TVLine Items: ... First Lady, ...

"The First Lady‘s remarkable cast just keeps getting better: American Horror Story vet Lily Rabe has joined the cast of Showtime’s upcoming scripted anthology, TVLine has learned.

The political drama from writer/creator Aaron Cooley will chronicle the lives of a number of First Ladies throughout American history, with the first season focusing on Michelle Obama, Betty Ford and Eleanor Roosevelt. Rabe will play Lorena “Hick” Hickock, a pioneering journalist who by 1932 became America’s best-known female reporter and was a devoted friend and mentor to Eleanor Roosevelt.

Rabe joins a cast that already includes Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder) as Michelle Obama, Michelle Pfeiffer (The Wizard of Lies) as Betty Ford and Gillian Anderson (The Crown) as Eleanor Roosevelt. In addition to American Horror Story, Rabe’s TV credits include The Undoing, Tell Me Your Secrets and The Whispers."

The First Lady Is an Egregiously Miscast, Emptily Inspirational Missed Opportunity

"Pfeiffer’s Betty Ford is the only lead performance that feels like more than an impression. A masterly portrayer of women with demons who’s in the midst of a marvelous second act, she gives us a strong, principled yet serially wounded First Lady who spends decades trying to regain the sense of purpose she felt as a young dancer. All of her struggles, from breast cancer to addiction, are rooted in a body that habitually betrays her conscious will. The character lends itself to melodrama. But Pfeiffer tempers Betty’s extreme highs and lows with intelligence, humor, and empathy. These choices give her segments a sense of purpose that the others lack."

Roush Review: ‘The First Lady’ Spotlights 3 Women Who Broke the Mold

- though it definitely agrees in this case:

"Michelle Pfeiffer is riveting and endearing as the irreverent Betty, the life of the party who by going public with her private pain, battling breast cancer and addiction, became a national role model."

WORTH WATCHING: Star Power in ‘The First Lady,’ ...

"Three great actresses—Gillian Anderson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Viola Davis—portray iconic first ladies in Showtime’s anthology drama The First Lady."

The First Lady
SERIES PREMIERE
Showtime
9/8c
SUNDAY: No one’s going to put these dynamic first ladies in an East Wing corner. Three remarkable actresses—Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt, Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford, Viola Davis as Michelle Obama—portray three of American history’s more outspoken presidents’ wives, each refusing to be pigeonholed into traditional roles. The series somewhat awkwardly shifts among the decades in reflecting their personal and political lives, but it’s still one of the more captivating historical spectacles since The Crown. As their mates, Kiefer Sutherland is FDR, Aaron Eckhart is Gerald Ford and The Handmaid’s Tale’s O-T Fagbenle impresses as Barack Obama.
