Dark Shadows, Bobby Sherman, Michael Cole - 16 Spec Magazine 1970

When I saw the cover and the date of the issue, I thought there was a small piece about hoDS in it, though it was simply DS at the time...

Who remembers Here Come the Brides?  Bobby Sherman's hair must've been half the budget.

The bluest skies you've ever seen are in Seattle.
And the hills the greenest green in Seattle.
Like a beautiful child,
growing up, free and wild...

I not only remember the show - I own both seasons on DVD.

The worse thing ABC did was move the show to Fridays. It did so well in the ratings when it was on Wednesdays...

MB, I'm impressed!  I didn't even know it was released on DVD.

Ironically, I watched it more when it was on Friday.

Ironically, it was Perry Como who had the hit single version of Seattle, not Bobby.  [8_1_209] [8_1_209] [8_1_209]

Uncle Roger, I had no idea Perry Como (one of the few men, along with Lawrence Welk, my good Catholic mother could lust after without having to go to confession), sang the theme.  I knew Bobby didn't do it (he sang that awful Easy Come, Easy Go, a one-hit-wonder and then vanished.  Whatever happened to him?  I'm too lazy to wiki him.

ABC gave him a second series, Getting Together, where he played a songwriter who would occasionally write for The Partridge Family. The show was not successful and was quickly canceled.
As show business opportunities became fewer, Sherman found a new career as a paramedic. He later joined the Los Angeles police department and was eventually promoted to Captain and later Commander. I believe that he is still with the police department.
Sherman would still perform music occasionally through the 1990's. I don't think that he does that anymore.
Oh, and his first wife Patti divorced him to marry his Here Come The Brides costar David Soul.

Bobby Sherman had a few top 40 hits in the 1969-71 period. A friend loaned me a videotape of Bobby about 20 years ago appearing on Rosie O'Donnell's talk show in the late 1990s. She made a big deal out of how he had been her big crush as a tween. He seemed healthy and happy.

According to a popular internet search engine, among Bobby's other hits were "Little Woman," "Julie Do Ya Love Me," and "Cried Like a Baby."

It sounds like his life should be a Lifetime movie.  Just so long as Hallmark doesn't make it.

Two things that probably should be clarified:

According to Wikipedia, Bobby Sherman did record Seattle (though he changed some of the lyrics) and while it did get some radio airplay, it was never released as a single.

And while Perry Como had the hit single, he didn't sing Seattle on the show. On the show the theme was sung by The New Establishment.

What an awful name for a band--"The New Establishment." Wasn't the old Establishment bad enough?

I thought Seattle was a nice, upbeat song. I think I may have seen one episode of Here come the brides but it did nothing for me. Robert Brown (who also appeared in a strange Star Trek story that I seem to recall involved Parallel Time) was the male lead on the show. Bobby had a supporting role. Joan Blondell who was always great fun was in it, along with Mark Lenard and others--I'd completely forgotten David Soul was in the cast.

I forgot, too, Gothic that David Soul was in the show.  I only remember him from Starsky and Hutch and then his momentary singling career.  Then he got a reboot from starring in the mini-series Salem's Lot.  I have no recollection of him afterward.

I met Bridget Hanley, who played Candy Pruitt, Bobby's love interest and Robert Brown, who played the oldest brother Jason Bolt, at an autograph show in California about 10 years ago. They were both very friendly and chatty. They had both aged quite well, though Robert's hair and beard were completely white.

That's great that you met Bridget Hanley and Robert Brown. I always thought Brown was sexy in a kind of rugged way, and I thought Bridget looked so wholesome and genuine. I remember reading back in the teen mags day that Bridget married a producer and presumably retired after Brides went off the air.

Hanley had more of a career than I realized, post Brides. Lots of theatre in both California and New York. She was also a regular on the Barbara Eden tv series Harper Valley PTA. One of her most interesting roles was on the NBC horror anthology Circle of Fear. She played one of a group of catty office workers who just happened to be devil worshippers. She told me that she was making Christmas wreaths in her dressing room between takes.
As for Robert Brown, he did a pretty good job playing opposite Vincent Price in Roger Corman's Tower of London. It's basically Richard III without the Shakespeare.
I do recall 16 Magazine describing Robert for readers who prefer to separate the men from the boys. How very true.😉😉😉
