Was it the right call to turn The Addams Family into a boilerplate Netflix show about a girl at a supernatural school investigating a not-very-intriguing murder mystery and navigating some not-very-original high school drama? Probably not. This show didn't have to be a Chilling Adventures of Sabrina redux. But Jenna Ortega's winningly droll performance as the iconic morbid teen Wednesday Addams and director/executive producer Tim Burton's distinctive brand of macabre whimsy make it entertaining enough to watch if you're not expecting something spectacular. -Liam Mathews
