using one of Kristen’s eggs), the babe is bedeviling him with all manner of bodily fluids, and he turns to an unusual source for help. Elsewhere in a typically wild episode, the team encounters a supernatural force that’s literally eating their words, Sister Andrea (Andrea Martin) takes giant shears to fight a demon that’s become attached to Father Ignatius (Wallace Shawn), and Leland targets Kristen’s husband Andy (Patrick Brammall) with a truly diabolical scheme.

WORTH WATCHING: ..., ‘Evil’ Takes Flight, ...

"The paranormal investigators of Evil take a perilous trip to Rome and Vatican City to return a mysterious relic."

Evil
Parmount+
Blending terror and laughter as few have been able to accomplish, this terrific series (now in its final season) takes a detour to Rome and the holy Vatican City with priest David (Mike Colter) and his non-believing colleagues Kristen (Katja Herbers) and Ben (Aasif Mandvi). They’re escorting an ancient relic that may contain a piece of Jesus Christ’s cross, and no surprise, the passage isn’t without incident. Back home, Kristen’s raucous quartet of daughters is momentarily subdued by their dad’s mental health setback, but that soon changes when they’re left alone on a dark and stormy night.

The 8 best horror series of all time
Lost voyages, haunted houses and the best scares in television history

Evil’ (2019-2024)

The best horror series are mostly streaming-era phenomena, with long production timelines and complex layered narratives that play out across multiple seasons. That is part of what makes “Evil” so refreshing. Its network-style, case-of-the-week structure is a throwback to an earlier era of television without sacrificing modern quality or ingenuity. Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) is hired by the Catholic Church to investigate paranormal events like possessions, where she works alongside seminarian David Acosta (Mike Colter) and tech wizard Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi).

Like “The X-Files,” the series draws energy and drama out of the sexual and scientific tension between the true believer David and the skeptical Kristen, as they gradually unravel a global network of demonic evil that threatens an apocalypse. A “rare show that operates with style and intelligence on every level,” across its four seasons it achieves a “level of profundity, even genuine intellectual insight, that most shows don’t even try for,” said Phillip Maciak at The New Republic.
